How to make Coad (aka shoemakers hand wax, or white wax)

When we’re sewing leather (e.g. making shoes), rather than waxing the thread we use coad. Medieval coad was a black wax likely made with pine pitch, rosin and beeswax. Coad is used instead of just wax because the rosin and pitch act as a glue to seal our stitches in place and stopping the thread from rotting, while the wax keeps the coad malleable and lubricates the thread so it can be pulled through the stitch holes. This video shows how to make coad using a more modern white wax recipe. We use this instead of black wax because it’s hard to get good pitch, and white wax is much less messy when sewing at home!

This looks easy enough and well explained enough for me to actually have a go at. Thank's Hugh! Great video.

Thanks so much for this video. Going to try this out for hand sewing horse tack. I've heard there are summer and winter recipes for coad. Maybe I don't need this since my workshop is in a basement that is heated/air conditioned.

This wasn’t quite what I was looking for, but I ended up watching anyway. Haha. This is a really easy to understand video that has me wondering if I could use this for a different project. I also really appreciate the ‘pro-tips’ haha. Have a good one!

Also try and get some of your friends who actively like your stuff to get a comment or two in as soon as a video is published. I know that's what you did with me so you probably did it with others but try again. For all those out there watching Hugh's videos it doesn't take much to like comment and SHARE. Sharing is caring because more people will get to see his stuff and the algorithm really pays attention when people share.

Love the humour love the film work. Not sure what editing software you are using but I'd take the backing track down at least another 5db. Often the you tube processing software boosts the volume of the music so you often need to have it softer than you think it needs to be in editing.

Can confirm hot rosin is hot. I thought everyone had a favourite hammer.

Hi! I got hold of pure pine pitch last weekend and tried to add a teaspoon of pitch to my traditional recipe. Arter fully liquidized, I added all into water and started taffy pulling. It turned out very sticky. Any idea how I can make the wax a bit harder and less sticky?

Any possibility you might do the same for black coad?

Can anybody put a link, where to buy tallow please.

Hi, we bought our tallow from a local leather tannery. They don't sell it retail but we asked, and they were happy to fill up a tub for us out of their huge drum and name us a price. It is increasingly available from health stores, but at a much higher price.
