Disclaimer
Although my cold process soap making tutorials are of a tutorial nature, they are intended for people who have a good understanding of making cold process soap. The information given is based on what works for me, however, there are lots of variables associated with cold process soap making and I therefore, take no responsibility for the results achieved when using the techniques or methods explained in these tutorials. Cold process soap involves the necessary use of sodium Hydroxide (lye) which is a very dangerous substance. Before attempting and cold process soap making you should ensure you are fully aware of the lye safety procedures and always wear the correct safety equipment when making soap.

You are amazing!! Do you or anyone else know how to rebatch soap... I used way too much fragrance oil and it is very soft. I tripled a recipe and instead of putting it in a calculator I tripled what the recipe had for FO. I believe it was way too much. I know 6% of oils recommended or .7 per pound I believe. The original recipe was 16 oz of oil with 2.5 oz of FO. This was a brambleberry recipe. So again I tripled it which meant I tripled FO so 48 oz oil with 7.5 oz FO. Hindsight I knew too much FO but lapse in judgements. I guess if original had 2.5 should it have been ok to triple? I'm confused. Will too much fragrance hurt? Thanks

The soap is realy beautiful and great idea! I was wondering whether you could have also used coulored clay instead of micas to match the natural tea. By the way: it is so so sad that there are problems shipping to europe / the EU right now.
@IDreamInSoap
@IDreamInSoap 2 года назад
Hi Jona, yes I could have used clays, I use them quite a lot, however it's tricky to get the colours I wanted with them, especially against the power of the tea. I was thinking about making this a natural soap, but decided I wanted a rose fragrance. Rose essential oil is hugely expensive and it would have made the bars quite costly, so I decided on a fragrance oil, so at that point as the soap wouldn't be one in my natural range I added micas. Normally when I add an extra ingredient like tea, aloe vera, oat milk etc I make those soaps as natural soaps, so I thought it would be nice to offer and 'alternative' ingredient soap in my 'not natural' soaps.

@IDreamInSoap
@IDreamInSoap 5 месяцев назад
I have sugar in all my soaps, it increases lather :-)
@coypeahen
@coypeahen 2 года назад
Hi Lisa. When you add the lye to a sugar rich liquid, however slow and gradual the incorporation is, it still scorches some content of the liquid. I feel that this negates the intended skin benefit of the liquid. Don’t u think? I always prefer to add my non water liquids to my oils. Even though it is then, a minuscule amount.
@IDreamInSoap
@IDreamInSoap 2 года назад
If you freeze the liquid and add slowly it shouldn't scorch. Also bear in mind with soap it's very unlikely that many of the 'benefits' of an ingredient will have an effect on the skin. Firstly due to the hostile environment that soap has to go through to saponify and secondly that it's a wash off product, so will have minimal skin contact.

What’s about adding the tea leaves 🍃 into the lye water? They can boil for a little as one time instead of cooling them in fridge
@IDreamInSoap
@IDreamInSoap Год назад
Hey Sami, you could do that, but there would be issues, the lye water will not get to boiling point. Also you would have to strain them out. Straining lye is tricky, firstly because you don't want to be getting lye water everywhere as you do the straining, also as you strain the tea out you will lose some of the lye water, this in turn would reduce the amount of lye you have in your soap and could result in your soap not setting properly or having a higher superfat than you want. I'm not sure how much extra you would need to add to compensate for the loss of the lye solution, so overall probably easier to just brew the tea seperately.

Lisa, how do the assessments work? We don't require them here in South Carolina.😉
@katelillo1932
@katelillo1932 2 года назад
I’m not Lisa but I think I can answer this question 🙋‍♀️ in the UK, soap makers must submit their soap recipes for approval by the government (consumer safety something or other?), listing every ingredient down to the the gram, including colorant, fragrance, oils, clays, teas, etc. The recipe is evaluated by a chemist and approved (for a fee, of course), at which point she can sell any soap following that recipe. The design is not part of the assessment, so she can use the same recipe to make any design she wants as long as she includes all the ingredients listed on the approved recipe (because they also don’t permit you to omit anything - they want you to pay for a separate assessment if you leave something out!). For those of us in the States, it seems crazy complicated 😧 we can sell pretty much anything, as long as it isn’t burning someone’s skin off 🙈
@IDreamInSoap
@IDreamInSoap 2 года назад
Oh gosh it's quite a lot to explain, but basically if we want to sell soap we have to get the exact recipe assessed by a cosmetic chemist and get a safety report done on it. The assessment includes everything that's in the recipe. Once that's done you can make and sell soap using that exact recipe and cannot change a thing, so for example in this one I've had to say exactly what the oils are and the %s the fragrance oil, the micas, how much tea, how much water, even down to what they will be packaged in when they're sold. When that's certified I can sell soap using that recipe, if I want to change even one tiny thing, so maybe I decided I wanted to use a but more TD or swap one of the micas I would have to pay to get the 'new' formula assessed all over again.

Distilled water is water that has been vaporised ( steam ) and then coolEd to become liquid . Deionised water has no mineral salts but might have traces of the resins used to deionise the water or traces of organic matter. Both are probably ok for soap . They are not really ok for drinking on a daily basis as your body needs the minerals .

Thanks so much. Unfortunately I do not give out my recipe as in the UK we have to invest a lot of money to get our recipes just how we want them, then we have to pay for a cosmetic chemist to test and approve them and issue cosmetic product safety reports, this is all a large investment and leaves us with a recipe that we have to use in our products and cannot change, therefore because of these factors I cannot afford to just give it away free of charge

You mention the allowed percentages of fragrance in soap. I've recently bought some fragrances from the Soap Kitchen, and the permitted levels are 86.5% and 100% respectively. I'm probably being a bit thick but I don't really understand what that means. Please can you clarify for me.
@IDreamInSoap
@IDreamInSoap 2 года назад
Of course, when you buy a fragrance it will have all sorts of limits depending on what you are using it it, these are set by an international body and are purely to do with safety, they do not consider your actual recipe. Each fragrance with have an IFRA certificate, for soap you need to look for category 9. That will tell you the maximum safe limit according to the IFRA. However that doesn't actually take account of your recipe, so if for example you have a fragrance in category 9 with a limit of 100% they're basically saying no matter how much you use it is deemed safe (maybe it's an allergen free fragrance) however, you would never use that much as 100% would just be a puddle of fragrance oil and not soap at all. The main thing that you need to consider are the UK / EU cosmetic regulations that apply to all soap that you sell (or hope to sell). They must pass a cosmetic safety assessment and have a cosmetic safety report, for that to happen you cannot use any fragrance or essential oil above 3% in your soap any more and the soap won't get safety approved and would be illegal to sell (or even give away). So the usage limits you see on a fragrance typically need to be 'ignored' UNLESS they are lower than 3%, so for example your fragrance at 86.5% you can only use 3%, however if you have a fragrance that has an IFRA limit below 3% you cannot exceed that, so for example if you had a fragrance with an IFRA limit of 2.5%, even though cosmetic rules say max 3% that's subject to that amount being allowed by IFRA, so in this case you would use a maximum of 2.5%. I hope this helps :-)
