How to Make a Sidecar | Cocktail Recipes
Recipe: 2 oz cognac; 1 oz Cointreau; Â_ oz lemon juice. Shake and strain into a Â_ sugar-rimmed glass. Garnish with orange twist.
The Sidecar is a classic cocktail that a lot of people have heard of, but few people actually know how to make, or have even tasted when made properly. The cocktail was invented in the 1920's in France. You'll notice that a lot of classic cocktails start to be invented in Europe in the 1920's.
That's because of a little thing called prohibition, which was started in 1919 in the United States, so all of the American bartenders, the ones basically who didn't go and work in underground speakeasy's or went to find another profession, they would go over to Europe and started creating drinks over there.
So the Sidecar is made with cognac, which is a French brandy made in the Cognac region of France and Cointreau which is french orange liqueur. It's a sour style cocktail and I love this drink, because I think it's still a really dignified, elegant drink, but it isn't as stiff as a Manhattan or Martini, so if you're looking for an alternative to that. But anyway, let's make a Sidecar.
We're going to start with 2 oz. of cognac. So like I said it's a French brandy. Brandy is just distilled fruit, in this case distilled wine and we know France is known for it's great wines. We're going to do a whole ounce of Cointreau. Cointreau is a orange liqueur and it's really high quality. There are other liqueur, orange liqueurs out there, they're triple secs and stuff.
Some of them will work okay in a Sidecar, but I really swear by Cointreau. I just think it's the highest quality out there. One whole ounce and this is sweet, so this is going to be your sweetener. There's no simple syrup in this drink, even though it's a sour style drink. I have to a juice a little more lemon. I've got that strainer setup there, that fine strainer.
This is one of the drinks that I really like to have the pulps strained out. I think that nice texture justifies that extra step of straining out the lemon juice, but to each his own. So now we're going to do three-quarters of an ounce of lemon juice. I mentioned that Cointreau is your sweetener and there no simple. This is a tart drink, and so if you want it to be a little sweeter it's okay to add just a little simple syrup, just a dash. But I like it made this way and is the classic recipe, by the way.
All right, so we're going to shake this drink, because it's got lemon juice in it, which is a non-alcoholic ingredient. We do really need to force those ingredients together, so now we're ready to shake. First though, I'm going to prep our glass. Like I said it's a tart drink, so if you haven't added some simple syrup and are doing it the classic way, we're going to rim the glass with sugar and I'm going to show you how to do that.
So we have our glass chilling in the freezer, always a great idea for any cocktail. They'll keep it cold. We're going to set that and now we're going to shake. I'm going to be alone with my shaker for a moment, excuse me. It's hard to look cool shaking, but it is the closest you'll ever get to see me dance, which I look less cool doing. Okay, so I'm not even going to give this a second.
This was chilling in the freezer. After we take it out, we let it sit for a minute. As the glass warms up, the condensation will start to form on the rim, and you don't need to use any citrus or anything. You'll notice that it'll just stick right on there. See that? You don't have the mess from putting maybe a lemon on there to get it to stick or sometimes people use simple syrup which works, but this is a lot cleaner, a lot easier and it's a lot more even.
So this will take the edge off of that tartness from the Cointreau. And just like I strained the lemon juice, I'm also going to fine strain all the little ice bits, because I think that this is again, just such a delicate drink. Every little step you can take to make it even more delicate, I say do it.
Finally, we'll add our garnish, which is a twist of orange. We're just going to express the oils on to the drink, to get those really nice, ripe aromatics from the orange peel. Hold the white part to you, the pith, and hold it kind of sideways like this and gently just squeeze out those oils over the top. Give it a nice little twist and there you have it. That is how you make the famous Sidecar.

I heard that during prohibition the moonshine that was discretely produced out in the sticks, tasted so bad that it had to be mixed with sugar and fruit juices, hence the birth of the cocktails. Didn’t know that american bartenders went to Europe to create cocktails there. That’s definitely news to me.

Dilution and temperature occur on a logarithmic curve, so eventually both will bottom out. Once he shakes the drink, it will be at a temperature less than 32 degrees fahrenheit (because alcohol has a lower freezing point than water, the drink won't be frozen), but the ice will stop melting AND no longer be cooling the drink at that point. :) So while it might be more diluted than ideal (which really is a matter or preference), it won't be a watery drink by any means.

You really nailed it. A sidecar should not taste sweet IMHO. Remy Martin is great, the VSOP is superb and the Accord Royal is even better and only sightly more expensive. As with all cocktails, more expensive and therefore often more aged spirits won't lift the cocktail but instead they are just too weak to compete against the rest. Both R.M. VSOP and Cointreau are available in almost every super market here in Switzerland, and not very expensive due to our proximity to France. I don't do sugar rims.

Would you think Hennessy is a good choice for cognac?
@ottmatt1
@ottmatt1 7 лет назад
Well done! I have to say though , when I make these for my friends , I lay them into a large red wine glass, a bit more room for a chunk or two of fresh orange/lemon/lime.......+ 27 points for telling the truth about the Cointreau, when you aspire to make one of the tastiest cocktails in recent history, go all in and get the good stuff. And yes, the higher quality of brandy/cognac you use, the more sublime and devastating this uber-cocktail becomes...Use this wisely, consuming these ingredients rapidly may result in something unexpected...unfortunately, this is rather to easy to sip, and then you're drinking it, and then you shoot some as a toast, and then you may find yourself in some unknown space...I know I did...

because it has brandy in it, it would just not work well. you are bringing the same flavor profile with both which would make a pretty flat cocktail. i prefer combier over cointreau

@@philipgwyn8091 heaven forbid someone wasting a whole ounce of the precious gran marnier. @jose just try it out. you will probably like it if you like side cars and gran marnier. don't listen to the other expert posters. gran marnier can be used in any cocktail that calls for an orange liqueur and i assure you it will be drinkable. in my opinion gran marnier makes for an excellent side car but usually i use the cointreau. sure as hell wouldn't not make one because i only had gran marnier.

@Cocktailnyymi
@Cocktailnyymi 8 лет назад
+Cenobite3 Start with a younger VS first and then switch to a VSOP. VS's are a tad more robust in flavor (since they're younger) but the price notch almost doubles when going to VSOP. If you're not a brandy fanatic, basically any of the big house's brandy will do (Hennessy, Remy, Meukow, Courvoisier) and after that it is just up to personal preference (and the outlooks of the bottle of course :D)

So if it has no alcohol you shake and if it does have alcohol you stir?
@ringinreturn1
@ringinreturn1 6 лет назад
if it is all alcohol you stir, if there is juice or other ingredients in it that don't mingle as well you shake. something like a negroni with gin, campari, sweet vermouth you would stir, while a margarita/cosmo/ect you would shake. this is not really the "end all" however. the push of new wave, millennials has shifted things quite a bit. i work as a bartender at a fine dining restaurant in downtown columbus and many people prefer to have some classics shaken. i make way more vodka/gin martinis shaken than i do stirred. it does bring me some pain though when i shake a gin martini... it bruises it and it just isn't nearly as clean.
@psilocybemusashi
@psilocybemusashi 3 года назад
if you put all clear items people say you should stir. if you put anything cloudy in it like lemon juice then saking is just fine. you can do either way. the biggest difference will be the presentation.

Oh my god, how many mistakes in this cocktail!!!!!! First of all, as someone else wrote, you should put the ingredients in the shaker once you're ready to shake and pour. Cognac is 5 cl, it means less than 1 and 3/4 oz, cointreau is just 2 cl, less than 3/4 oz, and the same for lemon juice, 2 cl (according to IBA official recipe). That's why you filled the glass, and, by the way, NEVER fill the glass, but always leave a finger! And the sugar-rimmed glass sounds new to me.
@ringinreturn1
@ringinreturn1 6 лет назад
leaving a finger is meant for martini glasses only, for most cases. coup glasses you want filled right to the brim. where it comes to in a glass is dependent on the size of the glass. coup glasses hold less ounces of liquid than martini glasses do. that is pretty basic. bartending 101.
