I JUST RELEASED AN UPDATED VIDEO covering the best settings for your GoPro Hero 7,8 and 9 Black! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-3DoKXA8tCq0.html
The Loam Ranger, I have a question, if you have like 20 clips would you have to colour correct them individually or can you use a template to correct all the clips at once. Oh and I came to this video because of the video you just mentioned and I loved it, you are so helpful and honest. Keep up the good work!
@@kirbinTime I can answer this for you. You color correct one first. then select/highlight clips that you want to apply the same settings in the "color" tab/screen. use the mouse wheel click to click on the color corrected one and it will just copy those settings for you.
Yea am colour blind and I do have a camera, no gimble though evidently hero 7 black has something. You can still see the difference and just make the picture clearer and more vibrant. Grabbed davinci resolve 15 it is free.
man wow. JUST WOW. I should write a whole paragraph on just how satisfied i am with this video. I learnt so much, and the best part? I had fun doing it!
Really appreciate this video as I just got a GoPro and had no idea where to start. Quick note, in the color section there IS an actual Shadow, Midtone, Highlights adjustment. If you see right above Gamma there are three dots for different windows and you are in the first. If you click over to the third dot there are actual settings for Shadow, Midtone, and Highlights Not sure if this will change your editing process as it already looks good, but figured I'd share the discovery :)
You're not just a shredder of the gnar, but also an artist on the trail! Incredible stuff LR, I think I'm going to keep going back to this well of information over the next several months! Thanks Ranger!
This is hands down the most useful two videos on the go pro I've seen (well these two, along side the "flashing a go pro hero 2018 into a 5 black" that gave me all the tuning options you discus on a previously basic camera) brilliantly shot and presented. First time viewer of your stuff and future regular viewer. Subscribed. Happy trails man.
Hey LR. I've probably watched a dozen or so videos about color correcting GoPro footage, but this video is the best I've seen so far. Its simple without being over-simple, and better yet it's specifically for MTB footage! Thanks so much.
You can use the the white and the black cross next to Gain and lift to set the brightest and darkest points of the image. It does a pretty good job. You just click on the cross, then click on the image for what you want to set. The Autowhitebalance is also pretty good, and does make the job very easy. Espacially the snow shot would take like 3 clicks and youre done. :)
Hands down the best gopro related videos on youtube. I come back to this series every time I want to make a video, and it always makes my footage look 10000% better. Thanks for the help, keep it up!
Been a MTB’er for a number of years and just purchased my first GoPro! Man I sincerely appreciate this video, I had no idea I even needed to edit GoPro footage let alone figure out what software to use and become proficient with that as well! My kiddo is on a strider and I wanted to make a progression video of her moving to pedals now I’m actually confident I can make a decent vid, also have a trip to angel fire planned in a few months and now I can dial all this in, thanks brother 🙏
I've been really struggling with getting the gopro color correction right in Premiere CC. This video helped tons! Even though its a different software, this was brilliant! I was totally overthinking it, and after one quick pass I ended up with a much better result. Thanks!!
@@ThatsJustEric I know this is a 6 month old comment, but the software he's using in the video is called Davinci Resolve and it's a full powered professional editing suite for free. Adobe Premiere Pro is a tried and true alternative at 30$ a month for the whole adobe suite of programs.
And the universe provides, thanks for sharing this with the community, this is exactly what I’ve been wanting to find out how to do as I’m just trying to learn how to film and edit. Cheers 🍻
Maaannnnn....I can't thank you enough for this. My son and I are starting a video project after a lifetime of being on a bike literally saved me from checking out of the game of life at the hands of a very dangerous blood disorder last summer and we of course want it to look as good as possible. This will really, really help. Thank you.
Exactly what I needed. I don't want to become an expert in colour correction, I don't want to spend hours adjusting setting and I don't even need to understand what I'm doing or why it works. I just want it to work. This was perfect.
i used sony vegas. and moved to da vinci recently. let me say one thing. resolve is easier to understand and some features are faster done in resolve also. but i still love vegas hehe..
Recently switched to resolve from vegas pro. I will not be going back. The learning curve when switching is pretty strong, but the amount of tools you have *for FREE* vs a paid program like vegas pro is just insane. Resolve is so much more powerful. tons of tutorials on youtube to help you out.
Love your version of color correcting. I've watched a ton of videos of people trying to get it perfect. That's all well and good, but I'm with you, I want to spend as little time while getting a really good quality. Everything you've recommended is noted and now I just have to do something worth filming.
Hey Ryan, great video! If you're trying to see a before and after, you can hold the shift key and press the D key to toggle between the to. Another thing that you could use are "still" that way you can copy and paste the same look onto multiple clips. I've worked with resolve a bunch so if you have any questions I'd be happy to talk some tech color science stuff with a fellow biker.
This is just like using levels and curves in photoshop. Love the honesty about learning enough to make it look good and not too much more. Keep em coming!
Hey fella great vid. Do you stick to the same levels from GoPro Hero 7 footage? And adding my voice to request levels/settings for snow footage. Cheers again.
Wish I could like this like a million times. So specific and to the point. I can use this for my videos with my normal camera and the gopro I just got. Thank you so much for doing this.
That's for sharing DaVinchi Resolve. I'd never heard of it before and it looks like a great, simple yet powerful editor and best of all it's free unlike other editors which cost a small fortune.
Hi mate I watched this series last month and have followed every step, pretty much exactly. I have just uploaded my first video and it looks great, so cheers!
Thank you for putting these together. I've watched a ton of tutorials about color grading. They spend far more time, and while the final product looks better over all, they're working on cinematic short films. I really enjoyed this because it makes it simple to color grade for POV action shots. I can't wait to start to use some of your tips.
I've been looking for this kind of video for ages. Great to see i watched pt 1&2. I have a hero 8 black so now I've got to try and figure out bits and pieces so I can it to record flat images 👍ive subscribed as I believe theres much to learn from your channel keep up the good work.
Thank you so much! This was EXACTLY what I needed. I've watched 3-4 hours of Da Vinci tutorials & was absolutely none the wiser. All I want to do is edit my travel videos, not create an Oscar winning film. Cheers again L.R.!
Thank you so much for posting these two videos, I’ve learnt so much from them. Now I’m looking forward to getting out there and putting it all together. Again, thank you so much 👍
The Loam Ranger, just one question... did you convert the files from MP4 to another format to import them in to Davinchi? It doesn’t seem to like the MP4 from my Hero 5 as it just won’t import it.
In complete admiration of your pragmatic attitude to quick & efficient editing. I used to spend ages on photoshop; now it's raw/ auto/ tweak/ straighten/ sharpen and that's about it. Learning Resolve from scratch is a pretty steep curve, but hoping to apply the same principle and to achieve reasonable results. Thank you!
I've always wondered why my Hero 4 black footage was crappy, I have a SJCam M20, which knocked the spots off the gopro, both on standard auto settings. I read that the focus on the gopro could actually be out, and after messing with the lens, still never managed to get the quality I was expecting/hoping for. Great video you have done, i'm now going to start the experimenting with the setting. It would be great if you could do small video clips explaining each of the individual settings in protune so novices like me could get out the camera, look at the weather and tap in your recommended settings for the type of day, giving us an idea why.. Either way, I've learnt a lot, thank you. Kind regards.
I'm new at using a GoPro so I am gathering information on using it to the best of my ability, and you are helping me immensely. Thanks for your clear and direct videos!
Dude! You are freaking awesome! Thank you so much for this little series. You covered everything I've been wanting to know, and I didn't even have to search for it!! Subscribed my man. Thank you again!
Any idea if I can get this program on Windows 10 Home edition? 2.16ghz processor with 4 gigs of ram and I believe 500+gb harddrive. I'm using a relativly new, cheaper HP laptop. if not, do you have a program that you can suggest? Preferablly free... lol. Thanks for your help brotha. btw, I kept my word. I subscibed to your patreon page :-)
This changed the way I produce my vlogs! I'm still a ways off from a super quality final product, but this thing brought me into the 21st century. I stopped struggling against Premiere Pro CS6 (and even abandoned Premiere Pro CC) thanks to this video. Quality workflow and such a high quality output. Thanks man!
Thanks again for the first tip. So I replaced my settings which is the same as BKXC before to yours, but my footage turned out to be dull and blurred I didn't know what went wrong so I went back to BKXC setting for the time being. Now I'm gonna watch this video of yours. of course I commented before watching it. Thanks Mate.
I'm so stoked dude!!!!!!!! This has solved so many problems that i've been beating my head on the wall over ahah,, i honestly believe that a video that teaches how to transition between footage or audio? but I'm absolutely in love with your channel atm! keep at it dude! keep shredding gnarly stuff!!
WOW MAN, ive learned more in this 25 min video then all the videos ive watched about gopros over YEARS of shooting. your the man for these videos. thanks. I mainly shoot motorcycle , snowboarding, boating and vacation footage with my friends and family. My new GP8 should be here tomorrow. cant wait to get some footage so I can use all these tips
TBH I was literally searching for something simple to understand, and this just helped me alot!!! I’ve learned what i wanted in a simple words, thank you so much !! 🙏🏼
Man, the difference it makes is huge! Thank you. I thought you had to apply the grade manually to each clip, then discovered if you've got clips from the same lighting area you can use '='and '-' as shortcuts to apply same grade used in previous and 2 previous clips ago.
Handy tips, I’ve been struggling to get nice footage from my GoPro Session 5 for a while now, I’m going to try out the stuff you go over in these videos.
Thank you for making this video! I downloaded Davinci Resolve because of this video and it's amazing! I did figure out how to do before/after comparisons of the color grading and it's so simple. Do your color grading like you did in the video and then do the reset thing exactly like you did. Then go to Edit->Undo and it will restore the settings to what they were prior to the reset. You can then use Edit->Redo to go back to the reset. Going back and forth between Undo and Redo will let you compare directly.
Just bought my first GoPro, went for the Hero 7 Black edition. What settings would you recommend for a dark area filled with lasers, music and lights, smoke etcetc?
This is a great video to show people that make those gopro 7 vs 5 or whatever model theyre comparing. They are almost always using the factory settings and of course the newer models will have some of the factory presets looking slightly better than the older models. But this video proves that you can make your Hero 4s or 5s look just as good as the 7 (maybe not the 8) so long as you have the correct settings and tweak your colors in editing!
Got so focused on the lack of contrast in the snow scene until I saw the chair lifts - Oh your riding a bicycle down a ski slope with snow on it! Wow! Love the mellow mood setting music. BTW - you could plug a eGPU into your laptop and that will handle the graphics processing! Also, look at using **"proxies"** - supported by most video editing software -- it will generate a small low quality version of your video. You do all your edits (fast and easy) then at render it will use the original video files to apply your edits with NO loss of quality. Proxies are the cheapest way (free) to get more out of your existing hardware.
Dude, great video series! I recently cut some GoPro footage for a family member. Chances are, they used the auto settings. I can't wait to properly set up their camera and see what can be done in post. Subbed as I will be sticking around. Thanks for the awesome content!
Fun learning new things. Great job. Well, I am brand new to using a GoPro. I have done a lot of photography with my Nikon and Sony DSLR and iphone but not videos. I will be going to Hawaii and hope to get great footage, especially under water. Do you have any tutorials on underwater filming and editing? Finally, once I have edited, can I upload and share on on google photos or iPhotos?
after watching this and playing with iMovie for a minute I'm like blown away at how much better I can get my video's to look. and I knew nothing about setting the camera up to capture colors better before hand. everything I filmed was on auto settings on a fujifilm. like night and day difference. thanks.
Thanks for that Ryan, one hell of a video, looking forward to trying it out. What spec is your laptop? Need something grunty for 4K right? Good luck making your channel full time, sure a Summer of riding will up the likes and subscribers. Churr from New Zealand 🇳🇿
Is this indeed the minimum needed to do this post-prod color editing? My laptop literally crapped out and it's time for me to buy a new one. @@TheLoamRanger
Thanks for taking the time to teach about our techniques. You have motivated me to stop being so lazy and relying on the default gopro settings. My videos are about to come to life!
Are you sure they won't skip 16 or 17 versions and go straight to 18? :D This video is going to be up on my desk top for some time as a reference. Thanks!
Nice one Ryan. I color-correct about as much as iMovie(!) lets me but might be looking at Resolve for that extra adjustment. There’s gonna be a lot of people now look at their footage and say “y’know, it really DOES look washed out!”
I am grateful for your fantastic video tips Mr. Loam and I can’t wait to employ them. You are very generous! I have a tip for you too. Check your audio settings. With the quiet music in the background being compressed by your system, you basically are adding a lot of harmonic distortion to the sound of your voice. It almost sounds like there is a salt or pepper shaker rolling across the table you are sitting next to. I love your channel! Just trying to help. It also kind of sounds like running water. Have a great weekend! Who knows, maybe I have a bunch of blown speakers, but I don’t think so;)
There's one thing I missed here: So you color correct one clip but how would you transfer all the settings over to another clip in the same setting? Like for instance if the camera made the cut, but the action keeps going.
FlowPublican - I use Davinci Resolve on Windows. To copy the grade applied to a clip, click the node, press CTRL + C, then click on the next clip, click the node, then press CTRL + V. If your clip has more than one node, then you need to do it repeat this for each node.
You can right click on the main image in the viewer of a colour corrected scene and "Grab Still". It will put a still image off to the left. When you want to apply the same grading to another scene, just select the scene and right click on the still image and select "Apply Grade".
So I just bought a gopro 7 black, and I have never filmed my rides or anything. Overwhelmed to say the least, and really bummed at my first footage. So I knew there was good footage being uploaded, searched and found this video, I just want to say Thank you. My footage still looks like potato but it's a improvement and I'm super excited to get into editing because of these videos. Thank you Loam Ranger!!! If you ever have time to take a look at my footage and critique it, I would really appreciate it. Also if your ever in the salt lake city area hit me up and I'll show you all the local spots!!!
Great tutorial. Very informative. I downloaded and tried DaVinci last week. Unfortunately my laptop didn't quite got the muscles for it, so I tried Filmora instead. Cost you a few and maybe not as feature packed as DaVinci. But close enough. But then, due to a Avast update followed by a Windows update, my laptop went blank. Found a fix, which I spend all night last night trying without any luck. So I'll try again tonight. And hopefully I soon will get the chance to try out all the magic I've learned :) Then back to experimenting on camera settings (4k or 2.7? (less file size, a tad more out of the batteries) Superview or Wide? (maybe cropping 4:3 to 16:9?) Till then, have a good one!
Man, you should start a udemy course on this topic as another passive income stream. You’re really good at it. And I think you’ve got a lot more knowledge to share. Good work!
