Sisal twine, twisted paper towel, even twisted dry grass all work as wicks as well

You couldn't wait until the wood wick was burning bright to turn on the camera and show evidence of success? The barely burning wick that you presented was evidence against your assertion. Next time, show the final result.

I've never tried wooden wicks. Are they one size fits all or are there 100 different sizes you need to try? That can get expensive.
