Just wanted to update after I tried it. This works really well! I used 631 Oracal (it's what I had), heat n 'bond ultra (same as you suggested) but instead of tulle, I ordered some 110 silkscreen mesh. I also don't own a heat-set press so I used my regular clothing iron (with something in between the iron plate and the stencil so I didn't get my iron plate gunked up). The first time I ironed TOO long and my wax paper stuck to the top of the mesh and "melted" and it wasn't salvageable because the wax paper literally melted onto the mesh. Second time, ironed on a lower setting and it worked perfectly! I've used the stencil twice so far and it's worked well both times. I rinsed with water, let it dry and it was still sticky. BTW.. I own a Silhouette Cameo and found that the cutting on my mat using a brand new regular cutting blade and the Cut Heat Transfer, Metallic Setting (Blade 3, Force 33, Speed 5, Single-pass) worked really well. Cut through the layers of vinyl and adhered heat n bond but not trough the back of the peel-off paper backing of the vinyl. I was able to weed easily. Thanks so much for this tutorial. Thank you so much for the tutorial! I used adhesive vinyl/generic contac paper, from dollar general and and old sheer curtain! Swiped my paint on in one direction (cross grain or brush Mark's on wood) and it worked great! First time I swiped with and across the grain and remembered silk screening in grade school and teacher stressed to swipe either up/down or across. This helps tremendously for paint bleeding underneath! I did have a bit of a problem for depth of settings but I believe its because the contact paper is thinner than regular vinyl so I'll have to lighten up the settings! Also tested the restickability, haha not sure if that's a word, and so far 7 times and still sticky! Thanks again. Great explanation!

Wow, thank you. I would like to do chalk couture, but it is expensive, so I was just looking at how I could make my own. I watched your video, first, because it was short. I really like that you get to the point. I see you haven't made any new videos, but they all look like they will help me, so I subbed.

Just added you and love the video. Exactly what I was trying to figure out how to do.

I have seen this and it inspired me to test different materials. I have used htv vinyl and silk screen mesh and used this method just with the htv. Works great. I just tape the htv down to surface and comes up with a clean image. A little thinner than 631. I have used 632 in top and bottom of mesh and find the htv does better. Any 631 stencils I have made have pulled up wood particles, even if "fuzzed" up. Great tutorial! Thanks for the inspiration!

Hi, I made my first reusable screen design today after watching your video !! I used polyester curtaining instead of tulle. I am very happy with it, my first design was to detailed but my second attempt using a simpler design worked. Thank you very much

OMG! You have changed my life. I was just sitting here cussing myself for buying this Chalk ink crap. Not really thinking about the whole mesh in the stencil until I tried to do it on a coffee cup with straight up stencil only. It was a MESS!!!! (Thankfully if removed in a timely manner it comes off the cup - Thank you Jesus!) So now, back to being super excited...I am going to try this to make coffee cup stencils.GAME CHANGER! THANK YOU!

If they lose the stickiness, just spritz it with some spray adhesive (non permanent). I had been doing this with iron on and ironing it onto the silk screen I get on Amazon, but I think this way is better. I can’t wait to give it a try.

Thanks so much for this. I recently became intrigued with Chalk couture after not being successful with traditional stencil methods. I like for my projects to look like more than a piece of vinyl slapped on them. LOL> Worked great except my wax paper stuck to the vinyl too. Was able to soak in water and gently scrub to make usable. Will reduce heat and time next go around. So excited to try them out.

Darn now I want an ez press. Wish I had seen this before labouring over making a traditional silk screen and the huge mess of struggling to apply the stencil to a large mixed media artwork. I wasn't sure if I wanted an ez press. Now I def. do! I have traditional screen mesh so I'll use that.

Editing at top. To note its better to use parchment paper not wax paper. Made to go in ovens, no wax residue. I missed that the 631 vinyl is removable! Thats interesting. In future I may buy that to do my hand cut methods. That Ive not tried yet! But adding best methods of all you crafters together may help me do a better poor womans methods. Tulle is great idea to test but may by silk screen mesh. You know I did the very old fashioned method of silk screen in the 70s! Im old but still creating! Im glad there is a lot of self creativity out there now and helpful people on the www! Thanks again! ok late to comment. I find this interesting. Im old, old school, cant afford any gadgets. I have to rewatch this, confused how it was made sticky? But more so like the idea of the mesh method.I bought thin portifolio folders to cut my own and a cheap wood burning tool with a hot knife tip. Thats how many are cutting theirs by laying over an image they want to turn into a stencil. So Ive been looking up many things. Including how to make my own self stick adhesive. I had some spray on few days ago at Walmart but had to run to restroom and a clerk took basket and cleaned it all out! They looked in back but never found the spray again and last one!! But another person I follow I just watched her make stencil material by laminating a pouch with nothing in it. My $5 thrift store laminator broke so Ive just been ironing. Not the same but I got idea to use a thing my partners son gave us. Those copper mats you use to cook fish on a grill. "As seen on tv" kind of item. Ive been using to help laminate with my iron and I also press and dry flowers. Helps with that. But use parchment paper instead of wax paper. It holds up to heat as its used to make cookies on and has no wax...unless you want the wax? Ok, reviewingt his again. Oh I sew, so I do have many types bondable interfacing which heat and bond is. Ok rewatching later to see if I can put his all together for Poor womens stencils! Thanks so much. I will see what other videos you have!

Hi, I just attempted to make two (on the same sheet) and it was a bloody disaster lol. I used permanent Avery Denison sign vinyl (that I use in my Cricut maker no problems) I bought the super adhesive sure and bond I put the rough side on top of the vinyl and pressed and that was fine, waited for it to cool, then put it through the maker and cut the design. Weeded negative space then got some 110 silkscreen mesh and heat pressed it on top of the design where the adhesive could be seen on top of vinyl and it was sticky looking after being pressed. I pressed a bit longer but was still a bit sticky looking. Cut the two stencils in half and put both onto glasses, the vinyl actually came off onto the glass where the inside of letters was like the circle inside the d, e etc and applied the couture ink and it didn't cover properly and very poorly so I had to completely wipe off and clean the glass. Don't know what I did wrong.

Thanks so much for your tutorial. I had all the parts but couldn't put it together. I made my first stencil and love the results. I would use a real heat press. With the cricut press it moves to much which puts the adhesive on the screen. Thanks again !

Hello! I loved your tutorial! Such an easy way to make these reusable stencils! What kind of paint do you use when actually printing the image? I tried using speedball ink, but it bled through my letters and my lines were not crisp at all! Maybe I am using the wrong paint? Any adivce?

I haven't tried this yet. But for anyone having issues with waxed paper, I recommend using parchment paper instead. It is made for use with heat, wax paper isn't.

I realize I would not know what temperature it will be set at. 2. Is there a particular type of tulle that you use? Something fine? Can you make henna tattoo stencils thats adhesive to skin using this technique?

Just made my first stencil and of course instead of trying a small design first, I jumped right in and made one that was 9.5x9.5. First of, it seemed like the heat n bond had air bubles after pressing it on my Oracal 651. I did not re-do it because I wanted to see what would happen just using it the way it was. I cut my design, weeded it and pressed silk screen material on it. I guess I should have waited a few seconds for it to cool because I had glue residue on the unweeded part of my stencil. Mind you, my heatpress is 10x10 9 (non Cricut brand) and so I had to overlap the press. Next time I will try and press everything on my big t-shirt press. Maybe the overlapping caused the glue to bleed. I also see some "shadows" in some of my letters; not sure what the cause of this is. I also may have used too much pressure on my weeding tool tip when removing the vinyl because I pricked a few of the letters (still fairly new to the Cricut world). Because I have not applied to stencil on the shirt yet, I do not know if this is visible after adding the color. All in all, a very easy process now I just have to work out the kinks. Thanks for a great tutorial!! :)

Hi just came across your channel. Can you use regular contact adhesive.? In Australia it's hard to get the vinyl you use. Or it's very expensive.

How did these turn out as far as reusability??? Does ironing onto the surface of the 631 affect the stickiness of the vinyl in the bottom towards your project??
