So you put out a video helping everyone and take your time to do this and you get a thumbs down in the first 20 mins... No matter what you do the haters will hate... just crazy!
Brad you could do a video of anything and we would watch it. The passion and happiness it gives you is apparent from the first 10 seconds. My sons and I love watching your videos, keep them coming!
Thank you for the video! We started our channel 2 years ago when we purchased our Jeep. “Video scrapbooking” is what I call my motivation for making the vids and it’s been so rewarding. So far it’s been a $0 budget... IPhone camera and free editing software. Small channel, but I’m proud of it. Thanks again! MontanaFamilyTrails.
OK....you forced me to do it, I went back and watched a couple vids of yours from 4 years ago. I'd say your 'self-training' has been miraculous. Goes to show what tenacity and striving for improvement can lead to.
Are we going to ignore the fact that when he said, "first there's some prep-work that needs to be done back home" and the first thing you see Brad do is take a sip of coffee! Great vid, you covered EVERYTHING I was curious about!
These are very important tips! It is important to remember that you can make spectacular adventure films without expensive equipment. We started our filming our trips with a $80 Sony camcorder, very little experience, but great ideas, inspiration, and enthusiasm. I think some of the videos with the $80 camera still beat newer videos with the $800 camera. Sophisticated equipment only supplements what at the foundation needs to be a planned, thought out, crafted production. You could have top of the line camera equipment and not keep the vehicles in frame, or have no continuity between clips.
Every aspect of your profession (because this is what you do to make money) deserves compliments. The clear and succinct commentary, the variety of perspectives, the care about the things and people around you, and the appreciation of the people that watches your shows.
You are literally the channel with the highest filming quality on RU-vid I feel and the fact that you are showing us how it is done is really appreciated
Been watching TrailRecon videos because of how great Brad captures and enjoys adventures! And now he blesses us with so much more knowledge. He explained videography and creative process better than most "tutorial" youtubers
I just wanna say thanks for being a responsible drone pilot who does their research. I see so many people fly in illegal zones and it bugs me. Keep up the great work!
that's one of the things I like about your videos, you don't show long segments of driving down any part of the trail. You really give a good feel for what an obstacle is like by giving a couple different angles of it and cutting into another part of the trail, and you really do a good job of narrating; that is a lot more interesting than music through a lot of it, and showing the spotter directing people over a tough part of the trail, and not editing out the mistakes really gives a little more reality to it, and really, I think people learn from seeing how a person might of got hung up or something broke or they had to manually lock the lockers to get up a part; it all makes people think about what the difference of having the lockers engaged or not having them engaged; it can be the difference of spinning out or grabbing enough traction to crawl up the rocks! I'm wanting to learn, and that is my main purpose of watching, but it's great to see some of the super nice people you hit the trails with as well!
I know we all really appreciate all the time and work it takes you to make these videos. I watch a lot of off roading RU-vidrs and yours are top quality. I can almost get a sense of being one of your buddies out on the trail with you.
Brad, love your videos and have been following you for a while now being a Jeep enthusiast. Love that you promote responsible drone flying. Keep it up buddy!
As someone who is looking to get into some of this with a few twists, and listing you and Lifestyle Overland as inspirations, this video came out at the perfect time. Literally looking at gear and going through 50 things in my head when this video popped up. Answered a bunch and I'm almost ready to roll even 3 months later. Thanks Brad!
I've enjoyed your channel tremendously since discovering it one night while surfing for overland camping ideas. At 72, I had to find a new outlet to keep enjoying nature as backpacking long distances and trekking up and down mountains was becoming more difficult. I've car (base) camped throughout the U.S., Europe and a little in the Middle East, mainly to explore trails that led to incredible scenery, historic sites and fishing spots. Watching your channel and Chris Shontz on Venture4WD has been inspirational in providing exciting new ideas for the remaining chapters in my life. The enthusiasm you guys have for this way of life is contagious and I've caught the bug!
There were many great tips in this video. Most of them were more important but the one that stuck out was the one about staying away from most of the transitions available. The one example you showed reminded me of the old Batman show.
Thanks Brad, we appreciate you sharing unselfishly every details on styles/techniques on how you come up with an interesting videos every time you post them.
Great job and glad you shared. It gives me a much better understanding on what it takes to post these videos. People like Chris Shontz with Venture4wd who is overland camping most of the year and the litebrite couple who post videos weekly from the road makes me appreciate the work they put in even more like you and the high quality content you put out constantly. Your adventures inspire so much so I am heading to Moab just after the easter jeep safari to see all I can in the week I will have out there as it is a long haul from Florida.
Love it! Great info. It’s work. And it takes dedication to build a brand and channel like you’ve got. And passion. Thanks for sharing this passion with us. It comes through in every video.
Brad, you should have 20.000.000 of subscribers. You are awesome, and your videos are the best around, for the quality, professionalism, and because of you.
I do not have a youtube channel and I agree with you 100%, I get bored easily watching 10 vehicles go over the same rock and usually I just click off and go to another video which has never been the case with yours. Thanks for the hard work
Man , I think its really nice of you to help people out like you do. You already take most of us places we cant go on our own and let us join you in a sense. I watch a lot of off road videos ....mainly to see places I cant go and get driving tips on hairy obstacles , hehe. You are the only one that really gives tips on how to get out and do it yourself. I appreciate it..We appreciate it .
Thanks Brad ... this is a question we all ask and you gave us a great video with those answers that is something that I will love to do... thank for inspiring us
I'm fairly new to the channel the last few months and I remember thinking how well done and professional the filming and editing is. It absolutely looks like an entire film crew shot these. Love this channel and I wish I had a Wrangler lol.
Hey thanks a ton for this help. I have been wanting to start capturing my trips for a while but have been intimidated by it all. I'm saving this to look back at.
Thank you for sharing Brad. This is so informative and helpful. This video is another fine example of your enthusiasm for offroading and the work you put in to bring top-notch content to us.
I've been studying your videos for over a year. You've reached a level of quality and mix of entertainment / information in your videos that many of us aspire to reach. Thanks for all your hard work. -Justin (Better Biomed channel on RU-vid)
Brad, I am so happy you made this video. Absolutely love the way your videos come out. I have been a long term sub and it is cool to see how much you have improved over the years. To be honest, I thought that you were now using a paid production crew due to the top notch quality. Now I know the most valuable asset is your son! Having someone you trust to drive your Jeeps on the trails to help you with your videos is priceless. Either way, you have already inspired me to create my own channel to share my journey. I will definitely put some of the tips I learned in the video to good use.
Wow, Brad, I loved this video and consider it as one of your most interesting to see what is involved in your great adventures. Your a true producer and master at what you do and that is why so many of us love watching your channel. I would just like to thank you. This was such a helpful video that it should have been for sale, hehe.
ok, i've watched this probably a dozen times now and you've inspired me to step up the game... after years and years of just gopro footage, i just picked up a 90d for channel videos! now to see how much i can kick it up a notch with a proper camera and proper glass! not 100% on a gimbal yet, but we're going to see... never owned one of those before, but if I do i might just have to snag the new RS3 that just dropped.
I love the fact you closed it out by telling people to go create and then committed to go checking out their content!! There needs to be less competition for clicks and more collaborative efforts in the community. I also echo the sentiments of a responsible drone operator, as a licensed operator my livelihood is often impacted by illegal flight activities. Party on Garth !!
your videos are fantastic. I get lots of compliments for not injecting music at all into my trips. it's just the audio from the offroading trip 99% of the time!
Brad, thanks for sharing the inside details, equipment, and your mindset. I’ve been watching your channel for a long time and it’s fun to go back and watch some of the early videos to see the massive progression in quality of production. Having been a long time watcher, its that gradual progression and constant improvement where you make it look really easy that tells me you’ve put in a ton of work to hone your craft. I hope it’s still as fun as it was in the early days!
More Power to you Brad & your group putting out totally awesome videos! I have been to many of the desert area's you show, you give a new life to Death Valley & Joshua Tree for me in your video's. I can say you do a great job putting all this content together on your RU-vid channel video's, yeah I love the dessert when the flowers are blooming red in April. Your videos are a great source for future expeditions for all us home bound in the northeast (waiting on Corvid 19 to die off like the oceans in the desert) we will be coming back west soon to revisit the places you show that we missed the 1st time. Please keep it coming, for me it is a great hope that things will get better in the near future, thanks again Brad.
Just came upon this video. Our family full time RV travels and just recently started to share our adventures and also just started the overland thing with our Jeep. What great information and I’ll have to try some of those techniques 👍🏻
Thank you for talking about the editing. Often times great content is ruined by overly "fancy" transitions and special effects. Don't get me started on bad, blaring music and audio. I often politely comment on YT channels when I find a great video with bad editing and horrible, loud music and get blasted by the content creator, but who are they creating the content for, me or themselves? Your is some of the BEST!
Really great video! I especially like how you talked about your learnings throughout the years and the what why and how of the equipment you use. That is also a great looking Gladiator.
Fantastic video! Your points really resonate, as far as transitions and use of music. Getting to hear the vehicles crunching down the road is a big part of why I like your videos. Thanks for taking the time to do this!
Boss thanks for the time you take to make this videos.. we love camping, and this videos inspire me to go outside with my kids and wife a lot more..keep the hard work.
This is exactly the video I've been looking for , so thanks! I'm sure things have changed over the last 4-years so I hope you will consider an updated video to include drone flying and any changes in your gear and filming practices. Great job!
Always love your stuff, your approach and just your easy attitude with everything. The hard work over the years shows! Keep it up please, your stuff is among my favorite stuff on RU-vid!
Great video Brad - I think a lot of people, including myself, think making a successful video/RU-vid channel can just happen, you show that it takes a LOT of work. I personally appreciate your effort.
Your videos are always awesome and inspiring, but this one was especially cool. I loved all the insights and tips you shared, but it's also really cool seeing some of the behind-the-scenes footage!
Good job Brad and thanks for all the video's. I know you work hard at it and it takes a lot of your time but the quality is great! Keep Rolling on TrailRecon
Always enjoy your videos, the camera work and editing show a lot of effort and planning. And you have a cooperative son, that's a big help in getting better footage. Having a second person who knows how to use the equipment and compose a shot is huge.
This was a fun video to watch! I was a broadcaster for 20 years (mostly radio, but with several years' worth of TV work sprinkled in), and it was fun to get this behind-the-scenes look at your production style. I particularly enjoyed your section on dynamic camera moves and shifts of point-of-view. It was a nice trip down Memory Lane for me, because I always had a reputation for enjoyable and unique, yet natural-feeling camera moves. I have the most fun when I get to think ahead and anticipate some detail that I want to capture, such as my then-toddler son's first steps into the Gulf of Mexico (I knew I wanted to capture that first small 10-inch wave curling around his legs while I steadied him, so I arranged all the settings on my 35mm Pentax for my wife, with a fast shutter speed to freeze the wave in place), or when my youngest daughter was born, and I sent her big brother and sisters ahead down the hallway so I could catch the moment when they first clustered up at the window to the neonatal ward to see their baby sister for the first time... so many ways to capture the story in a picture or a short video clip! You seem to have that same eye for the story. And I like that!
Oh... I also wanted to mention an open-source/freeware video editor that might be helpful to you or your audience: VSDC Free Video Editor and it's companion video-production products. It's a pretty good alternative to some of the expensive pro or commercial consumer products, with a feature-rich interface. And if a user likes the freeware version enough to upgrade to VSDC Pro, they can get a lifetime license for the Pro version for $20 bucks, which offers hardware acceleration and a supplemental audio-editing subsystem that allows nonlinear layered editing of audio tracks. I have it on my PC, and maybe one day I will be posting cool four-wheeling videos of my own, especially if I swing a transfer to Arizona (I love and miss AZ!)
Nice to see I'm not the olny jeeper / RU-vidr using the that gimbal. They take up space and take time to setup but definitely helps smoth cplis. Also use a Cannon 90 and m50 for super lightweight. Enjoy the behind the scenes, reminds me of our events and filming.
As ever Brad you put the information over in such a clear concise manner. Sharing great tips and it shows the amount of effort you put into your TR "Rocklander Docs". Which are very inspiring on so many levels. Keep wheeling and sharing your adventures.I love the variety of the TR trips, overlanding, gear and rig set ups you cover. Dusty trials ! Richard.
Another great video Brad! We've followed you for several years now and love your style. You've helped inspire us to build out our channel and record our off-road adventures!
Best Jeep channel ever! I have filmed so much stuff over the years and have been so scared of the editing part that it has sat in iMovies for a while, thanks for the video and the very helpful tips it has got me more excited to edit and film. 0IIIIII0
Much appreciated awesome tips and inspiration. Thanks for paying this knowledge forward it helps more than you probably even originally imagined it might
Brad, thanks for sharing this behind-the-scenes video. I have been creating videos for my family and putting them on RU-vid. I stopped because I didn’t feel like they were getting what I wanted from them. With these tips though I’m gonna put my equipment back to use.
I knew it was a lot of work putting all the pieces together and you do a phenomenal job Brad. Your personality brings out an upbeat enjoyable experience and that is why I am a subscriber to TrailRecon. Thanks man. PEACE
As person who loves photography and videography, in addition to Jeeping and ATVing, I have to admit, this was one of my favourite videos you have done. Love the behind the scenes of your videos. Hope to meet up somewhere in BC when you make your Alaska Trip.
Thanks for this video Brad. While the sexy trail shots get all the glory your underdog in all of your videos is your quality audio. Often over looked by many it makes your videos professional
I have watched many of your videos and I enjoyed the behind the scene information I appreciate all the work and the professional manner in which you record. Happy Travels and keep recording.
I love your channel and content. Wish we had trails like this in texas. Thamk you for also sharing your tips on all you do. Im trying to video all my trips with my young family.
Great video Brad! It's really cool to see what happens behind the scenes so to speak. Obviously you've learned a lot and the videos are second to none. Hope to see you on the San Diego trails some day.
I really like your videos because your videos are down to earth your down to earth just a real dude having fun and your always yourself in every videos i love it
