Maybe you should read less about flying saucers and more about electrochemistry?

Not just a container, as seen on wikipedia, the aluminium is essentially the fuel of the battery. From another website: "To generate electrical energy, this battery relies on oxidation of aluminum at the anode, which releases electrons, and a reduction of oxygen at the cathode, which uses electrons. The movement of electrons through an external circuit generates an electric current that can be used to power simple devices." I'm suspect the salt water doesn't work as the KOH as an electrolyte as the OH- needed in the reaction is present only due to auto-ionization. 0.7 volts may seem low but it can supply a decent amount of current (100mA). I've a miniature model car powered by a tiny postage stamp sized aluminium air batter. With just a few drops of salt water it is surprisingly quick. Source: I'm an electrical engineer..
