Ive used 3 different type of presses in my working life, I am in the Aerospace industry. telling this to bolster the use of the arbor press. Ive used two different type of 50 ton presses. Hand pump type and electric hydraulic. Then the arbor. For small applications such as making rings in this fashion the arbor press is best because you can feel your work! You can somewhat with a hydraulic type, but the arbor is the best for feel and control. Ive watched a bunch of different videos from different people and their methods and what has amazed me is you are the first I have seen of someone finally using a small arbor press..Good choice, its an excellent tool. Haven't made any rings myself yet. Gathering info. Yes I do have an Arbor press. Look around for them, I got mine off of Craigs list from a machine shop where a guy was retiring. Paid 40 bucks.
@CoinRingsfromTheMint
@CoinRingsfromTheMint 7 лет назад
+sfbfriend amber presses are good for sure but if I were to buy just one press it would be the 6 ton a frame press. It actually has much more control. With an Arbor it takes more force to use and you can accidentally over press. That isn't an issue with a hand pump hydraulic press.
@sfbfriend

I actually disagree, but its more on what works for you.

your right about not needing much force to press i couldn't wait for the dies to come out so I spent some time at the machine shop Makin up my dies an there great an i had my push rods made from aluminum an its working very well its really amazing how easy this method works

The reeded side did leave marks the first time but other than that I haven't seen that its getting any worse an I've made it seems like tons since I've got them back from the machinist I've been Makin alot of the wide straight band with a 3/8 hole an small fat tire side for the ladies I thought the Morgans in the smaller sizes would just be to heavy but all the ones I've put out they won't take them off or have any complaints about weight
@CoinRingsfromTheMint

Seems like science, math, and a generous dose of artistry. I was impressed that you must be so talented and skilled to be able to explain with such clarity a complicated process. Very cool and well done. I just still don't understand why after the gold is heated and cooled, it still is so malleable. Is that because properties of gold are so different from say, Iron? Asking for a friend...
@CoinRingsfromTheMint
@CoinRingsfromTheMint 7 лет назад
+Joel Buchanan Yes non ferrous metals act different than ferrous metals like iron and steel. Annealing is totally different. If you don't anneal silver or gold, it gets harder as you work it and then will crack.

Please install a vertical support directly under your arbor press. It shouldn't take more than a tightly fitted 2×4 from the underside of the bench to the floor beneath to eliminate all that flex you can see in the bench to when you use the press.

You call what you are doing annealing, but annealing, as I understand it, requires cooling the metal slowly. You are quenching instead, which will make the ring harder, not softer (it sounded like the latter was your goal).
@CoinRingsfromTheMint

+Scott Gartner That would be right with steel or other ferrous metals. Silver and copper along with other non ferrous metals can be quenched with no hardening.

You should show the finished product after it's been polished. A 100% finished product would be nice to see.

I love your work. I wanted to let you know, you probably already know but it's worth a mention... You don't have to necessarily buy MS Morgans you can get AU or even a bit lower in grade. Because you are destroying the MS which is the luster on the coin you don't have to use a Ms coin. Keep up the Great Work and I've subscribed so I get your videos now. Also. I see comments about how it hurts to see you destroy Morgans, but they must not know how many there truly are out there.

I don't know man....this looks a little cooky....why wouldn't some sockets and reducing ring that comes with your mandrel work? Stacking things on top and not seeing if the coin is even would be a major problem. Doesn't this method also squish the raised details on the ring and flatten it all out???? Would make this very hard to patina wouldn't it? I see holes in this technique, sorry man. cool video though
@CoinRingsfromTheMint
@CoinRingsfromTheMint 7 лет назад
+A C nope it doesn't hurt the details one bit if you wrap the coin properly. If you follow the notes I made in the video you won't need to see the coin. Sockets damage the die if you over press. Also the reducing plate is way too shallow of a die to work well.
@AC-fv7kt
@AC-fv7kt 7 лет назад
You do the rounded look when you complete the coin? Just curious as the finish product looks pretty rounded to me as the reverse force would make more of a straight band look. I think sockets would be the same concept here as long as you protect the reeded side and reduce to make sure it is a good fit. The mandrel dies come in various sizes as well...so if you are reducing by mandrel just get it to the desired size. I don't know about you but not being able to eyeball the coin while reducing it would increase the chance for uneven, wobbly rings.
@CoinRingsfromTheMint
@CoinRingsfromTheMint 7 лет назад
A C They don't ever come out uneven or wobbly. Did you watch the video?
@AC-fv7kt
@AC-fv7kt 7 лет назад
Yes I watched the video and it is cool as heck. I wasn't trying to be hating just some questions. I'm going to do one with my die from my mandrel....1964 Kennedy and see. I will do a size 8 see what happens. It a genius idea. I will just use smaller sockets as it goes down. Great videos.

A C I'm sure you can make it happen it just won't be quite as easy. Good luck with it and let me know how it goes.
