Thank you for an interesting and informative video. A quick point on woodworking terminology: When you used water to "pop the grain", you were "raising the grain". The only reason I mention this is because the terms "raise the grain" and "pop the grain" have commonly understood woodworking meanings. Raising the grain is a term that means using water (or a water based finish) to get the wood fibers to stand up so it can be sanded smooth (or, in this case, cut off on the CNC with a very light final pass). Popping the grain means using an oil finish to get the grain to 'pop' visually. It allows the wood to show off to its full visual potential. (A good example of this can be seen at the end of the video with the Walrus Oil is applied. It transformed the look of the cherry -- the grain popped!

Just curious, why couldn’t you cut the text first, a little deeper than usual, and then run the flattening pass after the epoxy is hardened? That way you don’t have to worry about getting the tool at the right hight or sanding to level, just sanding it to a smooth finish once done
@bahlowme
@bahlowme 2 года назад
I thought the same thing.
@jasonasselin8657
@jasonasselin8657 2 года назад
So that you can seal the engraving. Coloured epoxy likes to bleed into the grain where you dont want it to go and can ruin the crispness of the text. Ideally a rough flattening, then text, seal, pour, then full flattening.
@ibeauf
@ibeauf 2 года назад
@@jasonasselin8657 Ok that makes sense, in that case could you cut the text deep, seal it, blue epoxy, 1 flattening pass and 1 sanding pass and done? This would bypass the z axis offset and extra sanding on the letters

So for the next it would be better to use a 0.1 offset during the last profile passes and then one last single full depth cut to remove the 0.1 offset and all the lines with it for that perfect finish.
@isaacsgarage931
@isaacsgarage931 2 года назад
For Z offsets, I use a precision 123 block. Really quick and super repeatable. I drop the tool below the 123 block and move it up until I cannot feel the tool while moving the block, then back down .001". From there is easy to tell I'm 1" above my work(or WCS) and I can offset a couple thou if needed in a controlled way. Highly recommend over the paper method.

Nice job. Question, what is the pigment brand your using?? Just a quick tech tip. Rather than removing the 2nd piece of tape then having to rezero your machine and taking these extra steps just hit go to zero, then command Z-.005 OR ??? and then zero the Z axis. Just a little quicker and a bit more accurate.IMO but still great job.

Thanks so much for the kind words. Yes, there is an offset feature, so I measure all tools off the touch off probe, then measure tool 1 off of the material and it sets the z-zero position for all of the other bits automatically as it knows the difference in length between each bit.
