Today we talk about fruit tree guilds and get started on making one of our own.

By the way, check out the people we bought some of our plants from.
They've got a RU-vid channel and they're pretty cool.

As pruning stems stimulates growth above ground, pruning roots in transplants has similar effect.

Good video, Jim Bob. I'm looking to plant a lot of apple trees later this year, along with plants that go well underneath it. I read somewhere red currant is also a good one to go with the apple tree. BTW, Comfrey is excellent in attracting bumble bees. Greetings from the Netherlands.

I have yet to get my comfrey to bloom. It does not like our hot humid summers here. Maybe one day. Red currants will not grow here as they do not do well in temps above 85 which happens here most of the year.

Finally, a hands-on explanation and demonstration of a fruit tree guild. Reading is not enough for me to understand. Thank you! P.S. - where did you get the comfrey? I want some. People are saying it's invasive. How are you going to control it later?

I got it from a local place here in Jacksonville Fl, called Eat Your Yard Jax. If you are in the area you can find them on the web. There are apparently two types of Comfrey and one is invasive and the other is not. I can tell you that this one has not spread at all. In fact I recently took a cutting to add it to the other guilds I am trying to build, though it did grow back after the cat ate the cutting I have had no problem with it spreading.

Get "bocking 14" or Russian comfrey. It only spreads by root division. Regular comfrey spreads by root division AND seeds, making it very invasive. Bocking 14 (Google it / on amazon) is easy to control, plus one healthy plant can be broken up after 1 year in to several more.

Well thank you, I do try to talk to the camera as if it was one of you standing there with me.

Love your way of teaching. Will you do a video on what to plant under a fig tree?

I will. I do want to research it a bit to make sure that I am giving you the best information I can find. I would imagine however that it should be somewhat similar to the apple tree guild. My editor (my daughter) is very busy so she is waaay behind on video production so we are running a few months from shooting to releasing but we are working on that. Look for something to come out soonish.

I just did this with an artichoke and made a video about it as well! Great video!

Wanted to do something similar but then read I need a second apple tree for cross-pollination. Not sure I have the room. Thoughts?

It is better but I will say only one of my apple trees has produced blooms and it has produced a small amount of fruit. So it will probably produce fruit but not nearly as much as if there were several. You might try to talk your neighbors into growing an apple tree.

Is a second apple tree needed for cross-pollination?

Yes most recommend that you have at least 3 but two different ones should do the trick. I have an Anna and a Golden Dorset.
