This video demonstrates how I make my gentle Castile soap recipe - my all-time favourite soap to make and to use! Olive oil soap has been made in many parts of the world for centuries, and there's a good reason why. It's the most gentle soap you can use, and there's nothing that matches the feel it gives your skin after bathing. This recipe demonstrates the cold process soap making method used by many home soap makers.
Recipe details
600g olive oil
109g water (this recipe uses 42% lye concentration solution for the lye water solution - this is a very low water soap! If you want to learn more about this, check out this video • Calculating Water in S... )
79g sodium hydroxide (includes 4% superfat)
18g rosemary essential oil (3% of total oil amount in the soap recipe)
METHOD
As per video demonstration
New to soap making? This is important!
Sodium hydroxide and potassium hydroxide (lyes) used in soap making, in granular or flake form or in solution with water/other liquids, as well as raw soap batter, are highly corrosive and require careful and attentive handling and the proper use of personal protective equipment. I know a lot of soap makers like to cut down the time of their videos by speeding up what can be considered redundant or boring processes but when you’re learning how to make soap it’s so valuable to actually see how long it takes so that when you go to do it yourself you’re not second-guessing yourself because you’ve already seen it done through. We're privileged to live on a property repleat with 300 (!) olive trees. In fact, our Extra Virgin Olive Oil just grabbed a Silver in the Western Australia Olive Awards. We don't run the farm commercially, just enjoy the benefits for our own use - which now includes 12 gorgeous little bars of ready to use Castile soap. It traced really quickly, I'm thinking because the oil was so fresh and super high quality - it's been a shade over 2 months and I've started using the bars. They lather perfectly and I love the clean feeling without dryness or any residual fragrance. This was such a fun activity and because of your teaching I'm confident to try different varieties! Thanks Elly!

What a straightforward video, easy to follow! Gave me the confidence to make my first batch of Castile soap yesterday. :) I followed measurements precisely and it did get to a slightly heavier trace than shown here. About 18 hours later it has not thickened up much at all and I'm a little nervous. It is extremely humid where I live and raining outside when I made the soap... do I just need to be more patient? I did another batch last week that had a mix of oils and it took 3-4 days to harden enough to unmold. Thanks to any soapers reading that might advise!

The first thing that came to mind while watching you was, this would make a great infant soap, the fact that it doesn't lather too much would keep babies from slipping, which was my worst nightmare as a first time mom.. waaaaay back in the day 🙄... adding a bit of gentle rose petals or perhaps chamomile tea could give it a nice scent for precious babies? Thanks for sharing... the simplicity of your soap makes it very beautiful to me. 🤗

Hi there, thanks so much for your comment. I love the simplicity of this soap too. Unfortunately this soap, regardless of the lathering, is still very slippery, so you'd have to watch out for that with babies. And yes, some rose petals or chamomile would be lovely additions. Thanks again.

Thanks for including the % and superfat here too! I've made your recipe and it is the best one I have (and I have several soap making books!) I use gardenia fragrance oil, which has been most of my friend and family's favorite. It is from Brambleberry and does accelerate trace, which is ok with a castille. That's so wonderful Sharyn! Very happy for you. I'm not exactly sure what you mean by coloured glycerin soap, but did you know that all handmade soaps are very high in glycerin? It's not taken out as it is with factory made soaps - which is why they're a bit softer and gentle on the skin.

@@EllysEverydaySoapMaking I can be very confusing at times Elly, especially when I don't know what I am talking about. I mean a clear translucent soap. My family think I am a professional now and the requests are starting to roll in... LOL. My daughter-in-law sent me a link to a person that makes and sells it however, she does not divulge her recipes. I originally had a little business selling all natural products with my labels etc. (Elandra All Naturals), until I realised that I could not compete with the big guys. I was buying my ready made products from a big company in Adelaide, as was hundreds of other bigger businesses. I soon found out that unless you can afford the packaging and marketing you don't stand a chance, and of course none of the products were unique. So now I am learning to make my own. I have watched hundreds of tutorials, made some good, and not so good cosmetics and skin care products (which I absolutely love doing) then I spotted the diy soap!!! Loving it! Your tutorials are so clear and easy to understand, thank you. Oh! By the way I may give your Sour Dough Bread a try.....been thinking about, we love it. Have a great day Elly, I am about to spend the next hour or so going through all your earlier videos.

Thank you Sharyn, I know what you mean now about the glycerin soap - I don't know how that can be made with home made processes and ingredients like oil and caustic soda. Most of the people I know who have made it use melt and pour soap base that they buy from a supplier and then melt down, colour, add scent etc. Not really hand made! I'm glad you're enjoying my soap videos, and now the bread ones too! Making your own healthy bread is just as awesome as making your own soap :)

Sharyn Campbell a late response, but I just discovered this channel. I have made clear soap in the past, but it was quite labour-intensive relative to regular CP soap. I don’t know if you’re an experienced soap maker or not, but if not I recommend really becoming a minor expert in cp before trying transparent soap. A good book to start with is Catherine Failor’s “Making Transparent Soap”. HTH.

Thank you for your time to make such a video ❤️ I made this as my first batch of soap ever and didn't use any oils aside from olive oil, as this was my first batch I didn't understand tracing exactly 😂 I was so scared that what I had at first is false trace that I heard about so I kept blending, I ended up with a really thick trace in the end, that's when I realised I blended too much maybe 🤔 I don't know 😂 it was fun nonetheless. Only downside is because the soap was thick, after taking it out of the mold there was some air and unfilled pockets lol.

Hello Elly! Wonderful video. I've got a question for you: I'm Spanish, and here (where this soap comes from, it's a very old tradition for our grandmas to make it in humongous batches!) they wrap every soap in paper and let it sit for a month in a dry place. For this formula, how do you store the soaps to dry? Do you also wrap them or just leave them like that in the open somewhere safe? Thank you a lot. I love your channel and I'm constantly learning from you!

Hi, great tutorial thank you :) I’m wondering , do you only use your utensils for soap making? Or do you wash them up and use them for food also? I’m just wondering if I need to go and buy the utensils and keep only for soap making. Also, can I add coconut oil as well as the olive oil? Do you measure your ingredients with scales?Cheers in advance 😀
@EllysEverydaySoapMaking
@EllysEverydaySoapMaking 4 года назад
Hi, thanks for your questions :) I do have a set of utensils that I keep for soap making, but you can use the same ones for cooking, as long as you get all the soap off them! If you want to buy a second set, charity shops are a good option. You can make a soap with coconut and olive oil (this one here has those two oils ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Kc7duzDEa6Y.html) but for this recipe, it would need to be recalculated if you wanted to make any changes to it. I have a video that shows how to calculte your own recipes if you are intrested in that as well ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-AqKxin0q1bM.html. Thirdly, yes, I definitely weigh all of my ingredients with a scale. Soap making has to be precise in order to be safe. You may want to check out this introductory video too, where I mention soap safety ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-8bKpLWNqAGs.html

Is it better to go with a very light trace or a thicker one? What do you think? UK
@EllysEverydaySoapMaking
@EllysEverydaySoapMaking 5 лет назад
It depends. A thin trace is fine, but some people feel more confident if they get their soap to a thicker trace than I achieved here. A thin trace is great if you plan to do swirls and other things such as in this video ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-g5iny6MZ3S4.html If your soap gets too thick it can be hard to work with. Hi, Elly! Not sure if you still follow fresh comments on this video. I followed your recipe but the end result were my soaps formed some sort of curdling right at the surface after being in the mould for 48 hours. The soap facing inside the mould, however, came out perfect. How do I get my Castile soaps to be smooth on both sides? Right after pouring, I immediately covered it with another cardboard and wrapped them in towels. I’m based in Malaysia and our weather is quite similar. Humid-hot most of the times. Aside from the aesthetics of the soap, it cured just fine. Hope you see this and thank you so much for existing!

The ingredients amounts are all listed in the video description. The essential oil scent does fade a bit, but generally it lasts enough for the soap to retain it's scent. It depends on the essential oils you use too. Some fade, some last better. Citrus (especially lemon, lime and grapefruit) always fade.

Dear Elly, first of all thank you very much for your great videos. They are so helpful. And please excuse my English, I'm writing to you from Germany. I have a question for you. It's the first time I made soap and I tried different types of receipes. They are now curing 3 and a half weeks. Today I went to look at them and they have small white points in them (I think mostly on top). I tried them with my tongue and they taste strange, like baking soda. Then I cut the soap in half and tried the same thing, but this time it doesn't taste strange. So my questions are: do you know what is happening? Can I use the soap (I mean I will wait more weeks of course, the curing time hasn't passed already) or is it bad soap? And if I have to throw it away, do you maybe know, why this happend? Hope you can help me. :)
@EllysEverydaySoapMaking
@EllysEverydaySoapMaking 5 лет назад
Hi Teresa, I'll try my best to help you! The white spots could be a couple of things, they could be what's known as 'stearic spots' which happens when particular oils are used. They shouldn't be harmful to the soap. The other thing it could be is 'soda ash' which is also not harmful. But it's hard to tell without knowing your recipe. The soap is actually chemically cured within a couple of days, the longer 'cure time' which most people refer to is actually drying time. The spots are not likely to go away with any more time. Can you get some pH test strips to check for sure that your soap is safe to use? It is soap after all, so it won't taste good, but did zap on your tongue at all? The zap test is a good basic way to tell if the pH is too high, which is your main concern. I have a feeling that your soap is ok and the issues are purely cosmetic, but again, I can't tell without knowing more. If you do some more research on 'stearic spots' and 'soda ash' for cold process soap you may get some good, helpful information. I hope that helps! And your English is excellent, by the way :)
@teresasstampingwelt2729
@teresasstampingwelt2729 5 лет назад
