TIP: I just hung a smaller wheelie bin inside a bigger wheelie bin. First took off the bottom of the small one and put a rack/grille (from an old fridge) and secure it. Then I took with a saw from the bigger bin the lower part of the front, screwed it on a tub (drawer) and ready. Works like a charm.
Hi, Why didn't you cut the deck plate hole and then install the drain plug? That way you wouldn't have to climb into the bin. You only need to reach through the hole.
Good idea using these old Trash collection bins for portable warm bins. I wish I'd seen this a couple weeks ago as I could have bout several dozen of them surplus from a local municipality that was replaceng their old ones. I like it. If you put some wet news papers in the bottom before you load it and it will keep the fill from working down around your bottom tray, at first and then it will compost later.
Thanks very much Jordan. I am glad you enjoyed the video and if you make one of these worm farms I hope it does well for you. I hope you also have a great Chrissy :)
Thank you very much, I am glad you have got something from the video. I used 6 inch or 150mm deck plates. You could probably get away with 100mm but I thought 150 would be better access. I dont think I would go much bigger as you would be taking a lot out of the bin and this might affect the structure of the bin. Good luck with make your worm farm. I am sure it will all go well. Thanks for watching and commenting :)
hey bud Im Soooo glad you made this vid cuz you gave me a bunch of great ideas. Thank you for sharing this vid. A few drinks and watching this and some other vids and this gave me a few Great ideas. this was an insightful vid Thank you. Denver from Ohio.
Thanks Elyse. Yes being in a climate where the worms would need to be put in a protected place where you would be comfortable having them. Sometimes there is just no place. Thanks for watching and commenting :)
Do you mean flow through in terms of ventilation or the harvesting of vermicaste? I feel the vermicaste is flow through as you put the food in the top and harvest from the bottom but I would love to see your idea. Thanks for watching and commenting :)
Hello I love this video I've watched it like 5 times and want to make one I've got the bin and just want to know what size the deck plates are please get back to me ASAP Thankyou
I have made a worm farm out of the wheelie bin , but When I open the lid after a couple of days all the worms have crawled to the top, do you know why, is it not wet enough too acid I just don’t know, have you got any suggestions. Kind regards Steve
Oh bummer Th Linn gill. I thought of this idea the other day when had seen it done for the Bokashi also (by the way) and am glad some one did the better latching and access holes stuff. Thanks! now to get the bins! What would work as a good drain tray? size. Great job well done by the way.
Brilliant. Thanks. Our council is about to charge for taking garden waste, so our green wheeliebins are redundant. The council will take them back... but we compost our garden waste so it will be great to be able to convert food waste into fertiliser
That sounds like a great idea. Our council recently started a new rubbish collection contract and gave us the option of returning the bins. Now I have 3 bins to store material for the compost heap or worms. Maybe even a new worm bin :) I hope yours works out well. :)
Thanks :) You can get them from a boat accessories shop. Ask for deck plates and they should know what you mean or you can find them online. Thanks for watching and commenting :)
Great video John! I would love to have a worm bin, but I would have to take them inside my house in the winter here...not really sure I want to do that :D
You could put insulation around the outside of the bin - hay (bales, if it gets REALLY cold, or is cold for a very long time) hessian, expanded foam (panels with metal on outside are more durable), whatever you can think of that's suitable / can afford / have lots of sitting around doing nothing. Needs to be waterproof-able too (black plastic?)
great video.. ive made one of these before I saw your video, unfortunately I left out the valve and just put in drainage holes with a collection tray.. whats the status on it how? is it working well? do most the worms stay above the deck holes? have watched a few of your vids, keep up the good work.. ps drill the deck holes at the start so you don't have to climb in the bin to tighten the valve ;)
Thank you very much. The worm farm is doin well. It really hasnt missed a beat since I put the worms in it. I havent had a lot of liquid from it but it has a lot to buildup to get up to the valve and havent harvested any worm castings yet but there is also a lot of space to fill there as well. Thanks for watching and commenting :)
Ahh man, you beat me to it. Recycling a recyclebin i mean. :-) I've got a little addition to it, to make it "flowthrough". I will sent you some pictures if you want, when I finnally get it done.
I dont take an responsibility if you get caught Brendan :P I didnt forget about Maggie. I actually considered going up to the school and taking her out of class so she could help but I figured it would be quicker if I did it myself lol. Children can be a great help. They are like little minions. Thanks for watching and commenting :)
Love the idea. I am currently looking for a project like this. I just have a few questions if you dont mind answering. 1. Instead of nuts and bolts could it be possible to use just stainless pop rivets? 2. The stuff you use to seal it up. Can that be replaced with silcone(marine grade)? 3. I wil be making this so i can harvast the worms for fishing and not so much the castings. You think it would be better for me to have the decking holes vertically instead so i can access more parts? All in all a great video howto go about it. And any help would be appieriated.
Thank you very much. I am glad you founf the video interesting. Yes you could use stainless stell steel pop rivets. I choose nuts and bolts because I feel they are more secure but rivets should work just fine. Any silicon should be fine but I would imagine marine silicon would be better so yes this would be fine. The lid of the bin allows for adequate access from the top. You could add more deck plates in higher locations to allow access at different locations of you wanted to. I hope that helps :)
The worm farm is going well. I have been able to get a good amount of liquid from it and the castings are slowly building up. I didnt add a huge number of worms to it when I started so I dont expect them to eat a whole lot until they build up numbers a bit. Now that it is spring here I expect them to start breeding pretty quick. Thanks for watching :)
I'm sure that you thought to reach through one of the 3 deck plate ports to put the nuts on the back of the spigot and deck plates, and didn't actually crawl into the bin. Lol
News Headline - "RU-vid Gardener Interviewed By Australian Police After International Rash Of Wheelie Bin Thefts". Did you forget that you have a young daughter who would have easily fitted into that bin for part securing purposes or have you more scruples than me? I realised early on that my children had small hands and bodies that fitted between brackets, under benches and, well, anywhere I didn't fit. It may sound cruel but now, as adults, they don't have to ask which way a nut screws on.
