How to Make a Winter Soldier Arm

I had a couple requests for how to make a winter soldier arm, so here it is. Took me a little while to figure out how to make something that resembled a mechanical arm without getting too expensive, but finally settled on a simple solution of duct tape. While this is not a completely smooth finish like the real winter solider arm, and the line pattern is different, it's one of the more inexpensive and fairly simple ways of making one.
I ended up finding some chrome duct tape after I'd already made most of the arm and spray painted it, but if you use chrome duct tape right from the start you won't have to bother with spray painting. The chrome duct tape can be found at JoAnn Fabrics or here on Amazon: amzn.to/2j59fgp
When you're wrapping your arm in duct tape, it's easiest if you have a second person, rather than having to wrap it yourself as I did. Keep the wrapping quite loose as you go, both for circulation reasons, and so the duct tape arm still fits after you cut it open. It doesn't have to be neat since you'll cover it later, just as long as the plastic bag is covered.
(The last shot was done in a mirror, so even though it looks like it's my right arm, it's actually my left)

Tony Stark was able to build this in a cave. With a box of scraps.

I did this for my Halloween costume and it turned out amazingly. I used strictly silver Duck Tape and I ended up not having to paint it at all because the color was perfect. Thank you so much for the tutorial! I got a ton of compliments!

i'm meeting Sebastian 148 days, and this looks like an easy way to do the arm, now i need to find the clothes, which will be harder
@Thewoodlandelf
@Thewoodlandelf 8 лет назад
+Sam Mulvihill - That is awesome you're meeting Sebastian! For the clothes, check a 2nd hand shop. They usually have stuff that make a good base, and only need a few adjustments. Faster and usually cheaper than making something from scratch. Plus you don't feel as bad when you cut up something used.

This tutorial helped me and my boyfriend a lot! We made a base with plastic bags and tape just like the one you did, and then we glued the pieces of foam onto it. We decided to seal it with a few layers of white glue, and finally we painted it with silver spray painting. It looked awesome ^^ Greetings from Argentina !

So I'm seeing Civil War tomorrow and I used this method and the arm looks awesome! I actually used twine on the inside as a "lace-up"method, simply because me and my friend made it a tad too small- but it's not noticeable. Hopefully people at the theater will dig it. This tutorial was excellent!

I've made a Winter Soldier arm before by layering duct tape and craft foam, but I was not very happy with it. I'm playing around with methods for my new make, and I might just end up using this tutorial because it's kind of genius. Plus, it would be easy to try to fold the duct tape scales a little differently so it looks a little more screen-accurate. Either way, the flat duct tape elbow covering is extremely useful. Thank you so much!

I love that this build, while not following the actual patter of Winter Soldier's arm actually has layers like Winter Soldier's arm. Most cosplay arms I've looked that sell for hundred's of dollars (except one) either look too plastic, too smooth, too bulky, or don't succeed in camouflaging the fact that the arm is multiple pieces to a reasonable extent. It's simple, has depth, it's cheap, anyone can do it, I love it.

I just got into cosplay, and did my first event (Firefly night) this past Friday at the "fandom bar" in town. They will be doing a Civil War event the week after the movie opens (to give people time to go see it). I'm totally doing this. I'm probably buying way too much duct tape (two 1.88-inch x 15-yard rolls of the chrome), but figure any left over will be good to have on hand.
@Thewoodlandelf
@Thewoodlandelf 8 лет назад
+ackthbbft - That sounds like a pretty good amount of tape (mine were all partial rolls, so I don't know exactly how much I used, but I think it was around a roll and a half). That's awesome they're doing a Civil War event in your town and the Firefly night too! LOVE firefly!

I just did this myself and HOLY COW it looks cool! I used silver duck tape and spray painted it afterwards with chrome and it looks sick as frick. The arm pit was really hard to get right, I forgot to fix it before I sprayed it but I'm sure I can fix it after it has dried. I couldn't find a metallic red paint but I got some red varnish for the star and it should work. Thanks!

Great job with the arm! But I have a question, how do I wrap the second part without cutting off my blood circulation?
@Thewoodlandelf
@Thewoodlandelf 7 лет назад
Do it in sections. So instead of doing one continuous wrap, tear off pieces of tape that are several inches long and stick them all over your plastic-covered arm, making sure the pieces overlap each other. That will keep it looser, but still allow it to be one solid duct tape form.

This is kind of a stupid question, but how did you wrap your shoulder with the bag? And how did you wrap the bag on your shoulder with the duct tape? Did you have someone do it for you?
@Thewoodlandelf
@Thewoodlandelf 8 лет назад
Don't worry, not a stupid question at all. I couldn't get the camera to film it well there, so it's kind of missing from the video. But basically for the shoulder part, I cut the bag out at the armpit, so there's nothing there on the bottom side. Then I just put tape over the bag on the top side of my shoulder and put scales on it. The scales make it stiff enough to stay in place, and since there is nothing on the bottom side / armpit, I can still move my arm easily. Kinda hard to type it out, but does that make sense? I did my own, but it's probably a lot easier if you have someone who can put the tape on for you while you hold it on your shoulder.

Thanks. Yeah, that's usually how my costumes come about too, lack of funds makes a person get creative, lol.

@Thewoodlandelf

+jerry dehart Yeah, it's a bit time consuming. I did most of my tape folding while watching a movie to break up the monotony.
