How To Make Easy Thread Chaser Tool To Fix Damaged Threads

I show how to make a cheap, easy, homemade DIY thread chasing tool and repair moderately damaged threads. In this case it was a bike frame bottle cage mount. But the method can be used for other threaded spots as well. I could have used a tap, but a tap will cut threads and remove metal potentially make the mount loose. A thread chase tool chases or follows the existing threads, cleaning out debris and reforming damaged threads.

This saved me on a 2500 dollar Hydraulic Control Unit on my car ... bolt hole threads were mangled and this DIY thread chaser lined them up again ...I cannot express how greatful I am for you making this video

I discovered damaged threads on one of the throttle bodies on my motorcycle. The screw is an M5-0.8. I purchased a tap, but I was concerned about taking more threads or getting it threaded properly. I looked for a thread chase, but they don't appear to go down to M5. This was perfect! I purchased a couple of bolts and nuts. They cost less than the tap that I purchased earlier. I used a nut to confirm that the threads had not been messed up after I made the cuts. I then confirmed that the bolt easily threaded into another hole before trying it in the hole with the bad threads. With some oil on the threads, I slowly threaded it in and it worked. I used the short side of the Allen key to keep torque applied low. No aggressive tap and no expensive handle. Thanks!

You can also put a little axle grease or petroleum jelly in the slots to catch any debris that's pushed out of the threads.

Great idea! I have tried to chase threads with a whole screw or bolt, but cutting slots should make it work a lot better.

Thanks so much for this video! I've had this same problem with my bike, and the local bike shop gave me a shorter screw and said "deal with it." Now I need to run out and find a tool I can use to cut with.

nice this was a problem that i had. unfortunately i dont have access to these tools. what size thread chaser would i need for the vintage 1992 koga miyata bike in your "turn fixie bike back to geared bike" tutorial? also it would be extremely helpful if you wrote the tools you used in each video in the description box in the video. just a suggestion. thanks for the videos.

Do you perhaps have any ideas for a 'home-made' crank arm thread chaser. The appropriate tool Bicycle Research TC-8 is much too expensive.

@RJTheBikeGuy 7 лет назад
I have a TC-8 myself. You could buy a cheap crank puller and do what I did in the video to the threaded part.

Maybe a dumb question, but does this work the other way around? What I mean by that is, could one repair threads on f.ex. a screw using a nut with cut slots inside of it?

could the same thing be applied to a small engine iv just purchased a used snow blower and discovered I cant thread the spark plug I could Dremel out and old spark plug to make the chaser do you think that would work

I can't tell you. This only cleans out threads, and does minor repair to slightly damaged threads.

Cool! I ask cause my sister just got a key ring of that same design from a US bike shorts manufacturer. Probably one of those generic things companies put their logo on. Still kinda neat.

This works best if your bolt is harder than material your trying to chase like aluminum bike frame. The reason why thread chasers are harden.

I have a Merlin titanium frame that was in a garage fire and the bottom bracket aluminum parts melted. That's how hot it got. Do you think it's safe to make a fixed gear "fun bike" out of it?

The titanium skin of the SR-71 was just south of 1000F, aluminum melts at what, 12-1300F? Even though it's hard to tell the temperature of the fire, I'ld be more concerned about the cooling down process. Was it tempered to the point of becoming brittle?

I just keep stumbling onto your McGyver Videos. Tradesmen, bike shops, auto mechanics etc must hate you. You're taking away their lively hood. This is really useful (as well as all your videos). Seriously, how do you come up with all this? I used to pride myself in being a DYI-er/McGyver but you got me beat. Thanks :)

He simply made a tap. Great idea for those who don't have taps or don't want to spend the money...but should not have said that he did not want to use a tap because of metal removal. The slits in his tap screw allow for metal shavings to be removed. Same as a tap.
@RJTheBikeGuy
@RJTheBikeGuy 5 лет назад
It's not a tap. A tap is hardened steel with a ground edge made for cutting. This is not hardened steel. It has a channel. It will scrape debris out of the threads. It won't cut new threads. At most, it may break off loose parts of damaged threads, or realign them. It is a chaser, not a tap.
@sghost128
@sghost128 7 лет назад
technically speaking what you made is a tap. if you just use a tap of the same size it will work exactly the same.
@JH-tk6ge
@JH-tk6ge 4 года назад
I think not. Taps cut threads, chasers clean and reform threads gently. Although, I have heard that people have grinded taps down a bit to perform more like a chaser.
@napper1496
@napper1496 3 года назад
@@JH-tk6ge how do you think that happens lol. It cuts the thread
@guitarpro594
@guitarpro594 3 года назад
What he made is a thread chaser. There is a specific difference. Chasing threads you can use a bolt like he did cut in the bolt/screw so there is space for debris to exit. Chasing threads helps remove debris stuck in the threaded area. It does NOT make new threads. A tap will make new threads. Big difference
@bryanhauschild4376
@bryanhauschild4376 2 года назад
As a mechanic your better off using a tap. The screw shouldn’t be loose after the tap if your using proper hardware. If it’s from China you never know what your getting.
@DanielSantos-rf6zw
@DanielSantos-rf6zw 7 лет назад
One of the oldest sayings in any shop is, "use the right tool for the job." Get your cheap ass to the hardware store and buy a tap the correct size.
@RJTheBikeGuy

@robinvincent1279

A tap might remove too much metal, leaving the screw too loose!
@drooghead
@drooghead 4 года назад
You just made a tap.
@RJTheBikeGuy
@RJTheBikeGuy 4 года назад
No. A tap is hardened steel that CUTS threads. This does not cut threads. It just cleans them out, maybe reforms damaged threads.
