I love the different colours, one in a nice JCB yellow would look good. Although that might go for a walk.😮

That looks like a great way of getting round the prohibitive cost of entry. Is there any possibility of a STEP file version or Fusion 360 please? I'd like to make one with metric parts rather than try to source and buy imperial hardware.

This is a great design. What is the length of the 1/4-28 for the indicator adjustment bolt?

i’m using an entrance recorder, but fourth thread 2 1/4 inch would be better but that’s what I had on hand

1.75 long, but should be 2.25 long full thread

@@shopandmath Thank you! Have the main body 3d printing now. Making something like this accessible for a learning hobbyist is great. Thank you again for helping out the community!

Im printing it as we speak now cause i love this idea! The only problem is that i can only find 12mm rods..! How can i edit the file?? Thank you

sorry, I currently don’t have time to edit files it’s end of semester you can get them on Amazon. These are stainless steel ones they just want rust and they look kind of cool. K & S PRECISION METALS 87147 1/2 x 12 SS Rod a.co/d/eq1Jvl4

Hi Ray Question What type or brand of printer are you using? Thanks

hi Joe long time no see For the larger prints that you could see the video on, that was a K-1 and the smaller knobs I used a flash forge all the materials, PLA

Can you please give some details on the spring that you're using?
@shopandmath
@shopandmath 11 дней назад
It is a scrap piece of spring take it from a medical product. The only reason why I used it was because it was stainless steel almost any spring will work. If not, you can use two springs if you need more attention. Hopefully in a couple of months, I’ll be coming out with a 2025 version. The only thing that’s really going to change is the material that it’s printed out of and I want to use a ball point on the screw that adjusts the indicator.

@@shopandmath Thanks, I found a spring on Amazon that works well. I look forward to the 2025 version.

Yes this is relatively easy to make if you want to make it out of steel or aluminum as well there are dimensions on the drawings that are posted to give you better ideas for rough sizes I have been working on this particular adventure for about 7 or 8 years now my goal is to be able to make a super reliable durable tool at the lowest possible price and the younger generation is easily adapted to 3D printing As you probably know I teach apprenticeship and you would be surprised at the number of people that I run into that don't know how to check squareness that is including licensed tradesman this is my little contribution to try and help the situation out if you have any ideas on how to make it better even small improvements I'd love to hear it thank you for taking the time to comment it is much appreciated

Ray I was replying to davidcat1455 who didn't have a 3d printer and apparently didn't have a grasp of other CNC technologies. He thought your part was cool and I tried to point out it could be made with basic tools and common materials. I had ZERO intent to disparage your design and all the wonderful work you have done improving the model to its current state. Again, thank you for sharing the model and files. I have deleted my last reply to davidcat1455.

The colours weren’t my first choice. It just so happens that that was the plastic that I had in the machine at the time and let’s be honest it will prevent people from borrowing it. Thank you for the nice comment. I hope that you take the time to print one for yourself and leave comments. Ray

it’s actually purple And this consistent colour scheme is a bit of a theft deterrent I’m absolutely not going to defend the colour scheme that I chose. It was extra PLA plastic that I had.

A squareness tool made out of plastic? I hope this is just a demonstration unit that will eventually made out of steel. As a Journeyman Tool and Die Maker I find myself gobsmacked by the foolish use of plastic.
@shopandmath
@shopandmath 5 месяцев назад
I’m guessing you don’t have a 3-D printer? If you did, my suggestion is print one and you’ll see how well they actually work a lot of time and thought has been put into this. They can do as accurate measurement as any other square checker you can buy that’s made out of steel. The only thing I could suggest is to make one and try it out for yourself , they’re currently is four of them in the shop right now with students using them and they are extremely durable Certain components need to be replaced every six months due to breakage from students dropping them I hope this helps
