I'm just dipping my hands into the concrete field and mud. collected raw mud and have it strained for my future rocket stove - combo bread oven coming this summer....made a cement rocket stove but haven't fired it up yet. Now making small outdoor gnomes, sun faces, pots and poured doll's using child's toys with differed cement mixes from straw, perlite, paper pulp and styrofoam. People are getting a lot of gifts for Christmas and my yard is going to look awesome.

Great stuff! I was doing a little wood carving of an Easter Island figure that I forgot about. Thanks for reminding me. :) Also, I and other engineering students made a concrete canoe and competed with it; another time, l and students made a cardboard and duct tape boat. Thank´s dude for sharing you knowledge, I make historical sculptures of big size in Spain and it was a huge effort to shape them out and I couldn´t get much money for the work they had. I started with poliester and epoxy resin but the resoult wasn´t good enough, marble and stone got better results but the effort was even bigger and taxing!. I started to see an interesting channel called paleocarton and I could foresee the possibilities of working with cardboard but you have actually open my eyes to a more efficient and ecological method to perform my job. I wish I had learnt that during my studies in Fine Arts, I would had avoid so many head aches... You taught me in that video more than all my scupture teachers in many years.

Oh wow, this is amazing. I was wondering if there is a need to have a wire mesh to improve structural integrity.
@fauxrock
@fauxrock 6 месяцев назад
Actually, I’ve been building these statues since 2009 without any mesh being used. I would admit it would be stronger with the mesh but I wouldn’t use wire mesh. I would use a textile mesh which is far superior but that being said I won’t be putting any type of mesh going forward as it’s not needed. Yes, the texture would cover the fiber, but in the case of this video, the statue needed some definition added by taking off some of the extra mud that wasn’t necessary

Jim, Just found your videos earlier this morning. Very interesting 'sculpture creation' videos. Most surprising is the materials and methods you've used to make your sculptures. I'm curious. Any idea how many screws you had to used for each one of your large Moai statues? Also, by chance, are there shorter screws available that could be used in these constructions? I'm guessing, all the stones shone in the background around your residence, were made by your company. Really enjoyed watching both of your Moai statue videos this morning. Very unique process! Thanks You, Jim Dasher Spectrum Graphics Seattle metro

Thanks for the positive feedback and I appreciate you watching my video. We use about 2 pounds of inch and a quarter drywall screws and yes there are probably shorter screws that could be purchased. These are just handy at Lowe’s and inexpensive. . All the different rock and stone features that you’ve used in the video weren’t my home… I was shot in our manufacturing plant. Although when I place the statue, that’s outside my shop at home.

On the texture have you ever tried a hypertufa mixture incorporated into your concert mixture? A strong HYPERTUFA recipe -> *1 part Portland cement *1 part Pete moss *1 part perlite with sand. 1/2+1/2 or 1/4+3/4 … this is a mixture when you want to make something concrete really look old as if you found something ancient, you can cast anything using it however something as big as easter island statues I bet you can find the ratio for your mixture. Try casting a elephant ear leaf this can be done by digging a hole in the ground placing the leaf in the hole or it can be done over a large object putting mud down (you need give)over the object then lay the leaf on the mud then put the hypertufa mixture on the leaf. Just a thought 💭 you can test it out. Great job you guys have done here!

So at 7:38 in the video you guys apply hydro seal in the form of a seemingly very fluid cement slurry. So are you mixing a ton of hydro seal into portland cement and using that as a top sealant coat? A concrete layer that in itself is the sealant coat? Also sorry for the constant questions. Also I'm guessing that's the reason your acrylic watered down paints manage to penetrate at all, since there is still a level of outside concrete that could suck it in but it prevents water from being sucked in any further than just the superficial surface.
@fauxrock
@fauxrock Год назад
Hydro sealer is a product that has a base of Portland cement. That couple with the acrylic admixture makes for a very watertight coat.

That’s not a silly question…Tradition would have a rebar or wire armature, which is the structure of the statue. In my case, that was a Cardboard armature, which has no structural value, even with the cement being added. I have chosen to utilize textile reinforcement and I can assure you the statues that I made back in 2009 or still with us today and strong as ever and will continue to be. Rebar and wire can rust and weaken overtime. The textile reinforcement that I’ve utilize will be here for hundreds of years.

Thank you. I want to create statues, large ones for outside. I did make a six foot shark for my grandson, about thirty five pounds, but not weather worthy. I would like to make something similar to what you did on a very tight ssi kind of budget. Looking for options. Have a very nosy neighbor on horseback even trying to deter. That or making storks with goggles looking back at her kind of mindset right now. Thank you for info.

Wow! My husband actually purchased me a resin Moai from Toscano magazine...about 14 years ago. He's about 6 foot tall and weighs maybe 60 pounds. Still looks great. VERY EXPENSIVE even back then. Sure would like to get him a buddy! Also had my heart set on building a Stone Henge feature. All this time I was trying to figure out how to do this, and after stumbling across your site and watching your stone making vids...you make my dream seem possible! But what I really want to know is....Do you sell these already made?

Yes sculpting methods are a way to make many things. It requires more skill on my opinion.

@@fauxrock: Wait a minute. Technically you are sculpting, just using a cardboard medium to do so. And, not necessarily more skills, just different skills. I guessing, what you do could also be easily done with styrofoam, it would just be more messy.
@fauxrock
@fauxrock 11 месяцев назад
@jayedwin98020: I think you’re a bit confused… in sculpting, one starts out with a block of material and chisels the way to the end result,such as like what Michelangelo… the process that I’ve used is the reverse of sculpturing. I started with nothing… Starting with just a small scrape of cardboard cut and screwed together, One piece of cardboard at a time until my creation emerged. From there. I still had to add a mixture and texture it, stain and seal it, all. The reverse of sculpturing is a whole different type of talent. Thanks for your feedback. I appreciate you watching my video.
@jayedwin98020
@jayedwin98020 11 месяцев назад
@@fauxrock: By definition, sculpting is a far broader area than just the one type of sculpting Michelangelo has done. FYI: "Sculptors use additive and subtractive techniques to create sculptures. Additive means to bring materials together, while subtractive means to take away from the base material. Four main techniques exist in sculpting: carving, assembling, modeling, and casting." No confusion here. What your sculpting is, is "additive", and definitely considered to be a type of sculpting, even if you're only adding cardboard and cement together. Your net results is definitely a sculpture.
@fauxrock
@fauxrock 11 месяцев назад
@jayedwin98020: in reviewing this matter, I will apologize for my condescending, sounding reply to your sculpture line…. I always hate it when I learn something I don’t know the hard way I stand corrected. My good sir humbly, so thanks so much for your positive feedback I appreciate your time.

@fauxrock

Well it was very rudimentary and archaic methods that they use to hand, carve and chisel the statues at a real stone. The current process that I’m using it’s very simple and quick and inexpensive.

Your work is quite impressive on its own merits. However, I have the worlds smallest completely intact Moai in the world at 19 inches, dwarfing the previously smallest Moai in the world at the British Museum. It is a scaled down version in perfect proportion to the best preserved ones on Easter Island. Mine includes the Pukao (topknot) made of Red Scoria. Everything is perfect including the birdman and other carvings on its back. So, it was a bit difficult looking at your head pieces. I do question why you do not outline the entire body of the Moai instead of just the head.
