This is the ONLY potato salad anywhere on RU-vid close to my Oma's!!! She was born in Hamburg, but her parents were from Bavaria. Her potato salad was made with red skin potatoes, heavy on the onion, heavy on the fresh cracked black pepper and heavy on the parsley. Your recipe is the only thing close to what I remember and make. Thank you for showing that not every German potato salad recipe has either bacon, oil, sugar or pickles and other stuff in it or lots mustard. Such a relief!!!

Vielen Dank, Guter Herr...Liebe aus Australien, Mate! I lived in the Ruhrgebiet for 2 years back in the late 80's. A German fish recepte to go with it would be fantastic...

My German mother (born near Leipzig) made her potato salad with onion, bacon and vinegar. Served warm. I can still taste it. Her Aunt from the Frankfurt area used a dill based dressing with onon and cucumber. A lighter summer style salad.

It really is important where you are in Germany, every region has its own recipe for potato salad. The only consistency is that the North uses mayo and the South usually don't

@@MUETZE198 absolutely!!! There is not only one kind of German Potato salad. I was relieved to actually see him do the Northern German recipe which is almost identical to my Oma's. Maybe the only Northern thing she prepared as her parents were Bavarian.

Yum! Whenever I visit my family in Germany we have “housewife potatoes” which is basically different variations of potato salad with white fish and white asparagus and hollandaise sauce. My mouth is watering!

This one looks more like my grandmother's. I don't remember her ever making fish, though. Normally she had some baked chicken on the side or other salads,like cucumber salad,egg salad or lettuce salad and some mashed potatoes. Thanks for the recipe! I'll be sure to try this when I have time.

HI I always grate dill pickles and pink lady apples into mine as well. Using only plain light Greek yoghurt makes it much lighter and more easily digestible. Less kilojoules too.

don't use vinegar, use the gurkenjuice (which is mostly vinegar) :D and I would never eat potatosalad with fish EVER X_X in northern germany we put sausage in there potatos, mayonnaise, sausage (baloney), pickles, picklejuice, salt, pepper (edit: forgot the onion!), done.

Tasted amazing! I had some trouble with the mayo, but after adding in 2 more egg yolks it finally thickened. It came out great! Thanks.

I enjoyed watching you speaking passionately about potatoes! Here in Canada, people are eating less potatoes every year : maybe because of low carbs diets? Or maybe potatoes are seen as the starchy food our grand-parents were eating? I don’t know... I like you recipe because the mayo is homemade and you did not make it sweet. Voilà! Merci

If you use the brine from the pickles in place of the vinegar, it adds to the dill flavor.

Perhaps old news to you Klas, but in the East Coast of the U.S. if you were to ask for German Potato salad, you would automatically get the South German style. The norther German style is considered standard/everyday potato salad for us. Good videos and recipes always!

That's because the US occupated the south of Germany after WWII, whereas the north was occupied by the British. Few US soldiers came to north. That's also the reason why many US Americans still think that Germans wear Dirndl and Lederhosen (it's a Bavaria thing).
@mrdefinitely8769
@mrdefinitely8769 2 года назад
@@seb0rn739 a lot of truth to that...but there are also A LOT of German-Americans who know better. Appreciate your reply.

I love German food. Rich, mayonnaise-based potato salads are among my favorites. However, I won't eat raw eggs. The only homemade mayo I'll eat is made from Julia Child's cooked egg mayonnaise recipe.
