All these other videos talk about jigs, building special set up, measuring on the end of the square leg, etc.... Your method is just simple and works. So glad I came across this.

Great idea Tom! I am constructing a 4 post gazebo roof with a kingpost in the middle. This tip was great for creating a 6x6 Octagonal Kingpost. Now I need a simple trick in figuring out how to measure for a bird's mouth cut for my rafters. There has to be something to make it easier! Thanks again Tom for the tip!

Great tip and video, Tom...thank you! Do you have a simple technique for making a hexagonal post? Thanks again!
@EpicWoodworking
@EpicWoodworking 5 лет назад
Phil Hazlitt Thanks Phil, great question! I don’t have an approach as intuitive as the octagon method, but sure, there has to be a solution. It will most likely involve laying the tablesaw blade over 30 degrees instead of 45 degrees for the octagon. But you would have to begin with a slightly rectangular block...I’ll have to work on this one!! Thanks again, Tom

Hi Tom, I just saw your episode on Tommy McDonald PBS show. I enjoyed it and sought out your RU-vid channel. It seems to be somewhat of a well-kept secret, only 2K followers. I doubt you'll be able to maintain the same anonymity going forward. Nice real-world shop with dust and lumber scraps and everything! I got a little bit too excited for a while there... I'm ok now... whoo... Anyway, I'm going to catch up on the balance of the video library and hope to be an reasonable 'able' maker myself in the coming months. I am really enthusiastic and excited about this new prospect of my life. I'm a maker hobbyist for many years, long before that's what I was called. It was more 'fix it or make it myself because: 1. It didn't exist 2. I can't afford it 3. It's broken, and I s/b able to fix

Peter Norkawich Hi Peter, thanks for the great feedback! My plan is to post more and more videos to RU-vid this year, so hopefully the subscribers numbers will grow along the way as well. If I could only Focus all my time on making projects in front of the camera, rather than also editing video, you would probably see a lot more videos up there right now :) editing is definitely the bottleneck for me. It is really my pleasure to do this work and I love that I'm living at this time when our experiences can be shared so easily. It's so good to know you're out there appreciating what I'm doing! Thanks again, Tom

Is there a comparable trick for cutting hexagonal posts?
@shaver5959

Hi Tom, I love these handy tips. Priceless for a newly retired amateur !!! Just a question, your table saw stop, is that a length of patio tubing down the centre? How do you lock it? it seemed to be free at the camera end so must have been quite firmly locked at your end. Just a photo would do, thanks mate, Stewie.
@EpicWoodworking
@EpicWoodworking 6 лет назад
shaver5959 Thanks Stewie, I’m glad you find them useful! The table saw stop I use is actually a fence that came with the saw when I bought it. Most cabinet saws come with a similar fence when you buy them these days. My saw is 25 years old, and the fence was also available as an add-on, and called a Biesemeyer fence. There are many styles out there now that work similarly. I found this listing on amazon for an aftermarket fence like mine that gives you a better look at it. www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00CUIZNZC/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1508945811&sr=8-1&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_QL65&keywords=biesemeyer+fence&dpPl=1&dpID=41uckUehnQL&ref=plSrch Hope that helps! Tom

Tom, you make it look oh so simple, but when I tried it, it didn't work. I was trying to cut a 1" octagonal. Is 1" too small? Any tips would help. It's a project for my daughter. Thanks for a great video.
@EpicWoodworking
@EpicWoodworking 4 года назад
It would work but the narrower the piece the less flat you have riding on the table after you start the octagon so you have to take care to keep it flat on the table and against the fence. Hope that helps!

Great suggestion. I have since used this to make comfortable grips on my tabke saw sleds. I want to take this another step forward, and before I start, have you attempted to do this for say, a 36 sided length? I am making a barn model. Two silos would be 4" diameter by 12 inch tall, and say, .5 inch flat tiles.
@EpicWoodworking
@EpicWoodworking 4 года назад
Thanks Greg, glad you have found it useful. I’m sorry I haven’t had the need or done the geometry for a more complex faceted surface. I would lay it out on each end of the cylinder. If I only had one or two and they were for a model like the silo idea, I might go the route of turning it first and hand-planing the facets to my layout lines, which isn’t as difficult as it may sound since very little material will be removed to creat each facet. But you might also want to use a technique using a router sled in combination with the indexing head on your lathe. Hope that helps! Thanks, Tom

@@EpicWoodworking Thank you for your reply. That makes two possible ways. : ) for four silos. Me, I will try at li east one go at it. It will be interesting to set the Tilt. Error will be whatever times 32. Building these post and beams at 3/8 scale. 1"=1/32". Barn beams are all assembled and joinery has been pegged.

Could you use this method to cut a tapered octagon?
@EpicWoodworking
@EpicWoodworking 4 года назад
Great question, caused me to burn a few brain cells. But I don’t see how this method could work on a taper. This method as described works with parallel sides. An additional jig of sorts, to hold and position the piece appropriately would be required to run a champher on a taper. My preference in that case is to use the jointer to create the champher on a tapered square like that...a method I use when making pencil post beds. Thanks for watching!
@alanbajpai
@alanbajpai 5 лет назад
Can this be done using a circular saw?
@EpicWoodworking
@EpicWoodworking 5 лет назад
Alanbee No, This technique is designed to move the work across the tablesaw which has a pre-existing fence. Circular saw is designed to hold in your hand and move across the work piece. It would take a few jigs and fixtures to rig up and hold the work piece in place if attempting with a circular saw, defeating the simplicity of this method on a table saw. Hope that helps, thanks for watching! Tom

Oh wait, I misunderstood, you are saying you watched the video of the octagon sawing tip after you hand-planed one...now I get it 😎...at least you got some good planing practice in 👍
