Your soap making videos are the best of all that I have watched! I made soap with lye that I dripped from ashes when I lived in Northern Canada 40 years ago. My soap has always had iffy results (not always solidifying). Didn’t”t know different oils had different saponification values . I just mixed lye and fat of some kind and hoped for the best. I made several batches of soap using your recipe with coconut oil and olive oil for family and colleagues at school this year and got rave reviews and requests for more. Thank you so much . Your videos are great! I built my own two story log house in Canada in 1972 after I graduated from college. I bought 80 acres with tip money from waitressing during college. I felled the trees and peeled them all. Then dragged them to spot I was going to build by hand with one other person and some with my Volkswagen pick-up. Held two together with log dogs and ran a chainsaw between them to flatten the sides so they would fit together better. Used moss I gathered from the forest to insulate between them. I also built a bermed house was from cement block in Washington with just my two small children (5 and 6) . Had the house I live in now built on acreage. Am now starting the 4th homestead and plan on doing most of the work myself. That 5 year old is now 41 and she and I will be building her house and my house with help from some other family members (including her 5 and 7 year old ) .Again thank you for your wonderful uplifting can do videos !

Years ago I was down at the hardware store and they had a pallet of wild bird seed that was near the expiration date and they marked it down to 25cents a bag(twenty pound bags) I bought most of the pallet and took it home. I had two dozen production reds and was getting around a dozen eggs a day. I started putting out one bag of wild bird seed in the feeder each day and almost immediately I was getting 23 or 24 eggs a day every day until after I had used up all the wild bird seed.

Hello Becky and to everyone else. I am a home brewer and one thing I discovered a couple of years ago is that you will never, 100% completely wash all of the ferment-able sugars out of your mashing grains (barley or wheat.) With that said, I had about 6 chickens at the time and would get on average, 4 to 6 eggs. When I stopped throwing away my grist (grains after mashing) and feeding it to my chickens I noticed that in the span of about 5 or 6 days they stated laying between 6 and 8 eggs a day. I had started to think if I was skipping days of collecting or maybe the chickens where laying else where then bring the best back to the nest. Once they had ran out of the grist, they would return to laying between 4 and 6 eggs daily as opposed to 6+ (one a few occasion I got 10 eggs in one day!) I was perplexed as to what was going on, hell, even thought my kids where playing a joke on me and replacing eggs back into the nest lol. A good friend of mine who happened to be an avid brewer and chemist told me basically, all of the residual sugars still resident in the grains have already been broken down from their original starch molecules into simple sugars. meaning that since the chickens had less energy to spend on breaking down the starches to sugars and where already receiving the sugars through this form, which resulted in more eggs since they didn't have to work as hard. So if any of your are home brewers and have chickens. Don't through your grist away! Feed it to your chickens or any other live stock you have. They benefit greatly from the residual sugars! Oh and don't malt grains just feed your chickens malted grains. The process is to lengthy and cost wise, you will have probably invested much more into it's resources. I malt my own grains so I know.

I had forgotten to mention that just like Becky said, I do have my chickens on a continuous supply of calcium. I use a combination of oyster shells and my well water. I live in Missouri and if you have well water in MO, you'll know how frustratingly hard in calcium this water is. It is a benefit to my chickens though.

I crush and feed the egg shells back to my girls. Layer pellets, black oil sunflower seeds, scratch and greens ( I walk around the yard and pulls weeds... the girls love a ‘weed salad’ a few times a week. They get kitchen scraps too. When I roast something with bones , they get to pick the bones clean ( be sure to clean up so they don’t attract predators)

Becky! We are doing it! We’re in our 60’s, and as of almost three weeks ago, we’ve taken the plunge with 8 hens; 2 barred rock, 2 golden comet, and 4 australorps. We bought them as adults and they average around five-six years old. We’ve been feeding your whole food recipe from day one. They were being fed more of a commercial, standard type feed with pellets, etc previously. We’re also adding in protein in the mornings. Question: they are not eating the black oil sunflower seeds nor are they eating the whole corn. Do you think it’s possible they are too set in their ways to begin on a new feed at this stage in the game? We don’t want to give up on this too soon, but we also want to be mindful that they need to be getting enough nutrition. They are also free ranging in a very large paddock, and getting plenty of opportunity for insects, bugs, worms, etc. We’d sure appreciate hearing back from you, but realize you can’t answer everyone’s questions. Thanks much for all you do! By the way, one of our Australorps is named for you; “Miss Becky.” 🥰

I like that you portray egg laying schedules realistically so people don't watch the video and then expect getting an egg from every chicken every single day. One thought though regarding providing calcium. Since egg shells contain a lot of calcium, doesn't that mean that you can in theory just crush up the shells for all the eggs you eat and feed them back to the chickens so they get recycled? That way you can save some money and it also doubles as a form of 'grit'.
@BeckysHomestead

I think my chickens are happy but they aren’t laying eggs? What should I do. Also I’m a bit confused about chicken protein because I have been told they can get diseases from meat. Hi Becky, Loved this video. I gave cast kibble (Whiskas) to my chicken. One day only and they had an ugly diarrhea problem. Was it the cat food? How do I treat them?

Becky, please help me. Should I feed my chickens all these plus the food that I get from the store? Or are these 3 suggestions to be used as a replacement of the chicken food you can buy at stores like IFA, etc.??
