I can't believe my eyes! I never liked the half square triangle patterns because I was hating the tedium of the cutting and the sewing. This is phenomenal and I am really itching to give this a whirl. Thank you so much for this! Wow!

I hate squaring half square triangle blocks - this eliminates the slowest and most aggravating part. Thanks.
@KitsbyCarla
@KitsbyCarla 8 лет назад
I can make 100 in an hour, they don't require squaring or pressing. I do take care when cutting apart. If the cut line goes crooked then the units won't work. So i challenge you to just try it. My techniques are shortcuts for those of you that are already thinking of the next project when making the current one. Hope you find it a time saver.

Hi Donna, I see you ordered the practice kit cover pages and were able to download them. You will need to order the actual shortcut sheets to get the full information. The practice kit cover pages are a mini project and give the dimensions you need to make them, not the full set of sizes and construction tips.

If you make your strip units with bias strips, you don't have to make that sacrifice (four bias edges), but it's still a shortcut to masses of tidy little units! Add that "triangle math" 1/2" to your strip width when using 45deg bias strips.
@Carlaklop
@Carlaklop 2 года назад
Hi, that is a good point that has been brought up before. I find sewing the bias strips more problematic than sewing bias units as they are small and do not cause any problem. Thank you for your comment though. I appreciate any and all....

The camera was too far away to see what your were trimming off the hst's - it wasn't at the seam end where you trimmed, but on one corner of the light fabric...hope you will explain why.
@KitsbyCarla
@KitsbyCarla 2 года назад
Hi Georgia, I think you mean the little pieces left at the corners because seams were pressed open. If you try this method you will see them. I just cut them as I go so they don't add thickness to the seams when you sew HSTs together

Realistically, and to insure accuracy of the finished HST measurement, should each HST unit be measured? If so, and squaring is needed, then I'm having a little difficulty grasping how this method truly is faster and easier than the four-at-a-time method. I'd love it to be true, but I noticed how you had to fiddle with constantly checking the accuracy of the previous cut before cutting the next strip. Please understand that I'm not intending to criticize your method in any way...I just have legitimate questions :-)
@KitsbyCarla
@KitsbyCarla 7 лет назад
Gayle...no you don't need to measure each HST. and no squaring up is not needed.When they are cut apart they are pressed and ready to go. If you can do over 100 in an hour doing four at a time including pressing and squaring then it won't be faster for you. Yes checking that you are at 45 degrees and cutting the correct width is part of the process and still get 100+ in an hour. When cutting the strip apart into individual HST's requires no measuring you are cutting point to point.
@GayleHallAZ
@GayleHallAZ 7 лет назад
Thank you so much for taking time to respond, Carla :-) I certainly cannot make 100 HSTs in an hour using the 4-at-a-time method! I'll be using your method the next time I need a lot of HSTs in a quilt. I have the Stripology ruler, so cutting the WOF to start will go even more quickly. Thank you again!

This looked like a good idea, so I tried it. I need 4 1/2" unfinished HST for Friendship Star blocks. When I went to cut the strips, I lost 4 1/2" L x 1" W strip of fabric on either side of my "points". Not worth losing this much fabric, so I am currently ripping the seams of the strips (28 of them) to save my fabric. Maybe this works only on 2 1/2" HSTs??

This may be fast but please be aware, every single side of these are on the bias. Beginning quilters beware! Seasoned quilters know how to handle bias but it can be very frustrating for a beginner quilter when those blocks go wonky. Try starching your fabrics first.
