Docs Minnow Balsa Crankbait Template available at makewoodenlures.com/making-ba...
Balsa crankbaits are awesome to make and great fun to fish with. In this beginners tutorial I show you how to make a very simple balsa wood lure using minimal tools and equipment. This is a beginners lure that most people could start and finish this weekend - but it's a deadly fish catcher nonetheless!
This video is the first of a series aimed at encouraging beginners into lure making. Over the next few videos we'll work our way through a few different patterns of handmade wooden lures, keeping it super simple. All of the balsa lures we'll make use the same basic kit of tools and materials.
Balsa crankbaits are an ideal starting point for newbies to wooden lure making. As a raw material, this timber works easily, is easy to get your hands on and has a nice, crisp action that's deadly on a lot of species.
The tools you'll need for handmade balsa crankbaits are very simple…… In fact, you probably own everything you need already! A handsaw, knife or chisel, pliers and battery drill make up the basic kit. Balsa wood, epoxy, sandpaper, small ball sinkers, wire, hooks and rings make up the materials.
And of course, you'll be wanting some paint to pimp your handmade lures up!
The process for making homemade balsa crankbaits is fairly straightforward. Start by downloading the template from my website, printing it and cutting it out. Then use the template to lay out the side profile. Cut the blanks, square them, drill for twist eyes and weights, cut the top profile, sand, harden and paint!
Of course, Doc's Minnow is just a starting point and you'll find that making balsa crankbaits (and other balsa lures) quickly becomes addictive. Once you've made this little lure a couple of times you'll probably find yourself making balsa crankbait designs, or branching into other styles of balsa lures….. like the other projects in this series!

I've wanted to try making a lure for a while but most of the videos online have so many tools I don't have. Kinda surprising what you can do with so little. Maybe I'll pick up some balsa from the craft store.

Nice video man, just buying myself a few bits to hopefully make some of my own lures, started with balsa wood for ease. Is it necessary to seal the wood once the bait is finished, before painting that is? thanks

What's the point if being acurate with a bradpoint bit if you marked the center line by eye without measuring tools?

thanks again Greg, do you recommend any other wood other than balsa? I have had some success with pine and cedar. any thoughts there?

Great video I’m keen to give this ago great for beginners and kids like me. Where can you get the marine grade wire for the attachment spots to put into the lure? A special place or would Bunnings have? Thanks heaps

I personally use stainless steel TIG wire. Available in a variety of diameters at welding/steel suppliers. Dirt cheap too

How big and heavy fish will the twist eyes hold on a balsa lure of that size manage that i epoxy with several layers before it breaks?
@Makelures
@Makelures 6 лет назад
Jakelol1980 Great question, thanks for asking! I’ve hung 20kg weights from a similar sized balsa lure with twist eyes and they held that weight overnight. Some balsa is softer than others and not all epoxies are equal, but generally speaking the force required to pull twist eyes is way more than the breaking strain of any line you’d use with a lure of this size.
@Jakelol1980
@Jakelol1980 6 лет назад
Sounds like well enough for perch and smaller pikes up to 5kg then? I was thinking if i should go with twisted eyes instead of through wire and save me alot of time what do you think? I will be making small lures mainly for pearch but also for smaller pikes.
@Makelures
@Makelures 6 лет назад
Jakelol1980 I think twist eyes will be fine for those applications. I’d switch to a through wire if you were going heavier than 6 kg line, otherwise go for twist eyes
@Jakelol1980
@Jakelol1980 6 лет назад
Perfect will go for through wire when i will try to make pike jerkbaits then. The smaller ones im gonna make now will be tiny jerkbaits for perch and trout ;)

Balsa is too weak for screw-eyes if you get a hard fighting fish. I've learned that the hard way. Continuous through body wire works best. Nice lure though.

Love the video sir but the music was FAR too loud and actually drowned you out in several scenes to the point that you couldn't be heard. Try making a video with no music and just let us listen to you working or maybe just explaining the process as you go?

Another video ruined with music. Some of us like to keep our full mind on what you're doing, we want to be able to hear you, and not be distracted. And it's not just you...seems many on RU-vid copy each other in attempt to make your videos more enticing, and none of you stopped to think if it is enticing to begin with for many of us....Or is it just me? This is the second try in my attempt to get more teaching and less candy....neeeext!
