I never throw anything away that can be used or repurposed for my railroad. I save cereal boxes and beer cartons as they work very well for card stock. For even stronger card stock I glue them together. For HO scale gutter downspouts I use those little black hollow plastic coffee stirrers. Cheers - eastern TN

Well, it's now 6 years later and I'm revisiting old videos to brush up on my skills and techniques for card stock modeling. I've built 2 HO card stock models and they turned out quite good. Now that I've acquired enough Lionel 027 railroad engines and rolling stock to make a layout, I'm beginning to model in O scale. I've also started another HO scratch build and you've given me an idea for completing my build. I've picked up a tip from MarklinOfSweeden for making corrugated metal in HO scale. It requires a piece of plastic HO scale corrugated plastic to use as a mold. Simply cover a piece with a rather thick coating of Elmer's glue and wait for it to completely dry. Then just peel off the sheet of Elmer's glue and paint as you would paint the plastic. That way you don't have to buy a plastic piece every time you want to make corrugated steel. Another tip I've picked up for O scale corrugated card stock is to get the tooth paste squeezer from Amazon for $10.00 and run the card stock through it to add the 3D effect to the card stock. Cheers mate, from a old modeler in eastern TN

I have to really laugh about something here... I watched this video with deep interest from start to finish. The builder said he has been building models for about 40-some years. I have been building the same type of buildings for about 50 years. (I am in the United States) I was totally fascinated that here was a guy, in Britain, who over the years has developed all sorts of skills and ways of doing things with his modeling and while he was developing all those skills in Britain, I was doing the exact same thing here in America. I am amazed at how many of his steps are the exact same as I developed over time. We BOTH developed similar skills and methods over time by trial and error. IF we knew each other over the years, I can imagine that our trading of knowledge would affect our craft but here we both have done, virtually the same thing and never knew each other! The only basic difference that I see is that your models have a clear "British" style to them while my buildings have a clear "American style." (window style for example). I really enjoyed the video very much. Regards to a fellow modeler from America!

Hi Ronald and thanks so much for your lovely message. In the 70's each country planned a supersonic airliner, when the plans came out they all looked the same, if you have a finite set of materials and criteria I guess you end up doing things a similar way. I'd love to see some pics of your models. Best wishes to you Mike

A small craft stick will also do the job of smoothing the brick paper on the edges of the doors, windows and other openings so that you do not have to use a razor knife or box cutter for smoothing the brick paper around those edges. Also, I would have used a craft stick between the peaks of the gables so that the peak of the roof does not sag over time. I have built some model structures and always put foam or heavy cardboard in that area for roof support. A short section of drinking straw or small marker tube from a dry marker can also be used as a greebley on the top of the chimney so that it looks like a chimney from early last century or earlier.

Hi there BMR, maybe I've missed it, but I am looking for a description of how to make two roofs connect at a right angle, as you did in your station building. I usually use one piece scored in the middle and folded
@diederts9899
@diederts9899 6 лет назад
Thank you for responding, but that's not quite what I mean to ask. As you describe in your reply, a roof is normally a rectangle folded in half, with the fold being the top of the roof. However, when two roofs meet, the shape of one of them is no longer a rectangle. One side, rather than being a straight line, is a triangle, sloping backwards from the top of the roof. My question is: how do you determine the shape of that triangle: do you have a trick for it, do you calculate it, do you guess it and just vary the height of the roof a bit, or ...?
@BudgetModelRailways

Best advice is keep it simple. A loop with sidings is a lot of fun if you want to see trains go round. A simple inglenook is great for shunting, or a passing loop with a few sidings. Peco make a very good plans book, and the anyrail free planning software is good. The real starting point is how much space you have.

Not sure what it's called in the US but if you can find a picture framers then I'm sure they could tell you and sell you a few off cuts. I got wagon weights for free by just asking a roofing company if they could let me have the lead off cuts they didn't need. It's amazing what you can get just by asking.

Instead of measuring the end wall s on the paper (sand?) Why not just rest the house ends on the paper and draw the outline of the wall onto the (sand) paper?

What material did you use to build the skeleton (the external walls) of the house at the beginning of the video?
@BudgetModelRailways
@BudgetModelRailways 4 года назад
Mounting board off cuts from a picture framers, but any suitable card will do, about 1-2mm thick

Always cardboard?

I always work in cardboard, but you could use styrene sheet etc, but its a lot more expensive

Hi there ....just curious how do you to get your sizing ... for various buildings ...hope you don't mind me asking ....fred
@BudgetModelRailways
@BudgetModelRailways 7 лет назад
Hi Fred, good question thanks for asking. I use 4mm to a foot as a guide so a door is 25mm by 12mm ish etc, but I work on the small size as we use compression everywhere else on model railways, so should on buildings, esp on my small layouts. Another good source of dimensions are existing models and plans that sometimes appear in the press etc. Hope this helps. Mike

I have tried a half dozen times to sign up for the newsletter and nothing happens. Won't it go outside the UK?

Hi Dale, really sorry, due to the change in EU law on database etc we had to stop producing the newsletter, it would have meant emailing all 400 subscribers and then re entering them all on the system plus lots of other hoops to jump through

Okay, Mike, thanks for getting back to me so promptly. I will try to find the video of the one in question. I have subscribed to your channel and I will search for it if my Raspberry Pi will work long enough. I use my Raspberry Pi 3 for my desktop computer now since I finally got everything set up and working. Really love your videos, so keep ´em coming, mate. Cheers! (Sometimes I hate this bluetooth keyboard I´m using. But then it frees up one USB port on my Raspberry Pi.) :-)

We will do a video on making basic buildings once we get the monumental task of the exhibition layout finished! We plan to do two or three on how to make various things as we know they are popular, hopefully in a couple of months time. Getting quite stressed about finishing the layout on time now !!?
@wrustylane

Good luck with finishing the layout. I´ll keep on watching your channel for further updates. Thanks for your prompt reply. I now feel like I have a friend ¨across the pond¨ with similar interests. As soon as I can get my temp. layout and unbox some of my models (rolling stock) I will take a few pictures for you so you can include them in your newsletter. I brought home some large boxes from work that have 12 smaller ¨shoe¨ boxes inside and I plan to wrap four models and put them into a single box. That way I can pack up at least 48 models per large box.
