Morag Gamble shows how to make Rosella tea straight from the garden. Rosella tea is popular around the world. This wonderfully flavoured and brightly coloured tea is made from the calyx of Hibiscus sabdariffa flowers. The rosella calyx is the succulent-like base of the flower.
Morag grows Rosella every year in her permaculture food forest. It is an annual in the subtropics, but a perennial in warmer areas. It is a very hardy plant that has few pest problems.
To find out more about growing and harvesting, see Morag's previous film • Growing Rosella: Edibl... and read about how to grow, harvest and use Rosella on Morag's blog: our-permaculture-life.blogspot...
The richly red tea has a cranberry-like flavour which Morag blends with other things such as peppermint leaves, ginger and lemon myrtle (other lemon flavours are great too - lemon or lime juice, lemongrass leaves, lemon balm or lemon verbena).
Both hot and cold, Rosella tea is delicious and refreshing and has many health benefits.
Rosella is rich in vitamin C and anti-oxidants. It helps to protect against coughs and colds, and builds your immune system.
Rosella has diuretic properties - helps to get rid of unneeded water and salt through urine, which also helps to lower blood pressure.
If taken regularly Rosella tea can prevent bladder infections.
Rosella tea helps to reduce cramps and menstrual pain, and also balances hormones related to mood swings and depression.
Rosella tea contains vitamins and minerals that have antidepressant properties. Drinking rosella tea can help to calm the nerves and relax you.
Rosella tea is drunken by many people to improve digestion.
Rosella tea quenches thirst and cools the body quickly.
Rosella tea can help with weight loss since it restricts the absorption of starch and glucose.
Please note: Rosella tea is not recommended for pregnant women as is stimulates menstruation. Also, since it helps to lower blood pressure, it is not recommended for those with low blood pressure already.

Thanks for this video - my rosellas are starting to bud up and there are masses on my one bush, so I am very keen to make some of this delicious tea. And yes, I will add some ginger and lemon myrtle as well. You have done a great job with this video, simple and I like how quietly spoken you are, thank you. God bless you today

Hello from India...thank you for this wonderful video. I am from southern part of India and roselle is our local favourite. We use the leaves to make spicy chutneys, pickles and also add in our lentils, veggies and also meat curries. But I didn't know that the flowers and seed pods could be used as well. Roselle is known as Gongura in our language (Telugu). I will surely try the tea recipe. Thanks once again :)

Hi Morag. Patrick Ifill from Trinidad and Tobago. I enjoyed the video. We know that plant as “sorrel”. It is very popular around Christmas time as a cold?sweetened drink after being boiled with spices.

Love all of your videos. Chocked full of good info. I am not a tea drinker but would like to sell dried rosella at my farmers market stand. I will dehydrate the leaves. My question is what size package should I put them in? Approx how many dried leaves per 8 oz mug of tea? And since I do not drink tea could you give me an idea of what to charge for that size of package? In dollars if you could. I am so excited to bring something new to my stand!! Thank you so very much!☺️☺️😊😊

Thank you perfect video. I am traveling and tried leaving a few overnight in a water bottle. It was a bit bitter. But I was able top top it up and add an extra flour to make it last over a day. Would that be less bitter with dried rosella or by boiling it first? I will give it a try boiling anyway as there are some available nearby.

we drink it in Egypt cold or icy , they say it lowers a one's blood pressure. I don't know if this correct,,but it somehow relaxes me since I'm living in the hot arid city of Alexandria .

hello from japan! rosella tea is the same as hibiscus tea sold in regular markets? I'm having a problem to find anything labeled as "rosella" over here. Rosella was the best tea i ever drink since my trip to thailand where i was introduced to it.

G'day I don't know if you can help me but I've been growing Rosella Hibiscus for 3 or 4 years keeping the seed from year to year I grow them to make jam. I live on the Gold coast Queensland we've had a lot of rain this year and the ones I grew were in raised garden beds but they're all died with no actual evidence what was the problem do you have any ideas or should I just start with new seeds for next year Many thanks Tim.

Hi Mam .I am Usman from Pakistan . Hope u must be doing good .. i m so in love in love with Roselle ... Not just because it is beautiful and charming .. but also i am in need of it due to some medical conditions of depression and irritating bowls .. i had it first time from Saudi Arabia many years ago . Then from malaysia around 3 or 4 years back . But not after that because we dnt have its seeds here . I am from a very small town here which is quite far away from bigger cities . I hve just seen ur video and learnt that u grown it in ur garden . I know it sounds strange to ask somebody who doesnt know u about smthing . But i dnt know what gives me courage to ask u about it . All i want to say is to make a request about roselles seeds from ur garden if u have some and dnt mind sharing it . They might be useless for u because u get lots of them in each pod . But they r so precious for people like me who have no source to get them except being bold enough to ask someone who has it. So its just a brotherly request .. if u could do so . I would be really thankful to u for this much kindness .

I got some seeds from malaysia from a lady who sent me only 10seeds. Bit they were bad ones . Didnt grow like roselles . So i am in search of good seeds actually
@MoragGambleOurPermacultureLife
I have none at the moment, but they are growing again now. If you ask again in a couple of months, I should have some available.

Is this False Roselle Hibiscus or the other?
@MoragGambleOurPermacultureLife
The False Roselle, or Hibiscus acetosella is the purple plant behind me - I call it Cranberry Hibiscus. The rosellas that I am holding are from Hibiscus sabdariffa - the actual rosella plant. See the pictures in our-permaculture-life.blogspot.com.au/2017/04/how-to-grow-harvest-and-use-rosella.html or watch my previous youtube clip ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-prA_DO6uDIc.html to see the plant and me harvesting the calyx.

Thank you for clearing that up. I saw the False Roselle behind you and thought you were making tea out of the calyx from it. I grow the False Roselle in Fl. it's really a great plant to have here. I use the leaves from it in salad and steamed as a additive to rice dishes. Do you make anything with the False Roselle calyx or leaves? Thanks,
