I took a small blacksmithing course years ago and made myself a little steel like that out of an old file, it's great. We used to use it to start ritual fires in the day. Nothing feels better than something you made yourself. I got out of the habit as I got older and the ground seems further away now when leaning over! I would have loved to keep smithing but I am so small and teachers usually so large I was always bumbling around fighting with how small my hands were. Great video. Have a nice day, Sir.

I love flint and steel. My favorite method after the handdrill. It could still be viewed as a survival method. A knife with a high carbon content will of course throw some sparks when struck on the spine with a proper stone. Two options if you didn't have char would be very very dry powdered punkwood or the ovum from a milkweed (asclepias ssp) pod that has gone to seed, and turned grey on the outside. The ovum is the rusty orange colored part inside the pod that the seeds attach to. It's more difficult than with a proper flint and steel with good char, but both punkwood dust and milkweed ovum will catch a spark without needing any pre-charring. Pin the ovum down with the tip of your knife, or put the tip of your knife into your pile of punkwood dust, and strike with your flint so your sparks are directed downward onto your material 😊 Great video Bjorn, wonderful to see you in your element.

Nice strike-a-light demo, Bjorn! I like to start campfires with flint & steel. It brings a sense of tradition to a camp. To anyone starting out with this method, I recommend making your first strike, hard and strong, as the char-cloth falls apart so fast, (very delicate). Skol!

Norway's climate is more like B.C.s because they have the warm Gulf Stream coming up from Africa along the coast of Europe. That's why both southern B.C. and England are so damp. P.S. in Southern Ontario.

Another great video, thank you. Did you know that Chaga is a very beneficial drink for your health? The trick is a long slow simmer. Many people don't know that and just boil it but it's much more beneficial with a slow simmer. Just the chunk you picked up can be put into a six quart slow cooker, add water to the top and cook on low for four to six hours. I usually set it up at night and use the "Keep warm" setting and let it go over night. You can reuse the chunk more than once and it stays active. I keep mine in the refrigerator between batches and use it until it doesn't change the color of the water anymore. You can just drink it when it's done or use the tea it makes for other things. I've used it to make other teas, coffee, soups, stews, gravy, rice, etc. Anything you use water for that you don't drain away. You could research health benefits besides just using it for cancer patients to see if maybe you'd like to use it as well.

Awesome job! A small detail that can make a difference is to put the char cloth over the rock instead of under it. When striking the steel to the rock, the sparks shaven from the steel tend to jump upwards ;)

I like to use agate or jasper as I get more sparks than with chert or flint. Haven't made a flint and steel fire for quite a few years, but I use the agate and jasper in my flintlock pistol.

I've had the same flint & steel kit for more than 40 years! The steel is still in good shape, but my flint nodule has become very rounded over the decades, (no more sharp edges!) and so doesn't produce a nice hot spark anymore. Seems it is difficult to find a decent source of flint nodules for this purpose! Thanks for the video, Bjorn!

Truly gratifying making fire this way! I used a sharp rock looking much like those lumps around the campfire site before getting my hands on flint. Also, if you struggle with the birdsnest not catching fire, I would recommend pulling apart the fibres of pure jute string - something I keep in my charcloth tin

Love the video - great demo of the skills needed when modern means are not available. All of your videos on all of your channels are fantastic! However, I do have one complaint - there was a LOT of dry grass close to the fire box, and in the area between where you were striking and the firebox. It doesn't take much for a small piece of burning material to fall off the bird's nest and start a forest fire. We have had a little fire burn millions of acres here in the US. Please put your fire box in a cleared area (or the fire ring of stones nearby). When you said "Ow" my heart stopped and I thought that if you had just dropped a live fire right into natural tinder at your feet, we were going to see a wildfire close up. Please work a fire on bare dirt or stone.

I love that steel. There's a fungus in the UK that can be used too for fire starting. The common name is King Alfred's Cake, but I forget the Latin name. I think it's something Concentrica. It grows on a few trees, but Ash is the main one. Round, quite smooth and black. It looks a bit like round lumps of coal growing near the bottom of trees or on fallen wood. Chaga is not as common here. Rare enough that if I found some, unless it was an emergency and I had no other option, I'd be using it for tea, not fire making. Which kettle do you have? It looks a nice one.

As a content creator, you have to assume you're talking to people who are at a basic level of certain information. Most people don't camp out on survival videos and learn to build fires and purify water. You'd be surprised to learn how many are still asleep to the current and future events. Making fire is one of the most important skills to have for a man.
