i love the part about playing the song at 50% speed! this is a useful exercise for learning any song on any instrument! my drum teacher explained it to me like this. "its harder to play something at a stupid slow speed, but its easier to train your muscle memory and hold yourself accountable when there's space between the notes. once you've got it speeding it up becomes easy" when i say all instruments, i really mean it too! i play both drums and bass. its helped so much with both! and also playing in a band situation, it can really clear up alot of riffs and fills if you're unsure about how something goes (not every musician is a pro with a DAW unfortunately. i myself am just starting to learn)

Watching trained, professional drummers at work always is a big ego killer--just shows what a massive gulf there is between them and the weekend warrior drumming-for-fun that I do! It both makes me want to learn more and work harder on things, and makes it daunting to do so since I know how much work I have to do.
@patches4170
@patches4170 Месяц назад
How are you 4 years later? Have you gotten to where you wanted to be as a drummer? Your comment really resonated with me now
@Clinterus
@Clinterus Месяц назад
@@patches4170 tldr; I'm happy with the progress I've made, even if it hasn't been a focused conscious event. Honestly, while drumming is still important and I haven't stopped (and will never) I've been through a lot of intense life changes in the past 4 years--I was back at home living with my mom again after some hard times and three years ago I started dating the love of my life. We just got married a few weeks ago--and I quit my job and I'm going back to school in September. So my drumming hasn't had 100% of my focus. Still, I was spending 4-6 hours a week practicing and learning covers for a non-conventional hard rock/alternative cover band that also would have some GRUELLING 4-5 hour rehearsals with no breaks to crunch time for a big gig with last minute member changes. I did quit that band so I have time for school, but I've stayed with my original rock band Erase the Tapes for about 3 years, and we've been playing out recently receiving a great response. It feels good to be more consistent (tricky parts I can pull off live now just like in practice, even on house kits) and solid. Hard work pays off, even if I'm not drilling rudiments and learning new techniques and more so just challenging myself with learning new songs accurately and writing challenging drum parts. And to end off this novel of a comment--check out @erasethetapes on youtube if you want to see some of my drumming. Cheers! Would love to hear how you have progressed.

Your ability to play polyrhythms on top of grooves that just straight up bounce is incredible. Honestly the only other drummer I've seen do stuff as rhythmically complex as this is Matt Garstka. I'm not really a drummer, but this just shows me how there really is no limit as far as technical proficiency on the drums.

"I basically took what I recorded and pitched it up a perfect fifth because I like that effect" I'm pretty sure that's the classiest way you could say that you like power chords.
@vitekadolf1225
@vitekadolf1225 5 лет назад
Isaac Tschampl well, this is not the same thing, power chords in most musical way express the harmony and even tho you just hear a “blank sound” of 151 voicing, you could still know where you are, the fifth effect however works in a differend manner, you stack up a fifth to every note you play, so the voicing is just 15 (not realy a voicing) and the musical approach is totaly differend. you dont care about the harmonic functions anymore (I mean not just outlining the progression), because if you did, you’d need to have bunch of chords per measure, with this you just play whatever you like (fex. express bebop vocabulary over techno is the best thing, but whatever right..) and the fifths just create an “effect”. Why they work so well might be because of the harmonic series, you accualy hear the perfect fifth in all the pitches of the bass, but not as bright since it comes as the third tone of the series, it still sounds quite natural, but less than an for example octave pedal, it kinda does the same thing but on a differend level.

I saw Adam booted from a New Jersey basement meeting. He tried to turn it into a 60-step program by nesting quintuplets within each step. "Doing that allows you to take any number of steps, and changes how the steps 'feel' as you work them." He'd tried half measures with triplets instead of quintuplets. You can see the progression in his videos. Last time I saw him, he was laying back on a crumpled score scattered like a circle of fifths behind Carnegie Hall, gazing at the sun and mumbling about key changes. I'd seen his work so I handed him a hundred bucks, which he gleefully tore into fifteen equal pieces. Addiction to nested quintuplets is brutal. I hope he's able to get help in time.
