How to Make Fleece Liners for Your Guinea Pig Cage

I have had multiple requests to make these liners or instruct how to make them. I do not have time to make them for people so I made a video showing how to make a liner and pee pads. I have a 3 x 2 C & C Cage with a 2 x 1 loft. This video shows you how to make a liner for the bottom with attached sides that wrap around so that the pigs can't burrow underneath, a liner for the loft as well as six pee pads.

I love this video! It's straight to the point. In all the other fleece liner tutorial videos, the people just keep talking about random stuff, your video gives clear directions with no nonsense. Thanks!

My one issue with videos is that the fleece is NEVER absorbent. The last thing you want is for your piggies or someone else's piggies to get bumblefoot.

Make it easy on yourself and just buy the blanket kits when they go on sale at JoAnn fabrics. It comes with one printed piece and one plain piece. One large blanket kit will make a bottom liner, with sides, a top liner and several pee pads. Then just go to Wally World and get cheap towels for the insides of your top liner and pee pads! That's what I do because they have really cute patterns.

I used this video for my boys cage even though they don't burrow I found this very helpful. Now I have a girl that burrows like CRAZY!!!!! I am so glad to have this video to come back to while I make her cage liners. Doing it this way looks very clean and professional even though I am a new to sewing I really like how these come out.

I use terry cloth towels as the absorbent layer in the middle of the liners. Works like a charm. I only use that in the pee pads and the liner upstairs. For the large, bottom layer, there isn't anything in the middle. I use two to three layers of terry towels under the liner. I put adult bed pads on the colorplast first, they are plastic backed. Similar to doggie pee pads. Cheaper though.

Yes, I made one long strip. After you sew that on around the edges, you just have to sew the beginning end and ending end together.

You take fleece and cut long strips 14 inches wide, sew strip to strip to make one really long strip. You then pin the long strip all around all four sides of your liner and sew. I hope that makes sense!

This is an older post so hoping you see this question. First and foremost--amazing tutorial and such a huge help! My daughter just got three piggies and dang...stinks. LOL Wanting to make some of these ASAP to help her in keeping things tidy. For the strips that go on the outside of the bed liner (that surround the outside of the box) is it just one layer of fleece or two layers of fleece sewn together to make the 'log'?

Thanks so much for sharing. I made two sets of bedding for our new Guinea Pigs this week. They are not as nice as yours, but close and will suffice. Thanks again!
@rskibuk
@rskibuk 11 лет назад
You need two pieces 48 x 84 for the bottom piece. Then you need strips that are twice the amount of the height of your sides so if they are 6 inches you need to cut 12 in strips. You need to sew strips together to equal 264 inches so that it goes the whole way around. It's okay if it's longer, it gives you extra to work with for sewing the ends together and working around the corners.

I only adopted my guinea pigs about a month ago, still using bedding, but I'm really hoping to try this (I love to sew!) My (potentially obvious) question is, what exactly do you do with the pee pads? Do they go on top of the big fleece piece where they might potty more often? (my piggies are not potty trained at all....) Do you also have any advice on how to wash the fabric post-piggy use? How often do you need to clean?

I got tired of washing them. I now clean my 4 ft Guinea Pig cage every day using large unscented doggie pee pads and layers of paper towels. I push the doggie liners all the way up into the cage corners so no leaks occur. Then I wrap 2 layers of cheap $ Store paper towels to line the 4 edges so my GP will pee in the corners. Then I put 2 layers of cheap paper towels over the bottom, and Viva paper towels over that (they're very soft). The next day all I do is hold an empty kitchen bag open and roll everything up into the bag. The cage bottom never gets dirty and my Guinea pig loves to be part of the daily process.

You put the two cut to size pieces together right sides together with the flaps in the middle. That way, when you flip it right side out, the flaps will not be trapped in the middle. If you put the two pieces together then add the flaps to the top THAT will trap them in the middle. Hope that makes sense! Sewing can be a little tricky!!!

I don't put a middle into the bottom liner, since I use layers of towels on top of plastic backed absorbent liners. It's just easier to keep that all separate.

Yes, the pee pads go on top of the big fleece piece. I put the soiled ones in a Diaper Genie and I wash when I have a load. I wash in hot water with color free, fragrance fee detergent and white vinegar. I clean my cage every 7-10 days and wash the big fleece pieces and towels and pee pads together. If your machine has a Sanitize setting use it!

I love that there is a video that shows how to do this! and Thankfully my mom is an awesome seamstress so we have quite a project ahead of us. My guinea pig just had two babies yesterday and I have chosen to keep all of them. I had a question in regards to washing the material...should I just wash it all in one piece as purchased? and cut it after? or could I cut it and then wash it? I didn't know if it would shrink or not? Do you add 1c of Vinegar in each load (3 washes?)

Hi there, I just found this video and it's such a good crafty way to spruce up your pigs' bedding!! BTW, as for the pee pads, have you ever tried sewing in a little piece of plastic (sort of like on kids' bedding) to stop the urine from leaking onto the liner underneath? Just wondering :) Have a nice day!

If constructed correctly, the fleece will wick the pee to the towel in the center. You can usually use and flip over and use other side as well and nothing gets on to the liner below.

@rskibuk
@rskibuk 11 лет назад
I would definitely recommend using a sewing machine. To get an accurate measurement, measure bottom and add 1 inch to both measurements. Do the same for the top. For the sides, they are 14 wide, measure add all measurements to all four sides of one piece and that's how much 14" length you need to sew together to make a long strip. Do the same for the top piece. It helps to draw it out so that you can figure out how much fabric to purchase.

Wash it all first then cut it. Yes use vinegar in all three washings and all future washings. The vinegar will remove any odors that may be in the fabric. Please make sure that your baby pigs are females if you are keeping them. If any are boys, you must separate them.

Kind of helpful and was able to get a basic idea on how I should begin,, I did not need to see the detergent but I would have liked to see better dimension detail particularly for the side panel how to determine the length. Advising that it should be 14" wide well that would be an incorrect depth for our cage. It would have helped to have some visual on how you put the inner layers in the main liner, ie towels ad moisture barrier or maybe there are none? Then why do I need to stop layers from shifting by stitching three times around? I guess I am,more confused than I thought.
@rskibuk
@rskibuk 9 лет назад
Length is determined by the sum of all four sides. Instead of measuring, make one long strip and pin and sew it. The 14 inch width is based on a C&C cage with colorplast liner. It enables you to cover the inside 6 inches and the outside six inches and a little to tuck under. As for the "Quilting" of the bottoms, this is so that the layers don't shift or get bunched up when washing. Sorry you are confused, this is just basic sewing and many were able to recreate it for their situation. I am not in the business of educating people how to sew, this was just a simple video to show those who saw my other video how to make the liners.

From my own expirences with my chinchilla, they are machine washable BUT you might want to wash them in cold water and air dry the for they might shrink. And it depends on what weight your rats flip around because my chinchilla does just fine with them but he doesnt flip it around so I don't know. It's worth a shot if you have the time :)

I'm confused. You say to measure the cage to get the dimensions for the fleece cover. But you also said that you lift your cage off the coroplast boxes. My coroplast box is like wedged in so tight! I'm going to have to make a new one and subtract like an inch so that I can lift the cage off like you do. In that case shouldn't I be measuring the box and not the cage? Sense it's fitting on the box and not the cage? I just don't want to mess this up after messing up so much on boxes for two cages and wasting $30 on materials. Thanks(:
