Hey man, great video. I have a recommendation on the epoxy leaking issue you experienced. Use the same setup, but before putting the wood into the mold try laying down a thick silicone mat. Throw some weights on top and the silicone mat should create enough of a seal to prevent leaks. I had this theory in the past and recently tested it on 2 projects, one I made a video about. I made an “epoxy river” style design for some napkin holders for my wife to test my theory and it worked perfectly, although my project was much smaller than your project but the process should work the same as long as the bottom surface of your wood is flat.
I remember my first epoxy pour. Coincidently it was the same day as my first epoxy leak. Top tip- don’t ever pour epoxy in a room with a carpet in. I also learnt that on the same day. Loved the look of the tables. They came out really well. Loved the video. 👍
Thanks for your honesty. I've recently found you on you tube. I'm a relatively new woodworker and I like you content better than anyone else I've watched on RU-vid. Your accent sounds like your from my wife's hometown of hickory nc......
Thanks for the vid, I have cookies drying in my basement and I want to make some rustic tables, showing mistakes is always appreciated! And onyx is pronounced on-ix. Keep it up!
I think woodworking is not actually an artistic hobby but a psychological exercise in problem solving. We make mistakes and then figure out what to do to correct them. Things don’t always turn out the way we plan- but they always turn out the way they’re supposed to be. I’m sure something will come to you to fix up the tables (even tho I think they came out beautiful!) if nothing else, just to put your mind at ease. As for the Odie’s Oil kit- I cut my merka merlon pads to 2”x3” little rectangles, then start with two dabs after stirring it up really good- it should be uniform in color and the consistency of honey. And I just use a shop towel to buff it after 30-50 minutes. The more you buff it, the more luxurious it gets! Seriously- only two dabs will do it! Work it into the wood grain squeezing the pad into it- a little really goes a long, long way! And onyx is pronounced ONix- kinda rhymes with phonics. You did good, Ben. The tables are gorgeous!
Thank you for all this feedback. As far as the Odie’s oil goes, I am a huge fan already. I will start cutting up those pads. And thank you for the pronunciation help 😅
Chill out, Ben. The tables look fine! But next time seal the entire top with epoxy before you add the pigmented epoxy. That should prevent the black epoxy getting into the end grain of the cookies. Just remember: Sometimes you win. Sometimes you learn.
