Thank you, thank you, thank you for talking about needles and tension needed for sewing thick fabrics. I have spent hours watching these videos just to find that information. Really appreciate it.
I'm teaching myself how to make fleece items for my guinea pigs and I LOVE your step by step instructions on how to make a pee-pad. Thank you for sharing your easy to follow steps.
Hi. 3 years ago almost 4 I saw this tutorial since from 2 shih tzus I went to 5. Buying disposable pads was no longer an option. I just want to say they are still working and washing them is a breeze. Wash it in the machine and in the rinse put in vinegar. I love them and am making more as we speak since im moving to a bigger place and will need more. Thank you so much for this tutorial. It has saved me thousands of dollars.
The bottom facing floor should always be waterproof. Use Polyurethane Laminate Fabric facing the floor. Otherwise your floor will get ruined Otherwise the rest of the design is great for Puppy pads
Love this video. I used to sew all 4 layers together and then flip them inside out. This technique is faster and neater. Tried it out today and will do it this way from now on. Thank you
Thanks for this great video!! Today I finished 3 cage liners and about 8 pee pads... One of our pigs has skin issues and is losing hair. We were spending a fortune on paper bedding, and the vet recommended Oxbow, which is the most expensive!! $$ And their cubbies were STILL staying wet inside. I had fleece and purchased the u-haul pads. These are great!! For the price of one bag of new paper bedding, I made all these, and your tips were so helpful. Until her skin clears up, we're changing them daily. I only wish I made these sooner. They're super absorbent and dry on the fleece. And sooooo easy to change the liner...just pick it up, brush it off and wash it. The one's you buy on Etsy and other online sites are terribly expensive. Perhaps I should go into business and make some custom orders!! LOL! ;-) Thanks again and have a great week!!
Ty so much. I’d talk (write) your ear off explaining my situation. This was a blessing. Trying to make things as easy for my teen as possible as I will be out of commission, and wanted her to have enough supplies, and happy colors all around.
Hi, there. Thanks for this helpful video. Using a ball point needle was news to me! How many stitches per inch are you using in the part of the video you discussed putting your hand on the fabric to keep it straight as the foot feeds the material through? It seems that's always a guessing game for me when stitching pads.
have you tried the clips instead of pins? I have them but havent gotten around to using them. just been doing the towels with smaller fleece blankets but I have the Joan's materials and the waterproof liner for beds and diaper material for the middle. j need some uhaul I was going to try this bumb blanket you get at Walmart in a roll but I don't know if it will absorbe after the pea goes threw the fleece. if not, I hope I can use it for the outer liner fleece if it's not too cheap.
Any machine that has quilting capabilities. I use the brother LX3850, not sure if that's available in the US, but a similar machine is the brother BM3730.
Thank you so much for this tutorial! I saw a lot of others liners tutos on RU-vid, and to be honest I decided to follow one of these first... What a mistake! I don't know why I seemed to be the only one having this problem, but sewing 4 layers of fabric turned inside out was just impossible for my poor machine. So for my second attempt, I followed your tuto. So. Much. Easier. I actually enjoy making these now and I can't stop xD Thank you!!
Hello, as this Uhaul fabric is quite thick and made from recycled denim, can you tell me how long does it take to dry, machine or air?) And on the Uhaul website (section Questions ans answers) the company says that they do not recommend machine washing that product. I am a little confused. Can you help me unserstand. Thanks.
Thanks so much. This was really informative. I never heard of this Uhaul stuff and am definitely going to try it. I didn't notice a waterproof liner anywhere in this setup. Did I miss it? Or are your little dainties so tiny that the Uhaul soaks up all their wee? My dog is like 20 pounds so I definitely think I need to add something to mine to make it not leak through to the floor.
You can purchase waterproof mattress pad protectors from Amazon or other incontinence supply places fairly cheap and simply sew those as your very bottom layer. Or, another alternative would be a regular waterproof mattress cover - the ones that are terry cloth feel on top, not the quilted versions - and use that on the bottom layer. Once washed, fleece will wick the urine straight through to your floor so to protect that, you need to find something that is specifically 'WATERPROOF'. That is how I am making my piggy's pee pads and cage liners. Hope this helps!!
what kind of sewing machine do you have? I've been using a cheap little one that really cant handle the thicker fabrics and I'm looking to get a new one.
Michelle Krohn I have a brother lx3850 and a singer heavy duty... Look for a machine that has "quilting" abilities, they can usually handle several layers. Also use a heavier duty needle like 16/90 or a denim 😊
Great idea! Keep the EARTH cleaner! I use it for 5 years already. Soaking it for an hour (Washing soda and a little bit of Castile soap), then rinse it in cold water and wash it in my washing machine. Thank you, great video!
Hi! im considering doing this for my bunny litter box. may i ask you, how do you dispose of the soaking water (with washing soda and castile soap) after you are done soaking? can it be used on plants at all?
alarcon99 we need to do some research about it, because I don’t know. The best use of it is to dump it in your toilet, great cleaning bust. Then I pour it on my brick pathway in my yard. Good luck. I used adult urine protective sheets, cut it into 4 pcs. $15 are lasting me for 5 years. Good luck!
@@amillia222 wow! thanks for your quick reply! im considering using a combo of these with pine equine pellets for my bunnies litter boxes. ive been using puppy pee pads but i hate to think of what im doing to the environment. but to be honest the eek factor of having urine leak through and washing them in my washer was a big turn off. But between your presoak method and making a diy washer machine w/ 2 buckets and a plunger, im all set! Thanks again luv!
Hi, I noticed that there isn't a backing on one side. Do you think that would help? I'm trying to protect wood floors so thinking fleece, furniture fabric, vinyl. Maybe less slippery as well. Thoughts?

Hi Dana, yes, I advise washing and drying everything first. Fleece doesn't really shrink, but the U-Haul does and you want shrinkage to happen before sewing so your pads/liners don't bunch up after. Wicking can be done before or after the pads/liners are made. Use HOT water and test the wicking with warm water 😉
Thank You for this question. I would not have thought to wash the furniture pad but I do always wash my other fabrics first. I have never heard of "wicking" so I am going to look that up lol. About to make my elderly chihuahua "Angel Hope" some pee pads.. Got my "Steeler's" fabric and a beautiful tie dye material with solid backs and will make a pink / purple pad. Thank You so much for the video. I also am left to assume that the furniture pad was cut to the actual dimension while the fleece was the 1" longer for seam allowance?
So I need some reusable pads for my cat. (Sometimes he goes in front of the litter box for some reason, so as even it was recently scooped. I want to make some, but I don't have a sewing machine. Can you suggest an easy to use machine that isn't too pricey?
Singer and Brother both make "beginner" machines that are under $100 An alternative to sewing is to get fusible iron on webbing. There are a few good "no sew" liner tutorials on RU-vid 😃
Hi, my Maltese is 16.5 years old and is incontinent. At the moment he is wearing belly bands which is very expensive I was considering making him pads to wear. Would the recycle denim work or would it be too thick or even indeed be too heavy. I live in the UK - I’m trying to locate this item. Thank you for your video.
You can use an old cotton pillow case, velcro and a female sanitary pad to catch the pee. There are other tutorials in RU-vid on how to make them. Good luck! #teamfrostyfaces #seniordogsrule
Chewy.com is where I got Angel "Diapers" but she hates so bad to wear them and they're such a pain to get on her but they are cute and washable and for this reason and not the ones for a female cycle. If you weren't in the UK, and needed "Small" I'd send you 2 packs of the first ones they sent because they sent the wrong size. I am going to hold on to the Medium for when she can becomes incontinent. Right now, the meds she is on for heart failure just makes her have to pee a lot so she uses the pee pads but so expensive.
Hi. I made 11 of these 3 almost 4 years ago. I wash them in the bulky selection of the washing machine with regular detergent however in the rinse I put some white vinegar. Removes the smell. Once a month I wash it with one cup of vinegar 1 cup of baking soda and detergent. Nothing in the rinse. They are like new and I have 5 shih tzus.
What kind of sewing machine do you have? I have a Brother sewing machine and it just wont handle this many layers! It's so annoying....the thread balls up on the bottom. I would love hear any advice you could give me. Thanks!
Carol Donaldson Hi! I currently have a Brother LX3850. If your thread is bunching, check your upper tension. If it still bunches rethread your machine completely. Also change your needle to one meant for heavy materials such as a denim 90/14 or 100/16 work really well! You can also try giving your machine a good cleaning, that usually works for me!
Yep! A friend of mine with a senior dog who had bladder problems has a couple of these set up on top of cut out squares of shower curtain liners and they work great for her!
Hey if your fleece is cut at 13x13-- does that mean you cut the uhaul to be the 12x12 so it has those edges ?? Anyone else tried this and know the uhaul measurements ?
Hi Amanda! Yes your U-Haul should be an inch smaller on all sides 😉 I was rewatching this video and realised I left that very important tip out! Thank you for asking that question!
@@cavylover8243 thanksnfor clearing that up for me.... I figured that to be the case and went ahead and did it that way. I was trying fo hand sew and it was taking 4 ever so I ordered a sewing machine. Thanks for taking the time to make this video. It really helped a lot !
@@cavylover8243 You answered this above to someone else's question but told them a 1/2 " so now I'm quite confused lol... your video looks like the fleece is 1" bigger than the pad. Can you please let me know which it is? 1" or 1/2"? Thank You so much.
Am I doing something wrong? I keep hearing people say that theirs last 7 to 10 days. I made this and put one in Wednesday morning and by Thursday night my whole living room was reeking like pig pee, and my girls are potty trained and mostly use their litter box... :(
Denim in itself is not absorbent.... The uhaul padding is shredded denim and cotton fibers. If you don't have uhaul available you can use towels or mattress protectors 😄
Make sure its the recycled denim pads. I found this tip 2 years ago on a different website, in this.video she mentions that the quilted pads are not absorbent. These are made of synthetic fibers, and the denim is 100% cotton and absorbent. They are also thicker than just buying denim by the yard. You can also use medical pads that are cotton on one side and water barrier on the other. Ive also used rubber sheeting which is used for bed wetting, and a product called PUL. Its used for toddler training pants. Both of these products are sold in Fabric stores.
@@kristintourville948 OP answered 2 different answers and trying to figure out. It's no 1/4 though.. you need more than that... It's either 1/2" or 1" but the fleece looks about an inch bigger than the pad.
My idea is to use wool to knit a large rectangle and then felt it by washing in hot water. It will shrink and become thicker and will be very absorbent and much more durable than the U-Haul stuff. And there’s no shortage of wool in Australia! :-)
I’m gonna start doing this. The one thing I struggle with, is the smell. My fur babies always use the pee pads and that area smells really bad. I change them out 2-3 times a day. Any suggestions on how to help this?
@@MichelleS-Gamer maybe you are joking but scented candles are bad for your pets and humans. Linked to cancer and small critters are sensitive to scents as it is.
There’s no u-haul here really, you’d have to ship it from US. Try using toweling or Zorb instead. Zorb is expensive but it’s super-absorbent and hypo-allergenic and breathable. I’ve been using it for all my items and it’s the better than other things I tried.
@@adriannamalawska3089 Thanks for the tip. I'll try Zorb. It's to make a bed for my elderly cat who pees on the windowsill where she now lives, as it's above the radiator, but her aim is not good, so her bed gets wet. I cover a piece of foam with plastic bags and then layer puppy training pads over the top, but I'd prefer to make a few of these pads in the video, and wash them.
Anna Albury I used to use puppy pads for my Guinea Pigs but I’m trying to go more zero waste and Zorb can be reused for many many years it’s been great so far. Good luck with your cat xx
@@adriannamalawska3089 Thank you! We don't have Zorb in the UK and my cats soaks her way through 4 pads per day, or more. You are right to go zero waste, but I can't find a substitute.
Anna Albury I live in UK and I get Zorb from website called Cuddle Plush Fabrics or something like that if you type it in the browser it should pop up and just look for zorb. If you still can’t find it or want to buy ready made pads just message me. I make and sell pee pads and fleece liners with Zorb in the UK x
Since the uhaul is so absorbent, it shouldn't go through, especially if you're using 2 layers. But if my cage was on the floor, I would lay a shower curtain down first just to be safe :)
