Today we're diving into RPG Developer Bakin, a brand new games engine that's just released to create 2d/3d games in the style of octopath traveler.
In this video we go over beginner steps on setting up and making your first level.

so u may think its boring to go over the basic ui stuff for the software but for newbie people its actually better if u do go over all the ui stuff just to make it easier and if u disagree then stop making tutorials or stop click baiting

Sales will come and go. My advice would be to wait until you understand what you want from the engine. Spend a bit more time in preproduction and get some documentation, concept art, script hopefully after I release a bunch more videos, you'll have a better idea of what you're after.

Good thing is I want to create a game about a story I already wrote, so my script is kind of done, that is at least that (even tho it is clearly not the same pace between a book and a game so there is a lot I need to change) Thanks for the advice ! I will wait and see :)

@@niii5949 Yeah, deffs have a look at the pacing. One big thing you want to try and avoid is just dumping a lot of story and info on the players in 10 minute cutscenes. I've written both traditional stories and game scripts and the mediums are definitely different. Almost treat it like a movie script.

Yes, I have so much things to get rid off and also a lot of stuff I need to develop (for example it took only one sentence to say the characters decided to go somewhere but I can’t just put a scrolling text in game, it’d feel strange). At least, I know where I am going story and lore wise and some dialogues are easier to write ! But yeah, there is still so much to do to adjust those 2 media

The great thing too is that if you've bought DLC for SMILE you can export them from that and use them in Bakin

Spend hours playing around it only to realized the Attribute advantage/disadvantage only works in skills if you put direct values i.e. Skill A does fixed X damage. Anything you put in the formula is not affected by Attribute advantage/disadvantage at all.

I discovered this soft yesterday, seems really intresting. This kind of tutorial is really helpfull. I wonder how easy it is to import our own created assets, especialy the 3D and which kind of maps are useable (PBR, normal, emissive etc). Anyway, i suscribe to your channel for more on this software.

I have not picked up the program yet, but I do have a question: Is one able to make much larger maps for say - "an overworld" or is this not that kind of tool? (think retro RPGs large world.) Thanks

Maybe in the future? (I don't have a corporate contact yet) But if you're still interested in this engine then you should be able to run it on a VM.

Yeah, RPG Maker had a trial version and Bakin is in early access so maybe once they hit full release they will have a trial version?

Does anyone know if you can run this on steamdeck? I don't have a gaming PC, but it it runs I'd consider getting this

Probably don't need a gaming computer for this. Most standard computers should run this. I can imagine it would be a bit complicated to use with a steamdeck as it was optimised for PC.

I would say the possibility is there. Because it's a new engine we're still exploring all of the functionality but c# is pretty good, so we should be able to do something.

Someone who is really familiar with the rpgmaker series (MV,MZ etc) what's the learning curve coming over to bakin in your opinion?

Honest opinion. UI and UX is super scuffed. It's early access so hopefully, they fix that, but workflow processes would be annoying. You have folders in folders in folders in folders in . . . you get the point. If you're working on a project RN, finish that project and have a look at Bakin after that. Maybe after early access is finished and they've made some changes. I'd really only recommend it to people who want this aesthetic of game because it does it quite well.

Hello, very nice video. I used some rpg maker before but I spent 2 hours trying to import personal music in ogg format et with different hz ( trying to do like the other music in the folder) but I couldn't manage to solve it. Do you have any clue?

You should just be able to drag it and drop it into the music file no?

@@LvLUpDesign I tried that many times, with the same music but with different duration, tried to respect even the name format, and the hz 44100 or 48000 but it seems unlike other rpg maker the game doesn't recognize them. Or maybe I do something wrong

@@LvLUpDesign I also tried to put music in both '' bakin sounds folder ''. And the '' project bakin sounds folder'' but still didn't manage to find a way :/ and putting personal music in a game is quiet important for me

Is it possible to use 2d assets for the environment? Or it's only for sprites? I'm not sure if I wanna learn how to 3d for it but man, it looks fun to use TvT

2d assets for the Environment should be fine, you just have to make sure you're good with your camera angles. Although I might consider doing some Blender Tutorials. The 3D for Bakin will be pretty low polygon count so you won't need to be learning super advanced 3d stuff.

After spending about 2 years gathering resources for a gigantic project in MZ, this comes out, and it looks like it does almost everything I was hoping to do from the beginning -- right out of the box. Not quite ready to dump my cash on it though... How are battle animations (like skills and magic) handled -- can we use effekseer animations, or regular spritesheets, etc? I've got a ton of those that I can get away with using in engines other than RPG MAKER, but a big deciding factor is going to be: How much trouble is it going to be to get those working? Or is it even possible? Also hearing that the camera feels like a bit of a mess...

I'll hope to cover all of these throughout my videos. Although if you've been working on your game for 2 years already, my advice would always be to finish your current project in the current engine before thinking about migrating it across. You'd essentially be adding another 2 years to your dev if you did decide to migrate. Camera is ehh compared to other engines sure, but it's early access so hopefully it's something they fix.

@@LvLUpDesign The guy over at Manu Gaming Creations said it uses effekseer files, but they use a shortened file suffix and are slightly different (he just remade one of his animation packs so that both versions are available), and stated that it currently doesn't use sprite sheets at all... Perhaps he was just referring to skill animations, because I've seen at least one other video that was discussing the use of spritesheets within the engine -- which looks WAY more flexible than RPGM's. Regardless, I think I'll give it some time to get the bugs ironed out, and maybe use it for a sequel rather than a reworking of the game I'm currently on... MZ just has too many useful resources that I won't be able to migrate at all.

I wonder how custom made assets are gonna be added into this. Since the world is built in 3D, I'm imagining you're gonna have to fire up a 3D modeling program (like blender) and make those assets from scratch, which is gonna be a whole new can of worms for someone like me who is only limited to making pixel art tilesets through photoshop.

That's super odd. You should be able to go into your map settings and reduce the intensity of the light.

I think unless you know your way around blender, photoshop and aesprite then don't bother with this. If you want to make a little game to share with your friends sure. But if you dream of selling a game you are going to need original assets.

I think the same can be said for most games. You should always aim to make custom assets no matter what engine your using. Default assets should really only ever be placeholder.
