I trained Bill Walker 3+ years ago when I worked for Extreme Professional Training here in Vernon, BC. Bill finished his training on Thursday in Vernon, BC and the next Wednesday was working in Grande Prairie, AB, Canada in the oil field.
As he states in the interview: 5 days after getting his licence he was pulling Super 'B' trailers through the bush.
Super 'B' trailers are 2 trailers behind a transport truck that weigh out at 63,500kg (140,000lbs).
Bill went to the oil field to earn money for his retirement. As he states: "the only reason that anyone goes to the oil patch, is to make money!"
Bill worked in the oil patch for almost 3 years and stuck to his plan. His plan worked out and he retired. By the time this description of the video is written, Bill and his wife Lulu will be in Mexico sipping Mai Tais on the beach.
In this interview, Bill talks about the pitfalls, challenges and long hours associated with driving truck in the oil patch.

I was 6 feet tall when I got out of the picker truck and by the time I got to the cook shack I was 7 feet tall. All that friggin mud. I didn't mind the -40 weather at all, but that friggin mud !!!!!

Drove in the patch for 22 years hauling drilling mud and yup you learn to drive in a hurry,last 10 years were Hyw driving pulling Super-B from warehouse to warehouse from northern B.C to South Western Saskatchewan, based in Red Deer Alberta

I'm happy to be heading back to Alberta in april.... absolutely no work here in pei. Worst mistake I made career wise was to quit and go back to school and make 16 an hour here on pei where in Alberta I was make over double the hours and twice the rate. NO WORK ON PRINCE EDWARD ISLAND

What the tank capacity and mpg? Probably grueling never making it past 25mph. Sounds like you retired him more than trained him. How much is lots? How much is lots? Probably more if they paid by the ounce of dirt you'd get in your face. Rather than. Like. Work. Or something. Is there some kind of bridge formula they look at before driving over frozen water or you just go all guns blazing, cigar and whiskey?

Sometimes you just need to think what money is worth. Dangerous jobs exist because there are always people who are willing to do those. Reckless and stupid. We need to draw a line somewhere. This job is beyond that line. Fear for your life every day? No money is worth that.

Smart Drive Test I think if any one who plan working in a oil patch they should have a plan for when the work slow down it would be a good idea that way they have work outside of the oil patch than once the oil patch gets busy again go up and do the work if they do it for like 5 let’s they would have a of money in the bank if they don’t buy any toys during that time

For a work permit the you will first need to meet the criteria listed on the Canadian immigration website: www.cic.gc.ca/english/work/apply-who-eligible.asp If you meet this criteria, then you can proceed with a Work Permit application. As you may or may not be aware, this will involve extensive paperwork and could take a significant amount of time. This is fascinating. It is alluded to in the video, but overall, in hindsight, how would Bill judge the hardship to reward aspect, being a trucker in the oil-patch? So all truckers work on-call, or it some? Love your trucking videos.

My wonderful (common law) wife and I just moved to Grande Prairie 6 months ago so she could be closer to family... nothing really has gone right since we got here, I'm nearly 50, only have a grade 9 education, nearly 20K in debt to the bank, don't have a job yet (she just got one but it's a 3 week temporary job for the county that will hopefully lead to something better) I'm battling depression and an inferiority complex cultivated since childhood, being a survivor of sexual abuse as a child (like many people) and an adopted family that disowned me after I revealed that it happened I've never been able to achieve anything substantial. I have a month left of employment benefits and am just starting to try and get a class 3 drivers licence, no semi, just 3 axle with no air brake, an accidental driving offence in Manitoba is preventing me from getting a class 1, wish me luck.

I've never really had much in life material or finance wise, but I'm a bit of a minimalist, I don't need material possessions, I don't drink or do drugs an have on many occasions have been able to put away money from 5K -40K but always get depressed or annoyed with a job, quit and just hide from society and slowly drain my savings till I have to get a new job again. If only I could get a job in the oil fields for a few years, someone like me could live comfortably on the interest from 250K, MOST people couldn't what with their mortgage, vehicle payments, kids and fancy dinners and gifts for wifey, but I really don't have those financial responsibilities. good video.

Very honest video from a great set of gentlemen explaining the realities of trucking in the northern region of Canada. I just got my 1A in Saskatchewan at 25 years old, I’ve ran heavy equipment for 6 years and thought to expand my horizons. Some people are not the same and cannot carry the burdens these jobs bring on you. You give me clarity on the facts of driving a truck. Also your videos helped me understand air brakes a lot better. Thank you for making the new generation of drivers a little more confident and humble.

I’m fourteen and I’ve watched this video 5 times in the same week already and let me tell you I’ve been around Semi trucks all my life and this video shined a light on the dark oil industry and it’s crap like this that keeps my head on straight to what jobs I gotta keep my eye on (I know I’m hard to understand I’m from a small in Atlantic Canada)

Even two years later, at 16 yrs old you should only be concerned about three things... (but I commend you, young man, for even being interested 👍🏻) 1) staying in school, and doing well until you graduate 2) being the best son you can possibly be to your parents 3) enjoying your childhood while you still have it, you'll NEVER get it back

I worked the oil feilds in North Dakota a few years and when I used to tell other drivers how the mud would come thru the wheel holes like a sausage making machine , they would look at me and laugh. Trucking in the mud was the funnest shit ever.

Hi kerry gordon - Thank you for your comment. My friend Bill had some health issues such as diabetes. I was surprised that he hauled flatdeck work for the most part. If Bill can do patch work, anyone can do it with the right attitude. All the best, Cheers Rick

@@smartdrivetest i dont believe for a second bill did any real oilfield hauling. I cant see bill dragging a winchline 5 ft. Sitting in a truck and hauling matting isn't what i would call oilfield hauling.

Well, here I am... 16 days before my Class 1 road test. I've had a Class 3-Q for 10 years, running dump trucks hauling heavy equipment & driving concrete mixers in Alberta. I did the written test, and I'm studying / taking a 3-day training course before I take the road test. I'm confident I can challenge the test and pass, with minimal formal training. Everything you've said has been either my experience as well, or exactly what I've heard transpires in the patch... It's rough work, but the pay is as good as it gets for a driver. 👍🏻

Smart Drive Test I had 12 years before going into the patch. If you have started off in the patch swamping or some other industry related job you have a better understanding of the conditions you will encounter but to throw someone in a truck green as grass is not safe to themselves or the other users of industrial roads. The industry has tried to address this issue with programs such as GODI ( General Oilfield Driver Inprovement) and Oilfield Haulers tickets. Turning a driver loose with only having a few days under their belt is a poor judgment on the company's part. We all pay for that in the industry. There's not a shortage in the patch it's a willingness to treat people better so they stay.
