Among my friends and family, this soap is famous! Everybody loves it. It’s my ‘soleseife’ or ‘brine soap’, made with fresh salt water from the sea, coloured with uplifting, oceanic colours and scented with a beautiful essential oil blend.
I collect the seawater to make this soap from North Stradbroke Island, just off the coast of Brisbane, Australia. North Stradbroke Island is part of Quandamooka country, and its traditional name is Minjerribah. I respectfully acknowledge the Quandamooka people and their elders, past, present and emerging. This beautiful country is my favourite place in the world, and I’ve been visiting the Island since I was a child.
Recipe details
Olive oil, 850g
Coconut oil, melted, 100g
Castor oil, 50g
Fresh salt water from the sea, 225g
Sodium hydroxide/caustic soda, 138g
(1000g oil batch, 3% superfat and 38% lye concentration) - if you’d like to learn more about calculating your own soap recipes or what these terms mean, please check out my video on that subject here • How to Formulate and C...
For the colours you will need titanium dioxide, blue and green micas (or whatever alternatives you prefer).
For the essential oil blend, I used (and it is divine!):
Bergamot, 24g
Patchouli, 8g
Peppermint, 8g
The essential oils in this soap recipe are calculated at 4% of the total soap recipe oil amount - 40g total.
Mould size
My mould used in this video is 37cm long, 7cm wide and 5.7cm deep.
In inches that is 14.5" long, 2 and 3/4" wide and 2 + 1/4" deep.
It holds 1.480kg of soap batter - just enough for this recipe.

New to soap making? This is important!
Sodium hydroxide and potassium hydroxide (lyes) used in soap making, in granular or flake form or in solution with water/other liquids, as well as raw soap batter, are highly corrosive and require careful and attentive handling and the proper use of personal protective equipment. Hello! I made cold process soap today with salt brine instead of distilled water, but used olive oil only. It took 36 hours to demold, it is not solid hard but it is very firm. I used liquids at a Lye ratio of 1.7:1 as per Zany's recipe. Now I just wait for the curing time.

Love yours videos and I am definitely going to try this recipe. Your colors and essential oils blend are amazing!! How do I know when to stop mixing after adding the lye concentration? Is it going to be bad if I blend too much? Thanks 🙂

Once it starts to thicken just slightly.

Hi Elly! I absolutely love your videos! I'm so inspired! Question: do the essential oils hold their scent similarly to fragrance oils? I have been using FO's but honestly, the scent is always fainter than I'd like and I'm wondering if I should switch to essential oils instead!
@EllysEverydaySoapMaking

About the same, but some last longer than others. Depends on how you blend them :)

Thank you so much for this video! I havent made soap on years. I live near by and will probably collect my sea water from Shorncliff. Would you mind sharing where you buy your essential oils and lye? I'd love to make some soap for friends

Oh wonderful Jillian! I live on the northside of Brisbane too. I get my lye from the supermarket (just caustic soda, White Tulip brand from Coles, Bunnings and Woolies has it too I think). My essential oils I get from www.escentialsofaustralia.com/ - they have the best prices!

Beautiful soaps, my favorite part is unfolding and cutting, too. What do you do with your little shavings? ❤️thank you for sharing

I just roll them up into a little ball or grate them for washing soap.

I really enjoy watching your soap making videos! I was wondering why you don't take the temperature of the lye water and the oils? All other tutorials seem to make that very important.

Hi Doug, I don't think it's as essential as other soap makers say it is. For simple, mostly liquid/soft oil soaps like mine, a room temperature process or 'heat transfer' process work just fine (room temp oils and hot lye). Temperature only becomes more important when your recipe contains hard oils, butters and waxes, but even then I don't take the temps. I'm quite happy with my results just estimating the temperatures :)

Hi, you can add salt to any soap recipe. Sea water is about 3% salt, so you can calculate how much you need from there. You can use any lye concentration. I think about 35% -40% lye concentration solution would be low enough water amount.

Hi, thank you! This soap wouldn't be the best for washing in sea water. I'd be using a coconut oil soap for that. I will be doing a video on that subject soon :)

Your tutorials are appreciated. I am a newbie. In this video you said you mixed water with the mica coloring. Do you recommend doing this for most soap making?

Sometimes I mix them with oil, and sometimes just mix them in dry. There are so many ways you can do it.
