I did EXACTLY what you said even down to the brand of cheese...it was soooo bomb. My whole family enjoyed it so much and it didn't have the after taste that some of the other brands have. Making it tonight again to go with our tacos and burritos. Thanks so much!
I have so much to learn. I have never heard of white American cheese because I am not a cook, I am single and 65 years old. I doubt I will ever have another wife at my age. So I am trying to learn how to cook for myself. I always loved that dip from Mexican restaurants.
Jen Sikora, now that I think of it, it may not be quite a 1/2 tsp. Cumin is so powerful, start with less or you’ll hate me for ruining your dip. Great video, keep up the awesome work!!
Update. IT WAS AMAZING!! :D We can't get those green chilis here, but I diced up pickled Jalapenos the same way, I used just sorta generic white American wrapped cheese slices and I also added in some Monterey jack and it was awesome :D I was honestly really skeptical about the sliced cheese working, but then the when I smelled it halfway through and it smelled exactly like the restaurant cheese I got really excited :) I can't tell you how much I've missed this cheese, Thank you so much Jen, you're awesome :)
First try with your recipe and it's fantastic. I used fresh & pickled jalapenos diced very fine for more heat and added a dash of cumin. *chef's kiss* It went perfectly with my leftover fajitas from the other night. I'll be experimenting more using your recipe as a base model. I eventually want to do a chori-queso dip in the near future. Thank you for this video
I accidentally tripped over this secret (literally) about 12 years ago, I was leaving a local Mexican restaurant and the food delivery truck was parked in the back next to my vehicle. They had the ramp down and were unloading and I tripped over the corner of the ramp. The truck driver came over and apologized (I was fine, size 13 feet get in the way sometimes) and on the dolly was two cases of Land O Lakes white American. The next time I was in the restaurant I asked the waiter if that’s the cheese they used for the dip and he confirmed that it was…I went to the grocery store and the lady at the deli sold me a 2lb block…I experimented with milk, spices, chiles etc. and finally landed on using heavy cream with a dash of cayenne and the canned/diced green chiles. The only thing I do differently is that I make it in the microwave…literally done in 4 minutes.
I dont really like American cheese but it probably melts really well though. But hey I definitely won't knock it till I try it though. Looks really good. Thanks for the video
Land O’ Lakes white American cheese had been discontinued so I bought Boar’s Head. It’s more expensive and better quality. I used mild chiles since my roommates don’t like spicy dip and used whipping cream instead of milk. I’d put it up against any Mexican restaurant’s cheese dip I’ve ever had. Common sense but eat it as soon as you pull it off the stove top before it becomes too thick. It tasted incredible!
This is so good!!! I've made this several times now, and each time it is delicious. It's great whether I happen to have the chilis or not. The Mexican restaurant I love told me they use white American cheese, and I had tried to make the dip at home before. It never worked until I tried the method you recommend. I use medium heat on the stove, and I am still experimenting with the cheese to milk ratio. Thank you again for all the happy meals I've enjoyed with this dip!
Try evaporated milk. Reg milk has high moisture versus evaporated does not. This method prevents any separation once done incorporating together. Walking to the refrigerator to get leftovers to heat up with the regular milk method...well, you will see what I mean. N PS enjoyed this simple down to the point recipe 👍
I tried to make this and it doesn’t taste like my Mexican restaurant. 😢. Plus sauce is too chunky and I added milk and it still taste funny. I don’t know what kind of milk did you use? It’s a bummer. I tried yours so you know.
Uh so stupid question cause I know the queso at the restaurants has the green things in it but does it affect the flavor if o don’t put them in I have a problem with textures of food and I don’t think I’d like them
@@jenaroundtheworld I know that’s not what you used. It’s just all I had . Lol but when I go back to the grocery store I’ll have to get the right stuff. Which brand did you use again? Thanks
Many restaurants use land o lakes white american extra melt cheese sauce. For their "authentic" dip. Heh. But doing it that way I like heavy cream better than milk. Adds more richness .
@@jenaroundtheworld honestly ma'am , yours is likely superior to the pre-fab sauce land o lakes outs out. You do your always exactly like I do mine. With the only exception that I often use heavy cream instead of milk. Or half cream and half milk etc with jalapeno relish instead of the chilies. Just depends on who I'm making it for. Have you ever done a mexican lasagna video? Those are wonderful. You can either use round tortillas and leave em whole, or cut them into shapes similar to a lasagna noodle and then just layer it as you would a lasagna with seasoned beef , and sometimes a layer of refried beans. Adding sour cream and other toppings if preferred afterwards. I'm a huge fan of your channel. Great work .
Well thank you so much for those kind words. I’ve made Mexican lasagna but never posted it before or made a video so I’ll be sure to put that on the list for January!!
Gordos white restaurant style is AMAZING. It’s not exactly 100% to the kind you get from Mexican restaurants but I swear it’s 95%. And only like $3.50 for a tub.
@@kyleperry1701 that’s not the kind which is why it is not working. You have to use the American cheese from the deli. Not the Mexican cheese from the dairy aisle.
U could technically use the microwave, but I wouldn’t recommend. It would evaporate the moisture as well as make it harder to stir. Stove top is always better when cooking anything even ramen noodles.
@@jenaroundtheworld I buy Land O'Lakes in slices at the grocery store and I only get about eight slices when they're all put together it's a lot smaller than that
@@jenaroundtheworld I guess they a do it different. A friend of ours who is Mexican gave us his grandpa recipe it so tasty it's not with America. Well like my grandpa always say more than 1 way to skin a cat. Lol
