I really like your videos, and I enjoy your handy craft projects! I was wondering why this one ended so abruptly, I wish you concluded with some projects you are going to use with the bent wood.
This is awesome, I hope we get more of these toolmaking/meta building videos from you! Question: does anyone know when/why steaming wood is better than just soaking wood?
@@jimurrata6785 It doesn’t loosen it. It softens and becomes flexible and the moisture makes the fibers more plastic. Soaking wood just swells up the fibers.
Great video. You mentioned you used 4" ABS. That looks larger than 4" more like 6" id. I am finding solid wall ABS larger than 4" is hard to find locally in lengths larger than 2' but since it does have a higher heat rating than PVC I will keep looking. Can you mention if the ABS has held up well to multiple uses? I know folks that have built out of PVC mention theirs sags.
One thing I have learned about applying epoxy in small places or more accurately is to use soft squeeze bottles. I am using the 1 ounce bottles that come in a pool chemistry kit. The nice thing is the top pops off so super easy to fill it, cap and use. Plus the soft plastic can be flexed after the epoxy has cured and picked out of the bottle so you can use it again!
I'm glad you're feeling better. Everyone gets COVID. I had it twice and was asymptomatic. Stay healthy and remember to eat properly! Doubly so if you lose your taste..
You might want to go to a plumbing house and ask them if that is safe to heat with steam. Not for the pressure, but for the toxic fumes when pvc type pipes are heated. It's not good stuff. Please be safe. Other than that cool video!
Instead of the premade steam boiler, wouldn't an easy to build option be to have a 90 degree angle piece going down into a length of galvanized pipe with a water heater element?
You may have found Dave already, but around 3/4 of the way down his home page (ru-vid.com), he has a series of clips on steam bending. from memory he has the steam at around 5psi in his box. Probably not going to work with plastic pipe but might get a better result...
Mmmmm ... a small amount of any ammonia product added to the steaming water will make the wood fibres relax more easily making your bending tasks easier ... 😉
@@ConcreteLand ... I think the amount to use varies with type if wood your bending ... but from what I understand the Ammonia allows the cellulose in the wood fibres to relax a fair bit easier ...
a bit surprised at the lack of "wrinkly wood" jokes in the comments.. quite a group of respectable followers.... except for me of course,, cant take me anywhere
