How To Make Jewelry: All About Clasps
When you are buying your materials to make a necklace or a bracelet, you will need to choose a clasp. Here’s an overview of some different kinds of clasps.
Lobster clasps are a good all-purpose clasp. We choose them a lot for both bracelets and necklaces. We think they’re easy to use and we like that you can use them with chain to make your necklace or bracelet adjustable. If you choose a lobster clasp, consider the size of the clasp. Some are small and look very petite, but they can be hard to use.
Toggle clasps are usually prettier than lobster clasps. If you don’t want a lobster clasp in your design and want something with more style, choose a toggle clasp. We recommend them more for a necklace than a bracelet. They are not quite as secure on a bracelet. (Although we have made bracelets with toggle clasps before!) Toggle clasps can add a lot of style to a project and it’s okay for the clasp to be worn in front and show because it’s pretty! It's fun to collect pretty toggle clasps for later projects. We find the best ones at bead shows and bead stores.
A toggle clasp comes with two parts - a ring and a bar. Sometimes they come connected together, but you can take them apart to put them on your jewelry project.
S-connectors are another kind of jewelry clasp. They also look good on necklaces and can be worn in front. They are shaped like an S. They usually have a jump ring at each end to connect to your project.
Box clasps are great for bracelets. They snap together securely and are easy to attach even with one hand. If you have a multi-strand project look for a clasp with multiple loops to attach to.
We love magnets clasps, especially for bracelets. They are easy to put on! But be careful to choose a magnet clasp that is strong enough for your beads and won’t come apart easily. You don’t want to lose you bracelet!
Whatever clasp you choose, we recommend matching it to the metal in your project. Clasps come in all metals - silver, gold, antique brass, copper. Just get shopping and get inspired!

I was really hoping you would show how to attach your bead strand to the double or triple loop clasp. I’m trying to make a three strand choker and my clasp will be showcased in front, since it has a nice onyx stone on it. I don’t know how to attach to the clasp, where it will be pretty.
@TheONeilSisters
@TheONeilSisters 2 года назад
Hi Gigi, We have a multi-strand necklace tutorial that might help. This one has three strands going to a single loop clasp: runningwithsisters.com/multi-strand-necklace/ If you have multiple loops to attach to, just put one on each loop. Hope that helps! Jennifer & Kitty

I hope you can help, ladies. I have thick pendant. I tried 12mm rings, looks so big and pinch clasps 9x20. to small...Help. What clasp can I use?
@TheONeilSisters
@TheONeilSisters 2 года назад
Hi Wendy, When you say the pendant is thick, are you looking for a way to attach it to a chain or necklace? Like a pinch bail? Or does it have a loop and you need a way to attach the loop to a chain? Jennifer & Kitty

@TheONeilSisters
@TheONeilSisters 3 года назад
Thanks George! The material you choose for the clasp should match the material used for the jewelry. But other than that, it's up to you. We use a lot of silver-plated and gold-plated clasps. Hope that helps! Jennifer & Kitty

Hi! I am a little confused. I have rhinestone trim 2mm wide that i would like to turn into a necklace. I can't string it onto a wire and I have no idea what to do! Is it possible to make a necklace with rhinestone trim at all?
@TheONeilSisters
@TheONeilSisters 5 лет назад
Great question. Are you describing rhinestone cup chain? Here's an example of cup chain: runningwithsisters.com/colorful-rhinestone-bangles/ To attach a clasp to cup chain they make special cup chain ends like this: www.artbeads.com/cup-chain-findings/ If your rhinestone trim is more like a ribbon, you can use crimp ends like we did here: runningwithsisters.com/make-an-easy-choker/ Let us know if you need more help! My son (42) has asked me to make him a bracelet. Do you have any suggestions or tutorials on designing masculine jewelry? He’s a very sharp dresser and in the oil business. Any ideas?
@TheONeilSisters
@TheONeilSisters 5 лет назад
Hi Jane, We are looking at doing some more masculine designs ourselves. We suggest looking on Pinterest for "masculine bracelet DIY". Does he like paracord? We have had people adapt our Leather Friendship Bracelet for a man. They swap out the beads. We've even seen silver nuts (from the hardware store) used for the beads. runningwithsisters.com/adjustable-leather-friendship-bracelet/ And this Boho Leather Wrap Bracelet : runningwithsisters.com/boho-leather-wrap-bracelet/ This one can also be made more masculine with thicker leather and the choice of stones. runningwithsisters.com/gemstone-leather-friendship-bracelet/ Hope that helps! Jennifer & Kitty
@JaneThomas58
@JaneThomas58 5 лет назад
I’ll look at those. Paracord may be too casual for his style. I have looked at Pinterest but some of it is a bit too “Boho” I think.
