I tried your recipe, it did work well, I did get some cracking so I added a teaspoon of glycerin, to your recipe. That completely eliminated any cracking. Thank you for sharing! Great tutorial, presented very well.
Glycerin is my go to for many things acrylic related. Good for you! ❤ Just use a few drops at a time until it goes the way that you want and know that it will extend the drying time, so keep that in mind as well.
Good to know I'm not the only person who refuses to pay a small fortune for embossing paste! Many thanks, Sam, for giving us an affordable alternative.
Ok I watched this 3 years ago and it just came up in my feed. So as a true fan of Sam I watched it again. I cannot believe I haven’t made this yet. So wonderful! Again Thank you Sam!
I tried your recipe a few weeks ago, and the paste texture has not changed since (and is working great). So now I am starting to built a stash with different colours. Thank you so much for sharing!!
Thanks so much for this! Thanks also to those who posted substitutions and suggestions for alterations! 🙏🏿 I’ve learned it’s a good idea to check RU-vid for DIY tutorials on high priced specialty craft supplies. _The Frugal Crafter_ and _AL John_ channels are must have channels for this. My latest score was a recipe for Wink of Stella pens. You can use water brushes for them or just keep the mixture in a small jar and apply it with a cheap paintbrush. The manufactured glitter pens start at $6 - $8 each in craft stores, but you can get one bottle or tube of iridescent medium for about $8-$10 to make your own and that one small container will probably last you a lifetime! You just add a few drops (use a pipette or dropper) to about one ounce (2 tablespoons) of water. Be careful not to make it too thick. If it’s too thick it won’t have the translucent sparkle you’re looking for. To improve the shelf life for your homemade glitter pens, it’s best to use distilled water or just be sure to make it in small batches, like the 1 ounce size. Like the texture paste, you can add color to them if you like.
In my experience, cornstarch creates a much wetter mixture than talc. That may be why this recipe needed more glue and no water to get the consistency you prefer. Thanks for your recipe and including these important details. 😊
Just getting started with trying to do crafts, so have been scouring the YT tutorials. Love your video and your beautiful cards. Hope to try this soon.
I have just found this video and really really enjoyed watching and learning such a valuable lesson. Thank you for sharing and I will be trying this almost straight away. Have to get the talc powder.💖
Hi Sam. Thank you so much for sharing your recipe. I have made 3 different colours so far:- a Prussian Blue with glitter, a Metallic Lilac and a Green with glitter ✨. When I used the blue, I think I was a bit heavy handed smoothing it on the stencil. But after the third one I seem to be getting the hang of it. Love the effect. Thanks again for the tutorial. X
Before I got to the end I had it saved to four separate playlists to make sure I don't miss it. CHEERS! Seriously. Low funds at mo to buy embossing paste so this is lifesaver. Big bag of cornflour in the press so time to paste.....
Scotland calling? Can’t thank you enough for sharing your video . I added fine glitter through to match the pastes I had already. Never too late in life to be starting a new hobby and this way makes it so much cheaper to make your own, took no time at all, . Love the boxes, great size. Can you please tell me where you purchased them Sam? 😀😀
Thank you so much for sharing this I'm always looking for a way to create a new embossing powder and things to add to our cards changed are good no matter how some people feel and creativity is where it's at for the person who making her own ideas and saving time and money and with prices going Up and up I think what you did is absolutely awesome 👍😎 I am not into staying in on we way of buying higher cost paints and stuff I can't afford it but I do believe if something works for some one great no harm no fowl I say but there are some who like to make a difference in their own experience like you me so yeah Thank you so much happy to see you took the risk made it yourself explain it and what materials to have and how to mix it can't ask for more thank you again you have a wonderful blessed day 🙏💕😀
I am so glad that Im not the only who remade other recipes and that they didnt work... I thought I was doing something wrong! Although, I have nust finiahed making ypur recipe and was very precise on measuring and mine is not as 'dry' as yours... I even added some extra talc powder. Im adsuming it may be from different brands of paint. But thanks for sharing, at least your recipe is usable, the others were awful!! Love your videos. Appreciate your hardwork
Hey Melody, thanks for message, it was very frustrating making others it turning out wrong! Glad you managed to get good results with mine. Yes I guess we are all using different products so that will effect the overall finish, but close is good. 😀
Thanks for this! I think if you're ever wanting to experiment to make a slightly more flexible paste... a bit more gel-like than chalky, I'd be inclined to try mixing in a bit of glycerine... and more importantly I'd try adding some Pledge/Future w. Finish Floor Polish (must be specifically that brand, and the type/formulation that is basically like pure liquid acrylic)... and if wanting to go even further in the gel direction & less paste-like, then I'd maybe try something in place of the cornstarch/talcum powder... or try mixing a blend maybe... with something that has more give & flexibility... like perhaps xanthan gum?? or maybe agar powder ground finely??.. dunno if those would work, but that's what I would try if wanting to experiment... (I suppose I'm also thinking about a Viva Decor Embossing Gel that I'd bought a whole tub of a while ago... only to have the whole thing dry out on me in seemingly no time flat! So not only am I trying to think of ways to revive it (if possible)... but also ways to perhaps make my own version and avoid spending so much money on a big store-bought tub of 'soon-to-be-pretty-paper-weight-in-a-jar'... lol)
I don't even know how I got here....but I'm so glad I did....okay, I was watching someone else making 'diy' embossing paste (but their method cost a lot more $$ or ££ than I have to spare)....but...I can get acrylic paint, white craft glue, baby powder, and even the little containers at "Dollarama" so, guess where I am heading my daughter's next day off from work! :)
Hi From Down Under I just tried making your white embossing paste and I used the last of my Corn Flower it was approximately 1/4 Cup … lol … instead of Baby Powder as I can’t find the only small bottle I have from when I tried making paste yrs ago … and it worked perfectly funny I have 2 sets of those containers I was keeping die cut pieces for shaker cards in … lol … As I have the white and pink as well I used the white one for the white paste and I decided to try it with Baking soda too so used a pink box for that … lol … I just had enough white acrylic paint for the 2nd trial … lol … I had bought a cheap tacky glue which I had found to be too runny for normal use it worked great so I haven’t wasted the $4.99 AU on it lol … I wiped a little off my fingers of both pastes onto a scrap of white Cardstock to see how it dried they dried well the first one bubbled a little with my heat gun might have been holding it a little too close but it was smooth once dried albeit a few bubbles lol … so when I go shopping will buy some more cornflour and try making more with other colours of paint in my stash … lol … Funny I do have that large scraper already … lol … forgot I had it … lol … so Thanks for your RU-vid … love the coloured paste idea good thinking 99
Hi Sam. I couldn’t get the 100% cornflour talc so I used half ordinary talc and half cornflour. Needed to use a lot more of it though!!! I haven’t tested it out yet, will have to see how it works! Thanks.
Yay! DIY Embossing Paste - I hardly ever buy any because it is expensive for what it is! Any excuse for buying 'Johnson's Baby Powder' (I was an NNEB Nanny in a previous life and I wish Johnson's would make an air-freshner!) Sam - your recipe has more PVA glue in it than any I've ever tried. Selecting the right talcum powder is important. Your recipe looks perfect for a thiner application. I've used corn-starch (I prefer this for thickening sweet sauces and proper Sunday Roast gravy) before - it makes a more glossy paste. I don't dry emb. paste with a heat-gun unless I want a bubbly effect - I find it dries it out too quick and leads to sheading and cracking. But I'll try yours as it has more pva glue in it - which obviously makes it more pliable/less chalky. Tfs ~ C ~
Hi Sam, Thanks for sharing your recipe for embossing paste. It looked so easy that I had to give it a try. I couldn’t find any non-sented baby powder and used 100% corn starch instead. I had to add more powder and my paste isn’t as dry as yours but it works beautifully. I really love it.
@@deborahanne9793 plus there is the problem of baby powder and the risk of causing cancer from the old talc and there are still unscrupulous companies still mining and selling it hence I won’t but any talc I did have Small Johnson and Johnson tub of it somewhere but can’t find it so I used Cornflour instead and it works fine
and a PUTTY KNIFE!!! of COURSE!!! it's PUTTY!!! i don't know why i didn't think of that lol. my dad is a professional painter. i can get used knives from him!!! tada!!!
Awesome!!! Thank you for the paste recipe! What a great tip!!! Love the ring you're wearing. Did you make that? If so, is there a tutorial? If not, where did you get it? I know it's been a few years since you made this video. Tfs GOD Bless
This is brilliant! Thank you so much for sharing it! I usually start a new project expecting to have to try it a few times, but this worked great on the first try. And in case anyone in the US is reading this and curious about brands: I used Craft Essentials brand acrylic paint; Elmer's white school glue; Equate pure cornstarch baby powder (with aloe vera & vitamin E ... I couldn't find unscented). It did take quite a bit more baby powder than the recipe to get the same consistency, but it got there. And the color of the paste was several shades lighter than the paint in the bottle. Next time, I'll get paint a few shades darker than I want!
Thanks for the US "translation"! Very helpful. I had embossing paste on my list to try, for the first time, not realizing that it was costly. Thank you Kat and Sam! 😀
I’ve just finished watching your recipe and read all the comments and learned a lot. This recipe looks real stiff and hard to spread so I was wondering if you added ink drops for color if that would loosen it up just enough to make spreading it easier. Also to make a glimmery paste if adding glitter would dry your recipe out too much, enough so you would have to add more liquid of some type? I love the glossy shine too paste too so does glycerin work with your ingredients? I’m sorry I have so many questions. Ha! I should try experimenting myself. Just wondered if since your original video you changed your recipe and how? Thanks for sharing your fun discovery.
Thank you for sharing this ❤️ Can you use this on furniture that is then painted over? And what sort of stencils do you use as I'm guessing they are quite sturdy? Thank you for your help or anyone else who wants to comment and offer some guidance. Much appreciated 👍
@@bunnylands916 Sorry for the delay in replying - had a busy few days. I don't bother to colour it when I'm using it - I just paint it with acrylics when it's dry. You could try mixing some paint with it, I suppose, but it might alter its consistency and adhesion.
