How to make post category filter for your blog page with Elementor and Wordpress

In this Elementor tutorial we will make a filter for your blog posts without using any extra plugin, we will be using only elementor in this case to avoid filling our wordpress site with useless plugin.
So this trick is very useful if you have multiple categories for your posts and you want people to switch from a category to another.

Thank you for showing the logic how to make that kind of menu! Archives system didn't work for me because I had blog before as page that has posts area, not as archive. So I made two new subpages to blog, copied blog style and content to them, created new menu with those subpages and added to blog. Important note is that when making these new "category" pages, I added Query to include term of the category I want that page to show. For wedding blog posts "wedding" and for family posts "family" as for filtering the posts automatically. Thanks to you I learned what is the logic to do it, thanks!

Thank you for an excellent video. I have one question: do we have a way to make the filter only change the archived post showing on the post but not reloading the whole page? I'm asking because before the menu, I added another block for banners and page titles, which makes whenever I click the filter menu, the whole page load. Thank you!

You need in that case to use JavaScript or a plugin that does that, unfortunately with this method pages loads, if you want to add a banner to each post category you need to use a dynamic banner with ACF in that case

Go on wordpress admin panel and look for "Permalink" and you should be able to change this, let me know if you was able to do it :)

thank you! My layout has a large header graphic above the category menus - which I added on the archive template. When user select a category filter - it works correctly, and goes to the cat page - but user now has to scroll back down mid-page to see the posts. Is there a way to have it "jump down" x amount of pixels when a category menu button is clicked? OR a way to make it update with Ajax? thanks again!

The page after selecting any category in the menu is distorted. The theme is the same however the visualization is not the same. Any idea how I can approach that?

No problem, I need to understand your settings first. So in the main page of the blog the Blog post widget should not have any specific query. So please check the query tab and you should not have any "included" element it should be blank. Let me know if this solve the issue :)

Yes ofcourse is a complete blog page working great, as you can see the categories are the menus and pagination are working perfectly.

Just create a new menu! Go on the menu page in Wordpress, Then click on “create new menu” and give it a name. Then when you add the menu widget in Elementor, it will allow you to select the menu you just created Let me know if you was able to do that 😀

Make sure you have more than 10 post, You need to set 12 post in the Elementor widget not in the Wordpress backend, make sure you did not filter out some post by adding some wrong query filter, hope this helped 🤗

Hi very nice solution! But I came accross one problem, when I changed the query to source "current query" in order to filter the categories, it orders the posts by Date, while I wanted it to order By title. Is there a way to use this solution and order the results by Title instead of by date?

Probably something changed now and you need to move to PRO but, if you move to Elementor PRO now they have a widget called post filter and you don't need to do all this anymore

Depends which widget are you using, actually the post widget should have a query setting where you can add a specific category, if you custom post has a category just query that category in the widget, anyway I use dynamico plug-in to add my custom post with filter and pagination it works very well with ACF for example.

Yes it actually loads the whole page again when you select a different category, but if you wish to make only the in-page change you need to use a plugin. For example "Dynamic content for Elementor" does the work, or also "The Plus Addons for elementor" I will do a tutorial this week about it.

Guys I have one BIG, BIG note for you - I wasted an hour on that. XD Unicorn didn't say that on original blog page you must set up your filtering to posts! Don't change filtering to Current Query on Posts and Archive template. Set up filtering to Current Query only to archive template. Besides that very helpful tutorial.

You need to enable pagination in the post widget, there is a tab when you click on that widget to enable pagination and you can even choose many settings

That’s called Ajax filter and you can have it by using Elementor pro, there is a widget that is called “filter” or similar that allows to do what you need easily
