There really is, believe me! I just bought some in Stockholm. It is prepared from the root of the liquorice plant - I'm really not trying to be a smart-ass but you can read this up on wikipedia or other internet sources. Not widely known in the anglo-saxon world admittedly, but it is in the liquorice countries (Holland and Scandinavia) or specialist shops/eBay. You also get liquorice root extract as powder. These things are expensive, but very concentrated so you probably wouldn't need a lot.

Actually the flavor is fennel, look it up… Fennel seed… You can grind it and use the fine powder or you can press it and get the oil out of it and use that for flavor.

OMG! Do you know how much I love black licorice, not that you would even care but I can't wait to try this recipe. I just watched your jelly bean video and I seen this video and wondering how hard it would be to make licorice jelly beans. :) my two favorite candies all rolled into one tiny little bean. I had just found Anise flavoring in our supermarket a week ago and had not seen it previously so I picked it up not having a recipe for this so now that I do I will be making it this evening.

Anise /ˈænɪs/, Pimpinella anisum, also called aniseed, is a flowering plant in the family Apiaceae native to the eastern Mediterranean region and Southwest Asia. Its flavor has similarities with some other spices, such as star anise, fennel, and liquorice.

Real licorice is made from some or all of these ingredients- black strap molasses, licorice root extract (which is much sweeter than sugar), coconut oil, sea salt, anise oil and wheat flour. . Unfortunately the European and scandinavian companies who make the best Licorice in the world will not divulge their recipes and process!

My grandmother would make it. It isn't rocket science. What he's making is licorice flavored caramel ...(sans the "anus" extract) get some licorice roots and crush them a bit; steep them in water until you have a strong liquorice tea, cool and strain. Make a syrup with light molasses (or a some black strap with blue label Karo) combine this with your tea, a good pinch of salt & boil for about five minutes---slowly sift in a bit of cake flour and cook the slurry until it's quite thick. You can add some anise, if you'd like, but if you've used good licorice roots, you will have a candy with a strong licorice taste. Anyhoo, add a few pats of butter, stir in and let your candy blob cool enough so that you can handle it without getting burnt. Knead your candy with buttered hands and then roll out and twist, or press with a large button, or v. small cookie cutter. Then leave it on waxed paper loosely covered for an hour or two, then store in an airtight container. The firmness of your licorice will depend on if your syrup is boiled to softball, or firmball stage. Also, don't overdo it with the flour, or fail to cook off the rawness.

@@magnificent6668 Thank you so much for your guidance. I have absolutely all the ingredients and tools. Oh boy am I excited! I used to have a pasta maker attachment for my stand mixer. It could extrude hollow elbow tubes. But I have tons of canape cutters, and maybe if you roll it out thinly, dust it and make a rolled up roll to crosscut slice thinly, it could resemble "shoe lace" strips.

@@chass5438 $2.99 is not expensive. You just have to appropriate funds. For example if you went out to a bar to have one pint of good craft beer it would cost you at least $7 plus tip. Did you go out for a pint of beer tonight? No? Well then you can now afford two bags of licorice. Do you see how that works? Here’s another one. Do you think $2.99 is too expensive to spend on licorice? There are people who spend over $100 every night on cocaine, it ruins their health and usually ruins their career. (Perhaps dental care caused a ban on them.) - What would you suggest might be the best way to vary either the quantities of ingredients, or the method of cooking, to make the result really chewy-tough. - I will make a die (shaped tube) that extrudes the licorice into cords and straps. Have you or anyone ever done that? The shape greatly affects the eating experience. - I will die happy if I can make really good licorice straps.

What could I use as a substitute for corn syrup? Great video, by the way. :)

Glucose syrup or Lyles golden syrup....... they have the same chemical make up and help in preventing the sugar crystallizing. Regular corn syrup is not to be confused with the "High fructose corn syrup"... different thing all together...

How do we go about making, say, strawberry liquorice? would you just substitute the anise extract with flavouring?
