In this video, I am going to show you how to transform Ableton's grand piano sound, which leaves much to be desired, into a great sounding, highly playable piano using only 4 stock devices
1. EQ Eight - To remove the overpowering low end, a few mid-range trouble frequencies, and boost the high frequencies.
2. Saturator - To add some character and body
3. Compressor - to keep everything feeling nice and tight
4. Reverb - to make the piano feel more like it is in a room.

Hmm. This definitely brought some life to it, so a great starting point. It's a little oversaturated IMO, as it gets a bit fuzzy when you lay into it. I'm struggling to figure out how to get it to sound dynamic while emphasizing clarity and "airiness". It's possible that the sampled audio doesn't have enough natural harmonics to reach the clarity I'm trying to achieve though...
@LiveKeyboardist
@LiveKeyboardist 3 года назад
You could pull back a bit in the saturation. At the end of the day, this is mostly upgrading a medium sample. That being said, I am curious if you end with a result you like. Definitely let me know what you come up with.

Randomize the velocity. It’s akin to humanizing piano roll notes in logic. **if you haven’t tried it out already! 🙂
@blakehandson2790
@blakehandson2790 2 года назад
to add, no human can hit a note at the same precise velocity which is how ableton defaults each note (100 velocity) so it has no contrast which equals not sounding realistic. hope it helps!
@thetylersherman
@thetylersherman 2 года назад
@@blakehandson2790 Definitely worth a shot. I think I should do that more often now that Ableton makes it super easy to randomize in increasingly large but specified increments.

is this info dated? I recently did buy the ableton suite and the grand piano comes with all of that you mention, I think it's sounds pretty awesome.. coupled with the push 2 controler it's sounds so intricate and expressive.. I actually hated any piano synths until I tried this.. only problem I have is that I'd like the sustain to not be infinite so it cuts of on it's own after a few seconds.. it just never stops.. ok I like to keep the sustain on all the time it's fun :)

Why are this not default presets in Ableton Live - I want to play the piano not waste my time in something I have absolute no idea of what is. So many controls. Am I using the wrong software? Else good work.
@LiveKeyboardist
@LiveKeyboardist 3 года назад
Dennis, you are asking the right questions here. As far as if you’re using the right software, I think the software you choose to use at the end of the day is just personal preference. If you like able to workflow, I would stick around and just fill out your sound library with third-party instruments overtime. As far as presets go, if you’re looking for a great piano sound you can’t go wrong with any of the native instruments VST sounds. There are of course other options, I really like the grandeur. Also worth looking into addictive keys or keyscape. If you switch to another DAW some things will be better and some things will be worse.

Man! Can’t find a video anywhere upon how so set up a sustain pedal connected to the keyboard that is midi controlling ableton. LIKE DOES ANYONE USE SUSTAIN PEDALS MUCH?
@LiveKeyboardist
@LiveKeyboardist 3 года назад
Hey Eric. I feel your frustration. Are you trying to use a midi pedal to control actual sustain on a piano patch, or would you like to map it to something else? I think the reason there aren’t a lot of tutorials explaining this is because by default sistine petals will control the sustain on your piano. If you can provide me a little bit more detail about what you’re trying to do, I’m confident I can help you figure that out

@@LiveKeyboardist Hey thanks for responding! I found out the problem. So I just wanted to use Ableton's stock piano patch to play and record piano. My setup was a keyboard with its sustain pedal connected to the computer via USB midi. WHAT HAPPEND WAS I WASN'T GETTING ANY SUSTAIN BECAUSE I WAS PRESSING THE SUSTAIN PEDAL BEFORE HITTING RECORD. Because of that, Ableton was reversing the polarity of the pedal. SO MY PROBLEM WAS THAT I WAS EITHER SWITCHING THE POLARITY OF THE PEDAL OR I WAS JUST DISABLING IT SOMEHOW. ??? I works fine now that I got that rule down. HEY THANKS FOR YOUR REPLY MAN. Because you seemed really helpful I subscribed upon reading your reply to me earlier. ;)

Hey Matt! Yes. You will need to swap EQ 8 for EQ 3 (or another EQ) and use the regular compressor instead of glue compressor.
@alejo5007
@alejo5007 3 года назад
Tokyo Dawn Labs has both an EQ and a compressor if you need them (both great and free). Also, remember that Ableton Lite version doesn't have a saturator (idk where you can find one tho). Btw, while the final result of this video is better than the raw piano, i'd not say it's great (no ofense to the creator of the video. I think he did a great job but the stock piano is pretty bad), so don't worry if you can't replicate this. If you need a good free piano, you could grab Piano1 (that's the name of the plugin) or the lite edition of the Production Voices' Grand Piano. Both are compatible with the Ableton Lite version, as well with othes DAW's

THE chaining of eqalizers and duplication of saturator made me feel really unconfortable. I think the sound got worse from your process. The only thing that is getting improved by each step of nonsense you're doing is the way you play samples of music to test the sound, they're becoming more elaborate and tricking your brain into thinking the sound got better. Just play one note without any emphasis for the a/b comparison and focus on the timbrical changes to notice you're just sprypainting a shit and adding digital clipping cracks between devices in the chain, maybe notice the cracks from your voice in the microphone too. The piano rack is already provided with coloring tools that are basically the same you used but already set up and tuned for the case, maybe you can get a better result by further tuning some parameters in the rack devs instead of wasting cpu like that outside of it 👌✌

Pretty common to chain eqs but I’m not sure about saturators. Anyway the sound of the piano got better so whatever how you do it the results are there
