I love using my belt pouch for mushroom hunting. But I didn't wax it, I want the mushroom spores to spill through the canvas as I walk through the woods. Another tip for evening out the wax as it hardens, a hair dryer works great! And let's face it, every shop needs an iron and hair dryer.

One helpful tip if you want tighter weaves on these drop clothes is to wash and dry them on hot. Causes the cotton to shrink. Just be aware you might loose 6 inches on side. We found this out after washing a tent we made for my daughter.
@hollyingraham3980
@hollyingraham3980 Год назад
Good advice. It really tightens up the weave *and* it takes all the sizing out of the canvas. Without the sizing, it will take the wax better.

In the marine corps we had somethin very similar called a drop pouch and usually put it on our off side (your non shooting hand) to hold empty magazines and similar items while you were in the field and it also rolled up and out of the way as well

If you want to maximize the flopitude of the canvas after you wax it go at it after with a heat gun. Just clip it up to an edge and let the wax drip down and off the bottom. The fabric will keep just enough in the fibers to waterproof it and keep it more flexible. There’s an inverse relationship between how flexible it is and how durable it will be, but I make fabric flags and signs and melting off all the wax I can with the heat gun let’s then still wave in the wind without the design I put on running off in the rain! Sick bag too, definitely going to make a few of these for LARPs and cons, stylish and handy!

since you deal with wax on clothes so much, I would reccomend getting a snowboard/ski wax iron. Swix makes some cheap ones that work. they dont have holes for steam and are just a flat iron that do really well with wax and no clogging!

Just made one a week ago for foraging edibles in the forest. I made my bag removable with snaps so that when you fill one you can remove it and attach another and keep foraging.
@TNBushcrafter
@TNBushcrafter 2 года назад
I build them bags for foraging mushrooms, edible plants, and medicinal herbs. I have a bunch of heavy canvas I bought when one of the chain fabric stores closed. I use beeswax, you can add iron oxide and make it tinned canvas which also turns it a nice rusty color. Most of my canvas is earth tones though. There are also products like fabric ease that keeps fraying to a minimum. I also pleat the sides and bottom so when the bag is open it's rather rectangular. I use leather lacing for the drawstring. Hand carved mushroom made from antler toggle completes it. Another material ya may wanna try working with is rawhide. It is so neat when wetforming then dries completely hard.
@KarlRoyale
@KarlRoyale 2 года назад
This is a very cool build, I think I might make one for myself. Just an aside, you can also use paper towel to get the extra wax off a section of cloth. Lay down some paper towel, then the fabric on top then another layer of paper towel, THEN use the iron to heat up the cloth again. The extra wax goes into the paper towel and no matter how much you iron plenty of wax stays behind.

To sew straight lines you can install a guide or fence to butt the work up against. Since the machine is steel a strong magnet with a straight edge would work or clamp a block of material to the sewing bed.
@MaestroOblidemon

Also if you don't want a bag, you can use the waxed cloth to cover jars or cups with food that you don't want bugs getting into.
@Nanan00

The modern day variant of that is called a dump pouch and is a fairly common part of military kit to store spent mags.
@whowantsabighug

You can use the plain waxed fabric as pot-covers or wraps for food, like cling film/cling wrap, not just at LARP, as an eco-friendly alternative. Just wipe it down every so often.

A year late but… haven’t searched all comments so don’t know if this was suggested: stick tape to the arm? of the sewing machine to act as a straight line to guide the sewing. Also, while I enjoy the music, I had trouble hearing you because it wasn’t as ‘background’ as it could have been. I’m currently binging your videos; great content! 💙🇦🇺

Cool and cheap alternative to expensive store bought oilskin. But with both, you’d better stay away from fire and massive heat in general or it might leave some oily waxy stains on your clothes. I used candle wax for a fabric dyeing job (totally cool way to dye patterns) and my iron absolutely hated the wax… might consider putting some baking paper or else to save your iron 😅

Also, I retreated my oilskin coat with mix of beeswax and linseed oil plus a bit of turpentine to help it dry and a couple of ounces of food grade orange oil. The mix worked great, and I found its also good on leather and wood.

I wondered how they made waxed canvas. Neat! But when you iron it to melt the white wax that didn't soak into the fabric, I personally wouldn't put my iron directly down onto the wax. I don't want to end up with wax on anything else I iron. (I can envision destroyed clothing or other projects -- especially something that can't just be thrown in the wash) I'd use parchment paper (for cooking) between the iron and the fabric at that stage. Or, you could buy an iron just for that.

Great video! Is this the final evolution of the bag of holding idea you have mentioned in the live chats? It looks like you could add a pair of snaps to the front of the canvas bag as well so that you can close the flap over the opening when the bag is in the unfolded position. Would that work?
@CaseNumber00

I can put that on my tool belt to hold nails or whatever at work. Could also melt down some silicone instead of wax to make it water proof. Not sure which one is more water proof and will last longer but I have a feeling silicone is better for both.
