Wow, I just passed over this video, haven't seen any of your pre-2016 work. Personally I enjoy this more laid back, less energetic style of making videos. I can see why a majority of your audience like your more recent work, so I understand the increase of energy. Either way, energy or no, I will continue watching your content because it is hands down the best blacksmithing channel I have found.

I liked this so much! I am, for the first time, watching all your older videos and i must say: although the great improvements on forging and editing videos, the essence of what you are and do has been and will always be the strongest and greatest and most motivational thing you could give us! i'd really like to get there in Norwich, share some pizza and beer and have a nice chat with you (and Sam maybe!) :) So i just wanted to thank you for everything you do and tell you that i really hope this will go on for a really long time! Have a nice weekend :)

This is the first Alec Steele video that I ever watched back when it was made. I was watching AWE Me, the blacksmith show where they make things from movies and video games. I saw the title, thought of spongebob, and subscribed. I’m so glad he still makes content.

+Daniel Lea same here! A friend of mine forge welds a pipe handle onto his spatulas, much like you would with a spear. It feels really comfortable. He also forge welds/rivets the spatula part so he doesn't have to do too much drawing out, but I like the one-piece design of this one too.

Can you make one with a central rib? A bricklayer's trowel has a strong rib at the attachment point. Many cheat and just weld the handle on, but Alec, you could forge one without cheating. If you make a small one it would be an archeologist's dream, especially if made of stainless.

Hi Alec, nice video. There seems to be a cut in it where you tidy up the spatula blade and give it clean edges, particularly around the top where the handle joins. It would be good to know how you do this - file at red heat, file it cold, chisel it out, power tool or something else?
@AlecSteele
@AlecSteele 9 лет назад
Hi Lizzie! In the interest of keeping the tutorial short, it does indeed appear I did not focus on that enough! However, a reason I did not think too highly to leave it in is because it is I fact wonderfully simple! There is no filling or grinding on this spatula: it is forged to finish. To allow the edges of the spatula to be relatively even, I use the round die of my rounding hammer to push any material that doesn't go out far enough out to the edge!
@MoondyneJoe
@MoondyneJoe 8 лет назад
Alec I love your work and the way you explain they way you do things very valuable for one who is wanting to get into smithing I have a question for you please , when for example you are making a piece like the spatula and heat dissipates from the thinnest part quickly because of thickness and width etc is their any reason you couldn't apply a gas heat /blow torch to the anvil at the point you are working on, to slow down the loss of heat or would that destroy the integrity of the anvil over time? To me it just seems logical that you could work the object being made on a hot spot longer or even have a separate anvil to do such work with rather than going back and forward to the forge and reheating all the time. Thanking you Tony ( Western Australia)
@glennwiebe5128
@glennwiebe5128 8 лет назад
+Moondyne .Joe If you apply enough heat to the anvil to prevent the heat sink effect, you would essentially ruin the heat treatment of your anvil. You would be left with a very soft anvil face. However, you're on to something with the torch. If you have the torch nearby at the ready, you could very quickly heat up the spatula. If time is an important commodity, this would cut down the travel time to and from the fire.
@MoondyneJoe

Glenn Wiebe Thanks Glenn If you don't ask these questions you never know the answers Tony

Well, metals conduct heat pretty good, i wonder how did ypu make sure the handle is long enough that the user doesnt burn his hand during barbecue. Is there a formula or like a base assumption point?

+Alec Steele -- well crap, not sure how I missed that video? I'll search for it right now. I get the reasoning (I think?), I might even have added another step with an even more obtuse radius, which may or may not be as useful as a horn.

Nice! Did you make that anvil or did you buy it? I have a fisher anvil I bought which was a terrible mistake. The edges are pretty much useless and the face aint too wide. I am debating if I should sell it and buy/make another one. Can you forge pretty much anything you would on a regular anvil or is it only for small stuff? Thanks
@AlecSteele
@AlecSteele 9 лет назад
+Matt Behnke I made this anvil! There is anther video on my channel that speaks more about it! It is made out of a block of mild steel, and, I believe it is the best anvil to learn blacksmithing on!
