Today we are making Soleseife soap. Soleseife translates as "Brine soap" and a brine solution is what we are using today! Traditionally sea water is used to create this soap, however this can be hard to get assessed nowadays and not everyone lives close enough to the sea to be able to use it. Therefore, a simple solution of tap water and sea salt at a ratio of 3.5g of sea salt to every 96.5g water (total weight 100g) can be used to create a solution to use in place of sea water if you wish.
We are sharing our recipe and tutorial with you for this really lovely, fresh peppermint soap, though you can omit or substitute the essential oil if you wish to. We just feel that the peppermint really helps to capture the fresh feeling of being on the beach!
This palm oil free soap is made with natural ingredients and essential oils and is a relatively quick and easy soap to create.
In our video, we make 5 loaves of this soap, however, the ingredients listed below are enough to fill one loaf mould the same size as ours, as we appreciate that not everyone wants or needs to make 5 loaves of soap! If you wish to have a go at this design, you will need the following ingredients:
109g Sodium Hydroxide
200g Sea Water (or brine solution made using 7g sea salt and 193g tap water)
340g Olive Oil
99g Sweet Almond Oil
57g Castor Oil
184g Coconut Oil
75g Shea Butter
38g Cocoa Butter
15g Peppermint Essential Oil

What is the benefits of using salt water? Only asking as I have not hard of it before. Thank you from NZ

It can contribute to a slightly harder, longer lasting bar of soap. You also get the benefit of there being additional minerals in the soap from the sea salt, which many people like. We have a number of customers who tell us that our salt water bars help with their problem skin. As a seller, we can't claim that it will help problem skin or anything like that, but it is nice when our customers give this feedback to us!

Questions: Do you boil the tap water and sea salt solution before combining the lye? Also can you use distilled water and sea salt ?

Hello, so if I just got salt water today from Port Aransas, Texas, you suggest I filter it? Wouldn’t boiling it remove the salt content? Thank you for the video.
@ArreisMorsCI
@ArreisMorsCI 3 года назад
NO, boiling salt water only evaporates water, not salt. As water evaporates, the salt percentage would actually be increased. Example : If you start with 1cup water and 1tbsp salt and boiled until you have 3/4cup water, you still have 1tbsp salt. Your water will have a higher concentration of salt:water. I would strongly suggest just using tap water and adding sea salt as Ann suggested. Think of all the chemicals, debris, and waste that goes into the ocean. At least tap water has been through a treatment facility and is safe for consumption, sea water is not. Would you drink ocean water, even if you boiled it??? I wouldn't, and I live ocean front. I always use tap water for my soap.

@@ArreisMorsCI I don’t use tap water for my soap, but Berkey filtered well water. I have no DOS or any other issues whatsoever. If I had no other water to drink, yes I would drink it.

@@Purplemountainsoaps fair enough. I don't have well water, but our tap water is very nice for drinking and the ph is 5.7 with a ppm of 47. I have a tester myself for my personal growing purposes, so I need to know these numbers. I have no issues with my tap water for soaping or for lather with cp soaps, mine or others.

As Cindy says, boiling will actually slightly increase the percentage of salt in the water for the reasons she has already given. I personally do make these bars for my family with sea water. The reason being that we collect the water from a beach with "excellent" graded sea water and this is sea water that over summer we are happy to bathe in. My own view is that if I am happy for myself and my Children to spend a prolonged period actually swimming in the water then I am happy to use it in my soaps where the lye will kill off almost anything nasty lurking in the water! That said, I feel strongly that people should do whatever they feel comfortable with, so if you would rather use the tap water/sea salt method then there is absolutely nothing wrong with doing it that way either :-)

@@TheSussexHandmadeSoapCompany I would use the sea water where my mom lives, but NOT where I live... some houses allow their grey water to drain out... YUCK! My mother is huge advocate for nature and preserves as much as possible. She even gathered fresh seaweed for my soap making!!!

Why is your soap batter so liquid? Mine is just thick enough to be difficult to pour and I don’t get a nice even surface.

Does this lather in seawater?
@TheSussexHandmadeSoapCompany

Yes, we find the lather to be rich and creamy rather than bubbly, but it does lather well.
