In this video we be building a trailering boat cover for a power boat. In order to quickly complete the project we will sew panels of fabric together then pattern the actual fabric on the boat. We will then reinforce the edges for fasteners and sew binding on the raw edges. This video will also show installing the Stayput Shock Cord Cover Clips, Snaps, Boat Vents, and a Zipper opening for easy entrance and exiting while the cover is on the boat. For our boat cover we picked a very water resistant fabric called Top Gun 1S from Sailrite. Top Gun 1S is a slightly breathable fabric, but an enclosed boat cover should incorporate some ventilation for good air circulation. We will also show installing two types of vents in this tutorial video. Order supplies at: www.sailrite.com

Alright, I’ve watched this 4 times. My sailrite material should deliver today. I’m ready to make a cover! Fingers crossed.

How did it turn out?
@tedsgibson
@tedsgibson 2 месяца назад
@@yanik.ottenbreit it turned out great. For my first attempt i used the cover from an easy up canopy but bought the edge material and thread from sailright. Yes the material was cheap and not made for prolonged exposure. We had a rain last week that dislodged the center support and it filled with water and ripped. However it kept the winter out of my boat! So now im ready to do it for real and buy the material and quality snaps and get to work. I followed everything in the video except i used wife’s sowing machine.

@tedsgibson Amazing! Thanks for taking the time to reply! I got a quote for 1800 CAD so I might go that route for simplicity sake, but usually, after a few more videos the confidence kicks in 😄

Your videos are FANTASTIC! I just bought a boat that is need of a lot of upholstery work. I'm inspired to invest in the equipment and learn to do it myself. My wife sews very well and I'm a design engineer by trade so between the two of us we should be able to make a nice cover and fix the seats. these are some of the best instructional videos I have seen on RU-vid. Thank you!

Lol tried to sew one of those vent caps for the first time on a boat cover I'm working on yesterday. Also tried using the lifetime thread for the first time while doing it. I had so much cover bunched up in the throat of the machine I was struggling to turn the cap smoothly. The stitches were skipping like crazy, and to make matters worse, the cap on that cheap little LED light fell of exposing the tiny circuit board inside so when I went to reposition the light it shorted and blew up. I grabbed another lamp I had which clamps to the edge of the table. It was in the way and fell several times during my attempt at sewing that cap. Ended up a disaster with a busted needle and much frustration. This was after several hours of working on the cover which was going well up until that damn cap! I knew I should have stopped and attempted the cap another day. Gotta get a better lamp set up first.

You guys do a great job with these videos and I’m gonna be doing my formula 292 FASTech. I see that you guys are a fan of doing panels horizontally which I assume is to help the water resistance. I was thinking of going it “vertically” with one seam down the middle. Some sort of locking seam with a backing to keep it symmetrical. Is that a bad idea should I stick to the horizontal panels? Thanks.

Seems like theres a newer version of the vents that include an optional louvered front piece. Would it still be recommended to put the mesh under the vent if the louvered front piece was used?
@SailriteDIY
@SailriteDIY 6 лет назад
No, the vents on the front of these new vents means you no longer need the vinyl mesh fabric sewn in. Here is the link to the new vents: www.sailrite.com/Boat-Vent-Aero-Black

I have a 1994 StarCraft islander 221 curious about what it would cost in material to make a cover like this looks about similar in size to the boat in the video
@SailriteDIY
@SailriteDIY 27 дней назад
You will need about 9 yards of fabric and the total for materials to make it yourself will cost you about $400 +-.

We have a small boat with a cover the wife made, only problem we are having is we can’t find the right cording. The stuff we got is about 3/16” and is 100% stretch. We need something with about 10-20% stretch. Can you recommend a place to get some? Thanks.

Why didn't you run one seam down the center? Seems like it would have been faster.
@SailriteDIY
@SailriteDIY 6 лет назад
That could be done, but if the seam runs from starboard to port you can sometimes save on the amount of fabric required, depending on the shape of the boat.

what was the cost of materials in all for this job? I'm contemplating doing it myself
@SailriteDIY
@SailriteDIY 2 года назад
For this boat it took about 10 yards of a 60" wide fabric. If the fabric is $16 per yards that is $160, The remaining stuff should cost about another 100 dollars, depending on what you need. I hope this is helpful.

Can you use leather for a boat cover?
@elmeradams8781
@elmeradams8781 4 года назад
I think it would be a super pain in the butt. Just in upkeep alone, never mind trying to take a bunch of leather peices, and trying to sew them together to make it look ok.

Just curious what would a Cover like this cost to purchase?
@SailriteDIY
@SailriteDIY 7 лет назад
The length of this cover is about 14 feet. So, it will take about 8.5 hours to sew this and finished the edging. Then we need to add for the extras.... The zipper opening about 1 hour, the reinforcing patches about 1 hour, the support pole vents 1/2 hour, the side and aft vents 1/2 hour. So overall it should take about 11.5 hours to complete this cover. An average canvas shop's hourly fee is about $50 to $65 per hour. So, this job would be about $575 to $747.50 for labor only (material costs would be extra). If you are a fabricator use this handy chart from the “Marine Fabricator” January February 2008 addition (it may be old, but the chart is in hours and is still very accurate) for calculating labor costs. Here is the link: www.ifaijapan.com/secure/2008mf/0108MF_DigitalEditionul.pdf Go to page 50 on this PDF.
