How to Make: Scenic Bases for Warhammer AOS & 40K - Super Fast 

This was an incredibly helpful video and exactly the kind of comparison I was looking for! I want to make some nice "ancient ruins" style bases for my new Stormcast Eternals army and the sculpey shards on top of cork look amazing. Milliput should work very well too for a similar result. Thanks a ton!

The silicone rings actually work best when you've already applied the putty of choice to the base. I just use Blu-tack to hold the bases down, roll over the top then carefully slice the edges one the putty has cured a bit. Brown stuff, Milliput or a mix of Milliput/Greenstuff etc works well for small projects. Works great for putties that are a bit older and firmer too! A small amount of vaseline or dry talc brushed over the surface before you roll can help. To get rid of lines, gently smooth your finger over the surface. You can get rid of a lot of lines without losing detail.

Great tutorial. I've tried all materials used and received pretty good results. When compared to each other the green stuff and sculpey produce the cleanest results, but all of them are fun to work with. I haven't tried the PVA DAS mix, but I am curious to try now. Thanks for the demo!

Interesting! I have tried them with a local DAS-lookalike clay without PVA and got far better results than you, i wonder what did i do differently. The ridges thing you mention IS a problem though, next time i play with them i'll see if i can figure out a way to minimize this issue.

I have so das laying around, I may test it out myself but did look like a lot of water was added so I'll let you know how it goes

I’ve really struggled with these rollers, I’ve tried all sorts of mediums and “release agents” and i just cannot stop them from sticking! Also agree with the sci fi base comment, you cannot get them sharp and square enough to look realistic.

I've had really good results with the DAS and PVA glue bases... may be the quality of the PVA... I used TiteBond outdoor use, Elmer's and a generic Wood Glue... best results were with the TiteBond...

Some wonderful results here with the sculpey. Can I just ask how thick is the cork board youre using - looks about 2mm? I'm scouring UK Amazon for something suitable to replciate this but having difficulty! Also, the only (reasonably priced) scupley I can find is the medium variety - I see youre using firm - have you any experience in this?

I've used DAS clay without PVA and it works quite well, I didn't get any cracks. That looks awfully messy the way you did it, I wouldn't fancy trying that. I found a pack of air drying clay in Aldi some time ago, it was really cheap, only £3 for 1Kg. It's nice and soft and squidgy and rolls out without much pressure, so I don't get too much problem with ridges. I realize that isn't much use to most of you, but you might be able to find a softer clay in a craft store, just give the pack a squeeze.

You were working the sculpy wrong. You knead it in your hands, if you want you can use a bit of mineral oil, (only a few drops) and you work it in your hands and condition it with the bit of oil to both warm it up and make it smooth.

You have used to much PVA Glue. The Clay should have the consistency of Cookie dough. And don't use Water the DAS Clay absorbs it and get sticky and muddy. Just use Talcum Powder or Cornstarch.
