Great thanks, anything we can do too help just ask. Best advice is keep it simple, just build something and ignore the rivet counters

_Thank You_ for letting me sit in with you as you build. As a young child, I would watch Dad as he would scratch-build buildings for his layouts, and sometimes I would help him hold something or some such. Lovely memories! AND add to this, your wonderful commentary and tutoring! Writing this from my spouse's ICU hospital room - hopefully when things settle-down, I will get to doing this myself. Cheers & Blessings from the USA!! 😊💜

You are an artist, you are a 3D artist, there are different types and skils in artist but non the less you are an artist. The fact that often the completed artwork incorporates completed models either buildings or trains is no less art. The artist simply tries to tie all the components together as one 3d artwork.

Great video, I’m starting out in model railways, I was interested when I was a kid but now I’ve got kids of my own I felt I would never have the time or patience so didn’t get involved……for some reason as soon as my 40th birthday came I decided to take the plunge 😝😝😝. I’ve built an 8x4 baseboard from things I’ve seen on YT! First hurdle I suppose but it proves how easy it is now with these videos. You’re doing a great job! Years ago you’d have to really teach yourself, in my experience model railway clubs (and this goes for experiences at bus rallies and railway events) are pretty cliquey and it doesn’t come across as friendly in many cases as a newcomer. This medium is so much easier and a gift. I could listen to you talking all day, very relaxed and natural and indeed ignore the trolls, they are people who haven’t got much going for them. This is a brilliant video and hopefully I’ll be able to build buildings soon (at present I’ve only got the baseboard!!) Thanks for posting and take care 👍🏼

You mentioned a tin of Beans being worth 20 grand. I was in Madrid a few years ago and saw a long piece of paper about 10ft x 3ft with a long line and a dot at the end, I think it was by Jason Pollock and it was worth millions. That to me is were art goes out of the window. As for the idiots they have nothing better to do, most of us love the stuff you do and appreciate that it is time you could be spending with family and friends. Thank you once again. Frank

Just a comment. if one is having trouble with lines and triangles, a T-square and some cheap drafting angles would be handy. Love what you are doing and your philosophy: keep it simple and get it started, inspiration for details comes later (or... plenty of time to muck it up later!). :)

Each of us models to a different level of complexity and no one has any right to disrespect what you have done. If the know better, let them create a channel and show us just how much greater they are. I love your work and the very practical approach taken. Cheers.

Hi, this gave me a massive flash back to when I was a kid, maybe 11-14 yo. I used to make tanks, jeeps and artillery guns (for both the allies and Germans) etc from cardboard and coloured them in camouflage patterns using my felt tip pens. It would take quite some time but I enjoyed making them as much as what followed. I would then play with them along with my numerous plastic soldiers and a few brought cannons that fired used match sticks. To add extra realism I some times had a big battle finale which would involve setting my tanks etc on fire 🔥 That part took place in the garden 😁 Guess I knew why to find the matches in the kitchen lol.

Great stuff. A little tip I have discoverd regarding 'glazing.' Plain clear plastic makes it too easy to see into model buildings and doesn't look real. Lightly smokey, or grey plastic looks a lot more realistic. If you are lucky enough to be able to print on laser or inkjet printable acetate, you can experiment with different grades/darkness of grey tone, plus able to print curtains, posters, stickers etc that may appear in - say - a shop window. Always mount it with the printed side inside the model. I've even replaced the glazing in some carriages this way with printed 'No Smoking' 'First Class' etc signs too.

I was very impressed with your buildings construction tools and techniques i find that you are immensely practical and achieve a lot in a short time. May i offer some of my experiences with sharp blades, i personally hate blades that flex which in effect actually reduces your tactile sense of control, for years i was a compulsive scalpel user, and nearly lost my eye sight on occasions when i applied too much pressure the blades would break flinging shrapnel pinging pass my eyes. Now i know how to resharpen any blade no need to keep buying new ones. But i tend to like craft knives similar to the Exacto type my but my preference is for the "Fiskars" branded version and keeping the blades protruding as short as is practical, and to add further control to any possible blade slippage in the craft knives jaws, i insert some small pieces of wet and dry to further grip the blade from slipping around in the knives jaws. i love your buildings they are as important as the trains themselves, keep up the great advice. 👍👍👌😊

Great video and I've picked up some excellent tips. I will definitely be using the y shaped cut on doors and windows as I have had some accidents resulting in New sections having to be created. Also, really liked the window idea. I normally buy windows but for a recent project I had to have them custom made. I have another 'unique' building coming up and this method for doing the windows will save me a packet!

I love how you have produced this little building. For paper, you could also check out some of the scrapbooking papers. They come in a vast variety of designs and patterns, sometimes in books of them and they can be found in thrift stores (check the book section) sometimes for a reasonable price. I agree wholly with you about the "art-crafts-modeling" comments you made. Some "crafts" or "models" I've seen are gorgeous works of art but aren't called "art" because they don't fit into some made-up description of what it should be. Some "art" I've seen is nothing more than paint sloppily rolled onto a canvas and there is nothing aesthetically pleasing about it, but some "critic" says it's wonderful and makes something up about it and it goes into a gallery. I don't agree with it, but I've seen it often and it always really bothers me.
