How to make an alcohol stove that's super easy, highly efficient and ultralight - Perfect for boiling water for outdoor Coffee. - Plumbers Mat - geni.us/27R1uyn
Having toyed with most penny can stoves, I found this one to be the best alcohol stove so far. It's based on the Fancy Feast Stove, only smaller, lighter and better looking.

These videos are SUPER! I purchased a Nanopresso and Barista Kit for my husband’s 60th birthday on 7/16. They came in the mail today and I couldn't wait to give it to him! He is passionate about 2 things, espresso and backpacking. After watching your videos, we know all about the operations and ins and outs. We are stoked to try out this baby. But the alcohol stove video was over the top. So amazing to see your detail...I know I’m sort of late in the game, but is the giveaway over? Bill would love one to top off his already perfect 60th birthday gift. If not, thanks anyway for the fun lessons. Crazy for espresso in California.

I just made this after seeing this video. I didn’t have any plumbing mat on hand but tried fibreglass insulation and it works great! Time will tell if it’s going to last but seems good and is cheap/free if you have it lying around.

4:30 - It is possible to make a similar stove without purchasing a carbon felt mat. Take a soda can, cut horizontal strips with the same height as the outer can, make vertical grooves in this strip, spaced 10-20mm or 1/2", resulting in something like this: ~~~~~~~ Wrap this strip over the bottom of the inner can, using as many strips as needed to hold the two cans together. The grooves create capillarity between the cans, working like a wick and vaporizing the alcohol like the Carbon Felt, if not better, as aluminum conduce heat better.

Great vid. Like others I subscribed after you made the nanopresso videos. Where do you get your burning Alcohol?
@GadgetViper
@GadgetViper 5 лет назад
I get it from Go-Outdoors : www.gooutdoors.co.uk/vango-bio-ethanol-spirit-fuel-1l-p347362 , before I found that I was using mentholated spirits, but that was a bit smelly.

Would absolutely love a shot at receiving this cute little stove :) What type of alcohol do you burn, and where do you get it from? Also, what's the easiest way to put out this stove fire without just leaving the alcohol to burn off?
@GadgetViper
@GadgetViper 6 лет назад
I'm in the UK, so you can't buy pure alcohol from the shelf, so I've been using this - www.gooutdoors.co.uk/vango-bio-ethanol-spirit-fuel-1l-p347362 it works really well.

Nice video. I subscribed after watching your nanopresso videos. You’ve got a relaxed and very watchable style buddy. Videos about hammocks would be awesome. I’d be interested in winning the stove. Looks great. 👍🏼

YES!!!! Thank you so much for doing this and even showing my comment on your video! This is genius. Quick question, might be stupid one, but what do you use to make your windshield please?
@GadgetViper
@GadgetViper 6 лет назад
Enriqué Gonzales I actually did go through that today as well! But when I edited the video, I worried that it was too long so I cut it out :( it's basically a tin foil tray that you buy for raosting a turkey. You cut a long strip out and then take a paper hole punch (that you use for ring binders) and piece holes along the bottom edge. You then just roll it up and tuck it inside your cool pot. Works really well with the alcohol stove.

GadgetViper ah I see. I’m gunna try make my own too. Thanks, really appreciate this. So simple but it looks great and you demonstrate it well in your videos. I love the inginuity in it. Cheers!

Hi.... Great videos. I started watching your videos doing some research about the nanopresso... Which I also purchased because of your video reviews... Along with the Barista Kit....... I love it by the way... .. But I have a question about your stove.... Have you tried to use cotton or some other material other than the plumbing mat..?
@GadgetViper
@GadgetViper 3 года назад
Yes, just about anything will work, cotton is fine, the only downside is that when the fuel runs out, the cotton will start to burn from the top down. If you have a way of snuffing out the flames just as it's about to die, it would be fine. I've actually switched to a new material, it's called ceramic fibre paper.
@Sokol10
@Sokol10 2 года назад
Instead "plumbers mat" - carbon fiber fel, can use fiberglass cloth or insulation wool, ceramic wool, permalite, or more mundane materials like: Cotton, linen (Trangia B25 Spirit burner internal wick is in linen), jeans... cotton balls, oakun...steel wool (but don't lst longer), or any natural material that is very absorbent. I've made one that instead cloth wick (of any kind of material) have a "capillarity wick", a sandwich of soda can aluminum sheets: One flat + one with vertical grooves at each ~1 cm + one flat The sheets have the same the height of the external can, this sandwich create fiction that hold the two cans together - can put the stove upside down; and capillarity for generate the alcohol vapors. Light fast like cloth wicks and work well.

How do you extinguish the stove after you’re done with it? Do you use water, or let it burn off all the alcohol?
@MrRainyCastle
@MrRainyCastle 6 лет назад
How effective is it outdoor? And how do you protect the flame and the extreme light burner from the wind?
@GadgetViper
@GadgetViper 6 лет назад
It works really well outdoors, but you'll need a windshield around it. I made mine from a tin foil baking tray, just cut it to fit the height of your pot, then punch holes low down using a paper hole punch and it works perfectly :)

Sweet little video! I may have to try this. Hey, seeing as you're so obliging with viewer requests for how-to videos... How about showing us how you do that cool little click sequence at 12:50 :-) Please don't tell us it takes years of practice and can only be learnt on certain London streets :-D
@GadgetViper

There are a few tricks that can be learnt on the streets of London, that's not one of them ;) I think the click sequence was a fluke, did sound cool though :) Thanks for watching, have a great day :)

If you make the inner piece shorter the stove will be more fuel efficient.
@Sokol10
@Sokol10 6 месяцев назад
Yes - like the ones he show at start of the video; but whit the pot close the boil time will be longer. Several tests show the ideal height for the flame of an alcohol stove is around a 1" (25mm)
@MatoNupai
@MatoNupai 6 месяцев назад
@@Sokol10 WRONG. 1inch is entirely arbitrary. I inch may give you the fastest boil but a real thru hiker wants fuel efficiency and a reasonably fast boil. Remember the taller the flame burns more fuel. You can use a MiniBull Design BIOS STOVE that uses 30 ml of Heet to boil 2 cups in 5 minutes You can use a MiniBull Design ELITE STOVE that uses HALF of the of the BIOS You can use the FLAT CAT STOVE by Flat Cat Gear that only uses 43% of the fuel used by the BIOS STOVE. Take a look at the Flat Cat stove you will see the jets are only 5-6 millimeters from the top. My Ultimate stove has jets only 5 millimeters from The top and was efficient as THE FLAT CAT STOVE My MAHALO STOVE had jets only 8 millimeters used less than the BIOS STOVE Another stove that is in the same category of my Ultimate Stove, and the Flat Cat Stove is the Gram Weenie stove designed by End2End Trails now built by Sam at Batch Stoves It's all comes down to the question "IS IT A FAIR TRADE TO TAKE 1 1/2-2 MINUTES LONGER FOR THE BOIL IF YOUR FUEL LASTS MORE THAN TWICE AS LONG?" MY answer is a RESOUNDING YES!" In 2017 I lived off grid near Taylor, Arizona and 1 gallon of denatured alcohol in my Ultimate lasted 6.5 MONTHS. I using that alcohol to make prepare 3 meals a day, coffee every morning, and occasionally coffee in the evening
