This felt like sitting down with a good friend and having a lovely conversation while drinking tea (I had coffee :)) and sharing ideas in a safe, creative space. I LOVE your videos, Basia! I love your bright and positive look on the creative process. I too procrastinate when I feel intimidated by trying something new. This video has put me in the mood to try something new today! Thank you, Basia! 🥰

Aww it means the world to me, love! Thank you so much for such a sweet and encouraging comment ❤️ I love making these vlogs, but sometimes I'm not sure if what I talk about is even interesting 🙈 I'm so happy to hear that you enjoyed it and find it valuable. However, there's one solid improvement I need to make and that's the microphone! I just purchased a portable mic and I can't wait to use it in the next video. I'm sure it will improve the quality of the sound, so that hopefully the videos will be nicer to watch 😍❤️

Hiya Lady Stardust, So, less procrastinating and more doing??? A lesson I need to learn, too. Now, about Smith Little Torch? And a few other things... Oh, it's so good to be doing comments again. Thank you for a wonderful video, Basia; it is up to your standard. Not over long, bright, informative, and made with a love of imparting knowledge and sharing the joy of making. I finish treatment next Wednesday and look forward to making the gold Christmas presents I told you about. I've some earrings to make this weekend for the tec ladies at Radiotherapy. Your collection of gems always fills me with envy; you have a great eye for a perfect buy. I've seen from the comments that you are inspiring as many people as ever to join us; well done!!! Stay safe, dear Basia, Love Steve xxx

Hi Steve!! So happy to see you here again, we've missed you! ❤ I hope the commenting issue is solved, I have no idea what could've caused it. So happy you enjoyed this video! I had fun making it and I hoped you would enjoy it too. I never know if the scenes and subjects I choose to show and share in the video will be interesting for others, but seeing the current views and reading comments, I think it's safe to say that this one was well received ❤ :)) I'm looking forward to seeing the gold present you will make! I hope you can share it with me, maybe a photo? I'm curios to see how it turns out :) Thank you so much for watching and being here, as always, it means a lot and brightens my day. Stay safe, Steve xx

You have such a lovely workshop. I love the way you store and display your stones for designing. I usually just place mine out on a table and then back into a box when I'm done. Your way seems to protect your stones in storage much better. While I don't do as much metalsmithing these days as I have in the past, it was a delight to watch another smith at work. I could feel my saw in my hands as you worked with yours. I look forward to seeing more of your videos.

I had never left a comment on a RU-vid video until now. Your videos are exceptionally wonderful, and I couldn't resist leaving a comment. Your authenticity and positive energy are truly heartwarming. I have recently started crafting metal jewelry and dream of turning it into a business one day. However, I often face challenges and make mistakes, leading to moments of self-doubt where I question my ideas. When I see your creations, they are works of art, and I feel that I might never be able to achieve that level of craftsmanship. However, your videos provide a glimpse into your honest and ongoing learning process, reminding us that learning is a lifelong endeavor, and it's perfectly acceptable to stumble along the way while continuing to forge ahead. Embracing mistakes and moving forward is part of the process. Thank you very much for being a genuine source of motivation and inspiration, and for sharing your knowledge freely. 🤗

oh wow, thank you!! This means the world to me! I appreciate your kind words and encouragament. Yes, absolutely, it is a constant learning process and I'm nowhere near perfection. I make a lot of mistakes and sometimes things don't turn out the way I want or how they should. It's a long process, so I always try to focus on the joy and small steps :) I encourage others to do the same, have fun, experiment, practice and not let the frustration get to you. They way you said it is just perfect, I wish everyone could read it ❤ Thank you again ❤

Oh yes, good light makes a massive difference. My previous space that I had for about a year before this one was very dark and sad. I did what I could using artificial light, so it doesn't look so bad on the videos. But this one was a game changer, bright space makes you feel entirely different and so much better ❤ I hope you will be able to get a lovely space for yourself too! ❤

I love watching your channel, I’ve been making jewellery for 10 years, it’s something I can do even when my medical “crap” (sorry it’s one of those days and that covers it) is playing up. I’ve always wanted to do silver smithing but no space, can’t afford the tools and no outlet! I’m not a front room type I’m a back room type, u can make and create but business brain I don’t have sadly. I’ve tried etsy and local gumtree even but no luck, people want handmade for pennies not it’s worth round this area. So I enjoy watching you and your process. He he you just talked about intimidate yep I get intimidated easily lol! If all else fails and no clean containers I’ve used the lids of spray cans they make great cups! I love how you show the “how do I do this” process, like me when all else fails reach for utube 😊😊😊❤❤❤❤ id love to see you do a Phoenix sometime, your art skills are enviable 🥰🥰

I'm so sorry your medical issues have been acting up :(( I hope you're feeling better now and able to rest and relax. I agree, silversmithing is quite pricey when it comes to tools, and it's hard to skip some of them. The business side of things - I completely understand you here! I'm the same. Although I do enjoy some parts of it, it is really tiring and difficult at times and I would prefer to jjst focus on making jewellery and videos and skip all of the marketing, admin, taxes, sales, customer service, social media and all that stuff haha Thank you for your kind words and encouragement, it means a lot! I'm very happy you've been enjoying my videos ❤❤❤

Ahh, thank you, Michelle!! Oh yes, it's true - sometimes having help from a friend can save so much time! I think what I did wrong here was letting the water cool off too much, that's why I had these white elements left in the protoplast. I think using boiling water would've been the best, just being careful not to get burned :)
@aumi.jewels
@aumi.jewels 7 месяцев назад
@@TheArtOfMetalsmithing I think that was the problem too… I make sure the protoplast stays in the hot water until it turns completely clear. Then take some tweezers or tongs and pull the protoplast from the hot water so you don’t burn your fingers. But still, I think you did a great job.🤗Michelle

Great video ladies! Gosh can so much resonate with what you are saying! At the end of the day also I hope your RU-vid channels get some revenue as well to compensate for lower than desired income from jewerly making. I watched a video by a few well known furniture artists and she was saying they came to the conclusion that donating furniture and focusing on creating great RU-vid content works better for them rather than trying to make great sales of that refinished furniture. In Canada a single person needs to make at least cad$ 5-6K per month to be able to cover basic expenses and have some budget for developing business (or paying back loans). Min wage is $17-18/h, bread costs $5-9 per loaf, an average modest lunch out would cost at least cad$25-35, min $18-20, often without drinks and desert, it is crazy. The challenging part of jewelry making for me was that it took me time to figure out what I like designing, making and recreating and what is easier to sell, so through a few years I accumulated some supplies that do not match the collection. Might either sell or make some tutorials with them but since they are not the priority keep putting it off… Anyways, it would be fun to meet you both in person some day!

I have been thinking of getting into jewellery making recently as it looks like something I would really enjoy. I find it very hard to start leaning something new as I always doubt myself before I start, but your videos have inspired me to give it a go! I always bring the water to a boil, transfer it to a bowl and put the plastic in immediately. Sometimes it takes a little bit to melt all the way but it does eventually go all clear. When you are removing your piece and want to store it for fuse, try to break it into pieces that are as small as you can get them so they heat easier

Another fabulous video! Can I ask you which gravers you think are most useful to but to start with? I’ve been looking at them online for months but have no idea which shape and size would be most useful. I am hoping to learn to flush set some small stones and make star bursts radiating out around them. Just got some protoplast myself as well. Perfect timing! 😀
@TheArtOfMetalsmithing
@TheArtOfMetalsmithing 7 месяцев назад
Thank you! So happy you enjoyed it :) Oh, with the gravers, I only just started using them, so I may not be able to answer that question yet. I struggled to choose too, so I know the feeling. In the end, I went with three shapes (I'm not entirely sure how to describe them), but one is sharp (like V), one is slightly rounded and one is more of a square shape. As for the sizes, I'm sorry, but I still don't have much idea - I think the ones I got were the most common ones. But as I'm nly just getting started with them, I will learn and then I will be able to share more :)

You're very welcome! Thank you :) The png extension is like jpg, but it offers better quality, it's usually used with graphics and digital images to retain the quality. But it's still an image you can use any way you like. As for the ball vice, it's very hard to find a cheap one. These tools are actually pricey. If they're super cheap, then it means there;s something wrong with them. I got mine from Vevor if I remember correctly. Their tools are of good quality, while an a cheaper side.

Where did you find that ball vice? And do you have a link so you can get credit for my purchase as a referal ? I have been shopping for one and that one you have looks perfect !

Thank you, that's very sweet of you to ask about the referral link 🙏 I appreciate it a lot! I don't have a link for this ball vice, as I bought it several years ago, but I think it was on Ebay. I'm pretty sure that the brand is Vevor (I think they also have an Amazon store now and a website). After researching the ball vices, this one was within my budget (it's an expensive tool in general) and the brand is ok. I knew of their other tools, so I decided to give it a go. It's not ideal and it's very heavy, but it works!

Can i ask what the difference is between hard and soft solder? And which would you recommend for Sterling Silver rings? Also i am looking towards the solder paste would you recommend this for beginners?
@TheArtOfMetalsmithing
@TheArtOfMetalsmithing 6 месяцев назад
All silver solder can be used with silver, for rings a hard solder would be best. Usually, it's best to use hard solder in general, when there aren't many soler joints. But if there are, then you go through the hard, medium and easy solder to make sure the previous joints won't melt when you solder the next one. You start with hard and finish with easy solder. I hope it helps! 🙏

Is not easy, I am learning to saw and is so hard specially when I change direction.😢
@TheArtOfMetalsmithing
@TheArtOfMetalsmithing 5 месяцев назад
It takes time! So don't worry and go easy. Practice and focus on a smooth and steady movement, don't twist your frame when changing direction and making turns - make sure to slowly turn your metal while keeping the saw frame wertically in one position. Check out my video here, in which I share sawing tips to avoid breaking the blades: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-SIHvlJ2gxpw.htmlsi=8w9VuoThE5RYkOzr
