I rarely comment on youtube videos, but Walter I just had to show my appreciation for this video playlist! I had played around with wanting to start a webcomic but using the more traditional page by page format, and I came here just wanting a bit of advice on things like panelling and pacing, but once I started watching, I was like oh damn... I KNOW NOTHING. I've recommended this to my fellow artist friends who are also getting started with their webcomics!

Hi Walter thanks for the video as always. To finish the tail you're supposed to double-tap but you have to be very precise to make that work, or you're just gonna end up creating another curve. I prefer to use the enter key as you did. For the font you can duplicate the text tool and edit the copy, (font, size, kerning line height etc) and then press the lock icon so it'll keep all those properties every time you need a new text object. you can make as many as you want (one for dialog, sound fx and so forth) thanks again.

Ah, that's pretty cool. Clip does some smart stuff. Thanks for the info. Having a static setting for text is awesome. Sometimes I can get Photoshop to do it, but it seems really wiley niley when it saves settings for text and when it doesn't. Which is where I got the whole duplicating layer work around from.

@@walterostlie Your videos help Me feel motivated to make my comic (who is still a baby that hasn’t stepped into Webtoon yet, as I am making the buffer), so the feeling is mutual. Finding your channel made me feel more accompanied during the process. Before this, I wasn’t enjoying working as much as I could, as I was always thinking If I was making the right choices. Sorry for my English, I am from Uruguay and I speak Spanish. Thank you for answering my comment! It made my day. P.S. on one of your videos you asked if your audience were full time artists or not. I am a designer at Vexels graphics. And I work on commissions on my free time.

Don't forget to use fonts that are Free for Commercial Use! Most people don't check font licensing. But the font for personal use locense is NOT the same as free for commercial use. Just a tip from a freelance typesetter. =)

Yeah, no doubt. That's why I just tell people to use blambot. It's pretty obvious and clear what's free, plus you help support a great creator who's done a lot for the community.

I usually just reconnect it to the beginning point to end the tail. I draw on a 2 in 1 laptop so I actually don't have much access to my key board unless I pull up the on screen keyboard. Also, if you move the tail off to the side you can resize the ballon freely. Still probably not as nifty as ps but I make do with what I got x) Also opacity locking the letters will help you isolate the gradient or using the wand tool+inverting the selection. With resizing the letters, not sure it's what you want to do, but free transforming the letters is an option. Can't move the D above the rest or anything but you can curve the lettering or put some perspective on it.
@walterostlie
@walterostlie 3 года назад
Even when I move the tail to the side, I still can't independently transform the balloon. I create the balloon, then I create the tail. Then I use the object tool to select the tail, I move it to the side, then I select the balloon, it autoselects the tail. Maybe I got a setting off somewhere?

What is a good text size to use?
@walterostlie
@walterostlie 4 года назад
Depends on the font and your file size. When you shrink your panel to the 800px webtoon requirement, you font should be around 30-60px tall. Watch this part of the video for an idea ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-1rDMHstkQ0s.html

Hey Walter! I just started working on my first ever webtoon. I use Procreate so the lettering and bubble options are limited. But my question is, I've seen a lot of people saying that the lettering should be around 10pt font size, and this puzzles me because a lot of times it just feels too small. Is this a rule, or is it more of a guideline? Is it ok if I play with the sizes of my lettering with each bubble? Or is it truly best to keep it standardized? I know this is an old video, and you might not even return to it, but I'm not in a hurry. I will continue to create with wonky sizes until someone tells me otherwise. LOL Thanks in advance!

I went to blambot and there are options to update a license or something like that ? Do i have to buy the license for webfont or just download the free version that is non profit indie comics ? If I do get 1k subs on canvas or get featured on webtoon then I will be making profit off it. So do I have to buy the non profit free version or the webfont version that costs 40$ ? Please help
@walterostlie

You can just get the indie comic one if you're using it for your indie comic. if you ever get featured and get money, you can always upgrade later if you need to.

Pretty cool vid Walter. I enjoyed it. I came across this video looking for one part that I have yet to see anyone online cover and that's the process of doing the credit pages as seen in Marvel / DC / Image, etc...where there is a bit more thought going into it with how they design their credit pages. Do you have any videos on this or know of any videos that actually address this? If not, would you consider doing a tutorial on that? I use Illustrator, so I would prefer that over any other programs. Anyway, great job. BigLike#514
@walterostlie
@walterostlie 3 года назад
Do you mean how to technically do it or more how to achieve the aesthetic/design of it? The technical standpoint, you can do it the same way you do a regular page, except it just mostly all lettering and less art. As far as the aesthetic, I would suggest looking at the comics you have, find a few you like, mash the ideas together, and use that as your starting point for your own credit page.
@MrChiprocks1
@MrChiprocks1 3 года назад
@@walterostlie Yeah, I was thinking more on the aesthetic side of it. Off the top of my head, something along the lines of Danger Girl #5. Not your typical type of Credit page. So does a company tell the letterer what page they want the credits to be on? Or is it left entirely to the Letterer? And is there leeway for you to get creative or do they prefer to keep it simple? Thanks for the reply. Appreciate it Walter.
@walterostlie
@walterostlie 3 года назад
@@MrChiprocks1 It's not technically the letterer's job, so you can always ask if it is something they want to tackle. It's really a job for your book designer if you have one. I usually tackle the title page myself as the artist. But I'm also working on projects that I own, so I am doing work for myself for free. So the examples you like to either your letterer, designer, or artist and see who wants to tackle it. Ask them one at a time.
