This American flag cross has been a popular item for a few years now. They are easy to make and sell really well at local craft and makers markets.
I decided to try a couple different types of wood, at different price points to see which was the easiest, quickest, and most cost effective to make.
I hope this video helps you out and gives you a few pointers when you are batching items out for your next craft or makers market.
Thanks for watching!!

I built one of these today. I’m able to get 3 out of one cedar fence picket. Also, built a jig after building the first one so I can batch a bunch out quickly. Thanks for the video!

Thank you so much for watching! Glad it helped. I need to re-do the thumbnail because it does not do it justice; the crosses are much more rich and vibrant in real life.

I really appreciate that you were able to clearly show us how to do this, not once but twice, in less than 9 minutes while other makers took 20, 30, 40 minutes. Well done! I'll be using option 2 but we don't get a lot of cedar here so pressure treated pine will be our action. Thanks for a great instruction!

I've been wanting to tackle this classic project for a while and I thought just in time for Independence Day would be a perfect time. Super simple woodworking project that sells super well, and when made from the fence pickets, the overhead is next to nothing.

What did you use for bracing on the backside of the cedar?
@boydstongrove
@boydstongrove Год назад
@@jimmyturner5589 I used more strips of cedar, exactly how I did it on the pine. I left that out of the video because I felt the video was getting a little long. Sorry about that.
@jimmyturner5589
@jimmyturner5589 Год назад
With the cedar bracing on the back, did you leave it at 5/8 thick or trim it down some? I know on the pine, you split it down the middle.
@boydstongrove
@boydstongrove Год назад
@@jimmyturner5589 good question! I shaved it just enough to smooth the surfaces, but I left it thicker because cedar is so soft, I wasn’t sure if there would be too much movement in the wood if I made it thinner. Maybe it wouldn’t make a difference, not sure.

So two things I'd like to add. That benzo torch accessory is absolutely amazing and I highly recommend it. I did prefer water base stain because as I was (stupidly) painting I would flick paint on the other pieces by accident. The stain is hard to find in stores for some reason though.
@boydstongrove
@boydstongrove 9 месяцев назад
you are correct on both points; That creator torch tool is awesome, I use it quite a lot. And yes, those colored stains have to be ordered, that's why I ended up using paint instead. I'm sure the stain looks much better.

I used Michael's brand acrylics called Artist Loft. Good thing about cheap paint is the coverage it week enough that you can still see the wood grain through it.

Very interesting project. I've never seen cedar in Slovakia, but it'll be more expensive than line, over here. If I were to make this I would use tongue and groove pine, which costs about 12 usd/m2, for a 1 metre long and 10 cm wide board then 1.20 usd.
@boydstongrove

Tongue and groove is a great idea! I don’t know if anything stateside that would be narrow enough, but I guess I could cut my own tongue and groove. Thanks for watching!

I'm more curious about the paint process. Did you dilute, or just go at it?
@boydstongrove
@boydstongrove 2 месяца назад
Sometimes I do, but for this project, I painted a layer on and then wiped it down with a towel until I could see the wood grain again.
@hansdegroot8549
@hansdegroot8549 Год назад
We have some special tongue and groove her, called tatranský profil, referring to the High Tatras. When you put them together, the sanded sides will not form a smooth surface, but it has a "valley" at the connecting point. (no need to make round-overs of chamfers). The tongue and groove parts will run horizontally, so the whole cross will need backer boards to make it more rigid. At the moment I cannot do any woodworking because I broke my ankle So I only watch RU-vid videos on woodworking now.

Did you thin your craft paint with water? I bought some and it completely covers the burned wood so much that i had to wipe off the majority with a rag to get the wood to show through.
@boydstongrove
@boydstongrove 9 месяцев назад
Sometimes I thin it with water, but usually I just apply it and immediately wipe it down with a paper towel. Sometimes I will just apply it with a paper towel like you would a stain and that way I can wipe as I go. It also helps to buy cheap paint. Nicer paints have more color pigments and will cover too well.

Yep, I did that. But once on Amazon it gave different sizes. I thought the one's you were showing were 1", just wanted to make sure before I ordered. I've done flags & crosses using a dremel to do the stars. Pretty good at it, but TIME consuming!! I'll give your method a try, I like the looks of the stars being raised and burned. Thanks.

The fence pickets are just under 3/4" thick and I split them for the back braces, making the overall thickness about an inch thick, so you should be safe to go with 3/4" nails.
