HOW TO MAKE DRAGON EGGS

For an egg like this, you'll need:
A piece of cardboard
Opaque nail polish
Glitter nail polish (optional)
Clear top coat polish
A medium styrofoam egg shape
400+ Metal thumb tacks (drawing pins, push pins)
A craft knife
A bowl
Nail polish remover

Have you ever tried using gel nail polish would that possibly stay on the tacs better or would that allow you to use a different kind of Chamaeleon powders more easily?

Perler Angel I’ve never tried gel nail polish! Because you often need so much polish for a single egg, I stick to polishes that are around $2 a bottle and I haven’t found a gel I like in that price range. But if you try it and like the results, let me know!

How many thumbtacks did it take to make your medium sized egg?

Michelle Brittingham it’s been a few years, but from memory I think this one took just a little more than 400 thumbtacks. Every single egg I’ve done is slightly different but it’s best to paint a few more than you think you’ll need. If I end up with spare painted tacks, I keep them in a container and eventually make another multi-coloured egg with all the leftovers

Hey can you make a rainbow egg and show it btw nail polish works if you do : color, same color but lighter with glitter, then clear. That is great idea! Btw I love these and can you show it to us 😅

What size egg in inches is a medium like you used in the video?

I’ve searched high and low and can’t actually find this egg after moving house, unfortunately! But I think the largest eggs I use are about 100mm so I would hazard a guess that these are about 75mm or a little under 3 inches if I’m converting it correctly

Where do you get your styrofoam base? Hobby lobby had a pack of 6 for $4 but that's seems a little pricey and they aren't the solid white, they're the clear plastic ones.

Jay Falgout Not sure where you’re located but since I’m not familiar with Hobby Lobby I’m going to assume you’re not in Australia? I got mine from Spotlight, which is a chain of craft stores here. I think someone once told me they got their eggs from Michaels (?) in the US and other people have said they found some on Amazon/eBay. Hope that helps!

Hmm ok. Also I'm super struggling to get my rows to look even and pretty lol could you post like a 30s quick video of how you do yours? I've made 2 so far and neither one look...great lol...

Jay Falgout This video shows how I do my rows - they look a bit messy when I first start but tend to even out towards the top of the egg. All of my eggs look a little different and some do look “neater” than others. The only other thing I can recommend is to keep the overlap of the tacks as tight as possible. That might help make it look a bit more uniform if that’s what you’re hoping for.

Okay, it's the very top I'm having troubles with. You can easily see the stem of the thumb tacks on occasion and I haven't figured out how to not make that happen :(

Jay Falgout it might be that it’s getting a little crowded in the styrofoam so the tacks won’t push down all the way. Sometimes I pop the stems in at a slight angle so they can find a free spot
